The Back-Up Plan
Julie Benz Gets ‘Uncorked’ In A New TV Movie

Julie Benz may have a new gig on ABC appearing in a guest role on Desperate Housewives but that’s not all she’s got going on professionally … Julie will be starring in a new TV movie for the Hallmark Channel called Uncorked which tells the tale of an overworked, overstressed woman who finds rest, relaxation and an appreciation for a simpler way of life in the wine country. Here are a couple promo pics from Uncorked and a bit more info about the movie:

Julie Benz likes to work. A lot. This is a good thing indeed considering that Benz has been working pretty much nonstop since landing her first acting job some 20 years ago in a forgettable horror flick called “Two Evil Eyes” opposite a fellow named Harvey Keitel. “I don’t like to be unemployed,” Benz admits. “I love being on a set more than just about anyplace else, certainly more than sitting on my couch at home. I take every opportunity that comes along, and I’ve been very lucky, because the opportunities haven’t stopped.” So you have to believe that Benz may have related a bit to the character she portrays in the new Hallmark Channel in HD Original Movie, “Uncorked,” which premieres on the channel Saturday, March 6 (9p.m. ET/PT, 8C). She’s Johnetta “Johnny” Prentice, a workaholic CFO for a major corporation whose life is turned upside-down when she’s sent to a conference in California wine country to seal a deal, but winds up falling in love along the way in a flick that costars JoBeth Williams, Elliott Gould and Scott Elrod of “Men in Trees” fame. “Johnny is a woman who relies on work to get things in her life done,” Benz stresses. “I understand that sort of mindset really well, though I think Johnny’s a lot more cut off emotionally than I am. I like to think I’ve got a lot of different sides to me that I can bring out in my performing.” And how. Consider that at the same time Benz is starring in the Hallmark Channel pic, she’s been featured in a recurring role on “Desperate Housewives” as Debbie, “a stripper with a brain,” as she describes it, a lady who shucks stereotypes along with her clothes after arriving on Wisteria Lane. For the 37-year-old Benz, acting simply doesn’t get any better – or more wide-ranging – than this. “It’s pretty great, isn’t it?” she exults. “But I mean, that’s Hollywood for ya. It’s wonderful to be able to depict a stripper and center a Hallmark Channel movie at the same time. It’s just all about finding ways to grow as a performer, to raise myself to the art, to challenge myself and make it interesting. The only thing I really know how to do is work – so here I am” … Fortunately, there was plenty of work waiting for Benz … She’s having a “wonderful” time on “Housewives” working closely with star Teri Hatcher. She has also been shooting an indie feature drama called “Answers to Nothing,” alongside Dane Cook. But it was “Uncorked” (her second Hallmark Channel Original, the first being 2004’s “The Long Shot”) that Benz found the most refreshing departure of her recent acting life. In a career dominated by action fare like “Dexter” and 2008’s “Rambo,” she welcomed centering a project that was “so simple and romantic.” She adds, “The film shoot was so much fun. Part of the time was in Solvang (California) at a winery in this little tiny town. The whole cast and crew took over this one little motel. It was like being back in college…but with a little more responsibility. And our director, David Cass Sr., was just wonderful, a guy with an amazing work ethic who got us done every day at a decent hour.”

Aww … to be honest, this is SO not my kind of movie but I love Julie Benz so much, I might have to check it out. It sounds like a fun environment to make a movie and these days, work is work. I know that there are a lot of Julie Benz fans out there so I figured y’all might like to know about this movie so you might mebbe check it out when it premieres on the Hallmark Channel on Saturday, March 6 (9PM ET/PT, 8C).

The Heat is on ... sale
Beyoncé Officially Launches ‘Beyoncé Heat’

So … I guess Beyoncé is really serious about this new celebrity fragrance that she plans to peddle to fans because after it was announced in December that the perfume called Beyoncé Heat was on the way, she released a video commercial for the stuff this past weekend and last night she appeared at an in-person event to officially launch the fragrance:

This Catch the Fever event was held in NYC, NY last night and, as you can see, B was all smiles. You may recall that the commercial we saw last weekend for Beyoncé Heat features the song Fever and the phrase Catch the Fever … and now we learn the event was called Catch the Fever … so I gotta wonder why she didn’t call the damn stuff Fever in the first place. I suppose there is already a fragrance called Fever so Beyoncé had to go with Heat or something like that. Confusing. In the end, it really boils down to what the perfume smells like. I suppose there is a certain segment of the population that might want to smell like Beyoncé‘s Heat. Are YOU a part of that segment of the population?

Big Tease
New ‘Green Lantern’ Concept Art Leaks To The Internets

Last month we learned that filming is scheduled to begin next month on the big screen adaptation of the comic book Green Lantern (starring Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively). Since that news was released, we’ve heard reports that both Peter Sarsgaard and Mark Strong are being considered for roles in the film … and today, we get to check out some concept art reportedly created for the film:

A collection of seemingly official concept art from Ryan Reynolds’ space-cop adaptation Green Lantern showcases a few of our favorite members of the Corps. So who’s in? hese concept designs were discovered by Cosmic Book News and later confirmed to be true concept art designs on the Green Lantern Crps message bards by the Green Lantern Spotlight Podcast. Nothing is official yet, but we’re hoping the concept art of Tomar-Re at least is for real, since he’s scaring the crap out of us. Not the intended purpose of the character, of course, but still freaky. Tomar-Re is the fishy bird-faced alien from the planet Xudar. Tomar-Re trains new Green Lantern Corps members and fights injustice across his sector. But of course he looks much more comically alien in the comic books … And [then], there’s Kilowog! Another new-recruit trainer and gigantic fellow from the Bolovax Vik, where he was a scientist — which is kind of a running theme among the Green Lanterns.

Included in this batch of concept art is an image of The Guardian and a fan art rendering of what Green Lantern villain Sinestro (reportedly to be played by Mark Strong) might look like. The concept art looks really genuine to me and the fan art created Sinestro looks pretty cool, too. Since filming is supposed to begin in a few weeks, it would make sense that genuine concept art might come to light. What do you think, is this the real deal? If so, does it bode well for the way the movie may turn out?

The Boy Band Bromance continues
Lance Bass & Joey Fatone Are Beach Buddy BFFs

Lance Bass and Joey Fatone go back a long way … the guys have been BFFs since their days in *NSync and, it turns out, they are still as close as ever. The boy band bros recently jetted off together to the Westin Dawn Beach Resort & Spa in St. Maarten to enjoy a little holiday together. As you can see from the following photo, the BFFs had themselves a great time:

As you can see, Lance was able to get a bit higher in the air than Joey … but then again, Lance is a bit more ripped than Joey is. After the jump, check out a few more photos of these two frolicking on the beach in St. Maarten together …

Congrats!!

The TV Guide
The ‘Belong’-ing

Last night was the latest meeting of The Turtle Party: Book Club and it was, quite probably, the most exciting and fun meeting we’ve ever had. While some folks were not able to finish reading The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon, the folks who did read it loved it entirely. I believe it was the highest rated book that we’ve read thus far. The duty fell to Amelia to bring in 3 selections for the group to vote on to read as our next book and after much debate, the decision came down to a tie between two books. After we asked our followers on Twitter to help us pick our next book, it was determined that we will be reading the short story collection No One Belongs Here More Than You by Miranda July:

I’m excited that our next book is a collection of short stories, I think it will make for a spirited discussion when we meet next. We decided to change up our meeting schedule a bit … instead of meeting every other Tuesday, we’ve decided to meet only once a month on the first Sunday of the month. Our next official meeting to discuss the book will be Sunday March 7 where we will discuss No One Belongs and then select our next book to read.

After our raucous meeting, we all stayed together to watch Lost … which was very fun, if a bit confusing and very lively for pretty much everyone … well, save for one of us. We had a great time last night, I love my fellow Turtle Partiers.

Today, we clean … we will be hosting David’s brother Aram this weekend to celebrate his birthday so we start cleaning our pit today. Wee, I can’t wait. /sarcasm

Ziering engaged, Gibson an "a-hole", 'Lost' pulls in big ratings
Here comes the 'Nothing But Love' World Tour
Whitney Houston Arrives In South Korea To Kick Off Her World Tour

Pink reader Marcus gave me the head’s up that Whitney Houston has finally arrived in Seoul, South Korea for the start of her much-anticipated Nothing But Love World Tour, scheduled to kick off on February 6 … and she was met by a warm welcome by the people of Korea:

“I will meet Korean fans first on this tour. This is my first performance in Korea, but I’m excited as if I’m going on my first world tour.” Pop diva Whitney Houston wrote this in an e-mail interview yesterday, adding, “I will truly present Whitney’s music rather than just show many things.” She arrives in Korea today and will perform at the Olympic Park Gymnasium in Seoul Saturday and Sunday evenings. Houston has battled drug addiction, an unhappy marriage with singer Bobby Brown, and eventually divorce. In September last year, however, she released her new album “I Look To You” and will begin her first tour in a decade in Seoul. Her world tour is named “Nothin’ But Love” after a song in her new album. “I chose this title because what I had under any circumstance was love,” she said. “I wouldn’t have overcome tough times without my mom and my daughter. My daughter is especially like a friend who supported me and stayed with me at the studio when I was working on the album.” Houston debuted in 1985 with her self-titled album, and since won six Grammys and sold as many as 170 million albums.

And away she goes … Whitney Houston is now in South Korea to kick off this next leg of her stunning comeback. I’m anxious to hear how her first show goes and I am really excited to see her perform live here in the US. It’s just so wonderful to see her doing so well. I’m crossing all of my fingers and all of my toes for this world tour to be a huge success for her.

And in other Whitney news, I have randomly selected the 3 lucky winners of the Whitney Houston: 25th Anniversary Edition CD/DVD giveaway and I will be announcing those winners shortly. If you submitted an entry, stay tuned to find out if you’re one of the lucky winners :)

"To reduce life to ... 140 [characters] just seems to be a little bit too simplistic"
Patrick Stewart Gracefully Explains Why He Does Not Use Twitter

Patrick Stewart — the amazing British star of stage, film and television — explains to digital_nation on PBS (a new series that is devoted to “life on the virtual frontier”) why he has no reason to tweet or have Twitter in his life in the most Shakespeareanly elegant way possible, as only Patrick Stewart can. Here are a few screencaps from this short little interview blurb:

But while he can see no reason to have Twitter in his life, he goes on to explain how attached he is to his beloved iPhone and the connectedness to the Internet that it provides. If you are a fan of Patrick Stewart, as I am, you gotta watch this interview — after the jump …

Peace the Spork Out
Fall Out Boy Are Dunzo!

Welp … it sounds like they’ve actually gone and done it … the most prominent members of Fall Out Boy, namely Pete Wentz and Patrick Stump, are confirming that FOB are no longer together as a band. Words like “hiatus” and “break” are being thrown into the mix but it really sounds like the band is dunzo for good, at least for now:

It looks like the members of Fall Out Boy may be on the outs – for good. After months of speculation, Pete Wentz and Patrick Stump have confirmed that their band, Fall Out Boy, is not together at this time. “As far as I know,” bassist Wentz wrote on his blog Tuesday, “Fall Out Boy is on break … I can’t predict that I’d ever play in Fall Out Boy again.” Meanwhile, frontman Stump issued a more definitive statement. “I’m not in Fall Out Boy right now,” he told Spin.com. Wentz added via Twitter that to continue in the band, “Something would have to change in my head or my heart – not my wallet. It’d have to be real.” And this is a real ending, at least according to Wentz, who Tweeted, “A hiatus is forever until you get lonely or old, [and] I don’t plan on either” … “One way or another, the band will always be around,” said Stump. Echoed Wentz on his blog, “There is the possibility that FOB will play again with or without me.” What’s next for the former bandmates? Stump is already at work on a solo album, but Wentz – who has a 1-year-old son with wife Ashlee Simpson-Wentz – is eager to move forward with new project, and maybe a tour. “Letting go of this giant part of my life has been hard,” he blogged. “But I want to be back on tour having my son watch me from the side of the stage.”

Yeah … I think we all saw this coming for some time now. It makes sense that the guys would start to grow apart and it’s natural that they would want to spin off and do their own projects (as in Patrick‘s case) or settle down and enjoy life (as in Pete‘s case). I suspect all of the members of Fall Out Boy will be just fine in the short term and, who knows, they might get the itch to make new music again sometime in the future as a singular unit again. I predict Fall Out Boy will reunite again in the future … but for now, it seems like the right time to give them a hearty Peace the Spork Out.
