The British fashion designer found dead today on the eve of London Fashion Week
Alexander McQueen Passes Away At 40

Very sad news to pass along today … visionary British fashion designer Alexander McQueen has been found dead in his London home today on the eve of London Fashion Week where he was due to show off his new collection of clothes. Police are, thus far, treating his death as “not suspicious” but no cause of death has yet been determined … he was only 40 years old:

The fashion designer Alexander McQueen has been found dead, his company said. His office confirmed to the BBC that Mr McQueen, 40, was discovered at his London home this morning. Paramedics called to the Mayfair property pronounced him dead at the scene. Police said his death was not being treated as suspicious. A statement said his family were “devastated” at the “tragic news”, and added that they shared “a sense of shock and grief”. A former British Designer of the Year winner, London-born Mr McQueen started his career as an apprentice in Savile Row, where he learned how to make jackets at Gieves and Hawkes. In 1996, the man nicknamed “the hooligan of English fashion”, with his close-cropped hair and Doc Martens, was named head designer at the Paris couture house of Givenchy. A statement released by his office – referring to the designer by his given first name, Lee – read:

“On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family. Lee’s family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this.”

His death came days before London Fashion Week, and as final preparations were being made to a spring collection in Paris. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “We were called by London Ambulance Service at about 10.20am this morning to reports of a man found dead at an address in Green Street, W1. He is believed to be 40-years-old and from London. Next of kin have been informed, however we await formal identification before releasing the name of the deceased. A post mortem examination and inquest will take place in due course. The death is being treated as non-suspicious.”

While some reports are suggesting that McQueen took his own life, I think it is much more prudent to hold off on making those kinds of determinations until more information is made available. But no matter how McQueen died he has left this world far too soon. While I am not a student of fashion, I could always appreciate Alexander McQueen‘s creative and oftentimes outlandish design sensibility. There’s no question he was a hugely talented fashion designer … I am quite certain that the Fashion world has been left reeling today. My thoughts and prayers go out to McQueen‘s family and friends. Alexander McQueen will surely be missed.

UPDATE: McQueen‘s final tweets on his official Twitter profile shed some light on his state of mind in the days leading up to his death. After the jump, read some of his final words before his untimely death today …

John Mayer Apologizes For His ‘Playboy’ Magazine Interview

Yesterday we got our first taste of some of the heinous things John Mayer said in a new interview with Playboy magazine which, it should come as no surprise, angered and disgusted a lot of people. Among those disgusted, shamed and embarrassed by the comments was Mayer himself …

… who almost immediately took to his official Twitter profile yesterday to apologize to his fans for the SOME of the things he said in the interview. Here are Mayer‘s apologetic tweets in full:

Re: using the ‘N word’ in an interview: I am sorry that I used the word. And it’s such a shame that I did because the point I was trying / to make was in the exact opposite spirit of the word itself. It was arrogant of me to think I could intellectualize using it, / because I realize that there’s no intellectualizing a word that is so emotionally charged. / And while I’m using today for looking at myself under harsh light, I think it’s time to stop trying to be so raw in interviews… / It started as an attempt to not let the waves of criticism get to me, but it’s gotten out of hand and I’ve created somewhat of a monster. / I wanted to be a blues guitar player. And a singer. And a songwriter. Not a shock jock. I don’t have the stomach for it. / Again, because I don’t want anyone to think I’m equivocating: I should have never said the word and I will never say it again.

Not content to just make his mea culpa on Twitter, Mayer also offered a lengthy apology live on the concert stage last night in Nashville, TN. After the jump, if you even care, watch video of Mayer‘s concert apology …
