Hark! The Herald ‘Imperfect Angel’ Sings
The TV Guide

Last night David and I had the EXTREME pleasure of FINALLY seeing Mariah Carey live in concert on the first LA date of her Angels Advocate Tour at the Gibson Amphitheater at Universal City … and what a spectacular show it was!!

Unlike other big production stage shows, The Angels Advocate Tour is a pared down concert performance where the focus is Mariah‘s singing. She does no dancing and prolly takes 30 steps around the stage all night long … but, the singing, yeah she kills it live on stage … well, for the most part. After the jump, check out a few photos from the show last night and check out a fan-recorded video of her performance of Touch My Body

In all honesty, she does lip sync a bit during the show … but she does sing live about 85% of the time. I’m not sure why but for a couple of the more upbeat songs, she was deffo faking it. But it was very obvs when she was singing live and lawd, can that woman belt out the music. I especially loved the golden Quinceañera dress she wore to open the show :D The show is really very fun and she performs more hits than new songs … we had the time of our lives! I’ve been a big Mimi fan for a long time so I was just ecstatic to be at the show. The Angels Advocate Tour is not the kind of show that wows you with lights, staging or even back-up dance routines … it’s all about Mariah, her catalog of massive hit songs and her voice.

I loved every second of the show :)

I was very fortunate to be able to meet Pink reader Jordan (who came down from Santa Barbara, CA) at the show last night:

It was my extreme pleasure meeting you last night, Jordan :) Mebbe I’ll run into in SB sometime.

So … no big plans for tonight … just a few errands, mebbe some reading. It’s supposed to rain again so I’m thinkin’ I’ll be wrapped in my Snuggie for the better part of the evening. Happy Hump Day!!

I went and saw Mimi when she came to Ottawa last month, we got a terrible show! Right off the bat she warned the crowd that she was sick and seemed to rush through the songs just to get it over with…there were pre-rehearsed interactions with the band that sounded totally forced and she barely ever interacted with the crowd. She can sing for sure but I feel like she should’ve done more entertaining for the money I paid to see her!

The woman may be able to sing but I just fell asleep watching that boring *ss clip. Seriously, did she forget how to even walk?

i dont remember her fakin it in Toronto…but to be totally honest..after a couple ballads..i probably didnt even notice…cause that girl KILLED it. i loved the show…and i loved the interaction she had, you got to see a real side to her, and although she may have diva tendenices (sp?) she seems like such an awesome person.

    Mariah is the Queen! :)

I am not a big fan, but I do respect her talent. She has an amazing voice, and I am glad her show keeps that the focus.

I went to the LA show last night and LOVED it!!!! I knew you’d be there, but didn’t see you. (I’m sure your seats were better than mine.) I know this is your first MC show, and boy was it a good one. She did exactly what she should do- Stand and sing. Being a true MC fan, I know she tends to lip sync so I was impressed she sang as much as she did. And she sang WELL. She for sure killed it on several songs- my favorite being “It’s a Wrap.” Glad you had fun too!!!

OMG you thought it was good?!?!?! I thought it was the worst show I have ever been to! We went to see her @ Dodge Theatre is Phoenix, AZ and she seemed drunk! She had a little table with “drinks” and kept crying for Coconut water and kept saying that was all she could drink. Then at the end she said that Arizona “forced” her to drink!!! Then she kept crying for her husband who came out only once and that was to perform MJ songs, which in my opinion caused the late Micheal Jackson to roll in his grave!!! Poor Nick, he seems more& more like her coat rack than anything! LOL Anyways, I still love Mimi but she really needs to improve if she wants to keep her fans! She still can sing but cannot put on a show, unless she was saving it all for LA like she said our show was very “impromptu.” :(

i really want to see her in concert been a fan forever, that reminds me I need to get my snuggie out of the dryer. :)

  10. Chris says:

I was disappointed. I think I saw her a decade too late. I was really hoping for some of her older songs and she sang maybe 2 or 3 from her first few albums. I think if she had at least sung Vision of Love I would have been happy. Overall she was good, I just didn’t like the selection of songs she sang.

Is it just me or everyone seems to be complaining about every single artist lately, I read complaints about Mariah, Britney, Whitney, etc… seems like is hard to please people these days… come on people cut them some slack, they are at work just like you and I and we don’t always perform at our best, but we try and sh*t happens… sometimes we do great and sometimes we just don’t. Now let’s move on.

  12. Manda says:

@Marco I think people who pay alot for their tickets have a right to be critical if the show is less than stellar. If I’m paying 100+ dollars for one ticket, then they better give the best performance they can.

  13. Janis Hicks says:

Wow – she looks WIDE. She and Oprah are on the permanent weight roller-coaster. Poor things.

  14. nicole says:

@Janis Hicks- aint nothin wrong with a little chunk. the girl knows how to work it.

  15. J says:

That is a voice – she is the voice of voices. The voice of music. Christina is right with her. But she hits the highs and the lows. She is just the real diva – no one else is even allowed to have that title. I think people get the drift…

  16. Mr. Gyllenhaal says:

I don’t know if I would waste money to see her live but she looks amazing!!

  17. lorena says:

Marco: Ever hear of the old saying “you get what you pay for”? With Whitney charging upwards of $200 (!!) per performance, then fans have the RIGHT to demand a SPECTACULAR show with the artist in TOP FORM. How many Madonna shows have been stinkers? Virtually none, she is prepared, rehearsed and READY to entertain, unlike Whitney, who is only in it for her retirement fund (it’s obvious she is not passionate about singing anymore). Never seen a Mariah show (or Mariah live) so can’t judge her.

  18. Stefanie says:

@Leslie That was not Nick Cannon that came out to sing the Michael Jackson songs…it was Trey Lorenz, who is Mariah’s long time back up singer. It might’ve been hard to see though, because they didn’t have the big jumbo screens on at all. We were up in the second tier of the Dodge Theater in Phoenix so you couldn’t really see up close…that would be my only complaint about the show…I thought it was FAB!!
