The 2010 Golden Globes Are Handed Out
'Dexter', 'Avatar', 'Crazy Heart', 'Up' win doubles

Last night the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards were handed out in rainy SoCal at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA … and, I gotta say, the show did a pretty fantastic job with spreading the wealth to many deserved winners. No one movie or TV show ran away with all the awards … Dexter was the only TV series to win 2 awards while Avatar, Crazy Heart and Up were the only movies to win 2 awards as well (with the former film taking home the biggest movie awards of the night). Here are a few pics from the rainy red carpet arrivals last night:

I am *amazed* that the organizers of the Golden Globe Awards this year did not plan for the rain. We knew all week long that it was going to rain yesterday … hell, it even started raining early enough in the day to give folks the head’s up that they might want to plan for a wet red carpet and yet … there was no planning involved. Everyone on the red carpet, celebs and reporters alike, were just meandering around like wet lost sheep. How dreadful. Many of the celebs had to scramble to find umbrellas and people to hold their umbrella’s for them … only Mariah Carey came prepared with her very own personal valet/husband Nick Cannon who is always at the ready to hold her umbrella for her whenever she needs him. Such a good boy.

But, the show did go off without a hitch. Ricky Gervais, IMHO, wasn’t that great of a host but he did a passable job I thought. And as I mentioned earlier, I was very pleased with many of winners last night — save for just a few winners I did NOT agree with at all. After the jump, check out some photos from the show itself and find out who won and who I thought got robbed …

James Cameron carried home two Golden Globes on Sunday night for his 3-D blockbuster, “Avatar.” “Avatar,” which has sold $1.6 billion in tickets worldwide in just a month, was chosen best movie drama, while Cameron won for best movie director. “We have the best job in the world,” Cameron said. Many of the winners and presenters at the 67th Golden Globes wore red and yellow ribbons, a reminder of Tuesday’s devastating earthquake in Haiti. “It does feel strange to dress up and play fantasy, but I’m glad we are talking about it,” actress Kyra Sedgwick told CNN on the red carpet. Globe producers included several appeals in the awards broadcast for viewers to donate to Haitian relief efforts. As “Crazy Heart” star Jeff Bridges accepted the best actor in a movie drama award — the first Golden Globe of his career — he joked about his lack of awards. “Wow, you’re really screwing up my under-appreciated status here,” Bridges said. The best actress in a movie drama went to Sandra Bullock for her work in “The Blind Side.” Robert Downey Jr. won the Globe for best actor in a movie comedy or musical for his role in “Sherlock Holmes.” Downey joked that he didn’t have an acceptance speech because his wife told him Matt Damon would win the category for “The Informant!” “The Hangover,” a comedy about misadventures in Las Vegas, won the Golden Globe for best comedy or musical movie. Former boxing champ Mike Tyson, who played himself in the film, stood onstage as a movie director Todd Phillips accepted the award. Austrian actor Christoph Waltz won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a movie for “Inglourious Basterds.” The role of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa — the villain in Quentin Tarantino’s film — required Waltz to speak four languages fluently. The Golden Globe for best TV drama was awarded to AMC’s “Mad Men” for the third straight year. Alec Baldwin repeated his Emmy success at the Globes, winning the best actor in a TV comedy or musical series award. Meryl Streep took home her seventh Golden Globe, one for best actress in a comedy or musical movie, for “Julie & Julia.” Streep, referring to last week’s earthquake in Haiti, said it was hard for her to put on her “happy movie self, in face of everything I am aware of in the real world.” Streep had two chances to win the category, because she was also nominated for “It’s Complicated.” Kevin Bacon won the Golden Globe for best actor in a made-for-TV miniseries or movie for his acting in HBO’s “Taking Chance.” It was his first Globe … The Globe for best actress in a made-for-TV miniseries or movie went to Drew Barrymore for HBO’s “Gray Gardens.” It was her first Globe win after three nominations. Chloe Sevigny, who plays the second wife in HBO’s “Big Love,” took the best supporting actress Globe for a made-for-TV miniseries or movie. “Up in the Air,” which was up for Globes in six categories, won the best screenplay award. Showtime’s “Dexter” grabbed Golden Globes for best actor — Michael C. Hall — and best supporting actor — John Lithgow — in a TV series, miniseries or movie. The best actress in a TV drama series went to Julianna Margulies for her work in “The Good Wife” on CBS. Comedian Mo’Nique won the Golden Globe for best supporting actress in a movie for her role as an abusive mother in “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.” “I’m shaking when I tell y’all I’m in the midst of my dream,” Mo’Nique said. Toni Collette won the best actress in a TV comedy or musical TV series for Showtime’s “United States of Tara.” It was Collette’s first Globe win, though she has been nominated four times. The Disney-Pixar blockbuster “Up” won the Golden Globe for best animated movie. Pixar has won the category every year since it was started four years ago. “Up” was also honored for best original movie score, which was composed by Michael Giacchino. The award for best original song for a movie went to T Bone Burnett’s “The Weary Kind,” the theme for “Crazy Heart.”

As I gushed earlier, I was thrilled at the Dexter wins but I was also pleased that Robert Downey, Jr. won for his work in Sherlock Holmes, that Drew Barrymore won for her work in Grey Gardens and that Meryl Streep won for her work in Julie & Julia. 3 great performances, 3 well deserved wins. Now, at the risk of sounding like a hater, I get that everyone loves Avatar so much but I vehemently disagree that it was the Best Film of the year. No way. The Hurt Locker alone is far superior in every way that matters, IMHO. Avatar is a great 3D movie but it’s all visuals and no substance. The story is fine but it’s far from superb. I cannot believe the hype has carried the film to the heights of box office success and now to awards show glory. The Golden Globes are a great precursor to the Oscars so I think we know who the contenders are. Mo’Nique will very likely win an Academy Award and Jeff Bridges also has a very good shot. I hope and pray that a more deserving film will win Best Film but, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Click HERE to see a full list of winners at the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards last night. Did YOUR faves win? What did YOU think of the show itself?

I’m gonna assume most people posting are young and don’t understand the concept of the Globes so basically, in a nutshell, here it is..

Globes prefer Style over Substance (Avatar)
Globes prefer to be hip than proper (Dexter actors)
Globes are all about the new “exciting” stuff (Glee)

Avatar was truly an amazing technological wonder of a film and yes will be remembered in 5 years time… doesn’t mean it should win Best Pic in any award show. These are awards are about the best for that specific year, that year that is unlike other years cuz it happened THIS year. And The Hurt Locker was the most amazing movie of this year. Hands down. Will it be remembered in 5 years? I don’t know. Will we still be at war so it’ll be timely? Awards aren’t for what will be remembered for years to come. Cuz really, does anyone remember Chariots of Fire (other than the theme song?)

Dexter… MCH, always solid, loved him since SFU. Lithgow… a genius in everything he does. But Hugh Laurie and Michael Emerson were the bombs! Exclamation point! But, Dexter is the hip show to watch… ergo, Globes hand it to em. Did they deserve it? Absolutely. Were Hugh and Michael better. HELL yeah!

Aaaaaaand Glee. I like Glee. It’s done well for the most part. Although the shifts in tone from episode to episode is quite jarring. But the best show in that group was Modern Family… but it’s not “exciting” enough for them than having late 20 year olds belting out songs in a performance fashion (which technically doesn’t make it a musical). Jane Lynch is amazing. Matthew Morrison owns the show. Mark Salling is a babe. Modern Family, the better show.

And finally… Ricky Gervais is brilliant… BRILLIANT! His only mistake, if you can call it that, was catering to the industry in the room with his humor instead of generic civilians in the midwest who don’t understand industry humor or British humor. Ricky Gervais should host every award show… cuz he’s the most hysterical person out there right now.

And if someone out there thinks Russell Brand is better, don’t even bother replying. It won’t be worth reading.

This is my first post ever on a blog site. It was quite fun. Now I have to go back to working on my TV show… which for me is more fun.

Trent, you have one of my favorite sites. Keep up the good work. NIN RULES!

If any movie was robbed, it was definitely Inglourious Basterds. I’m glad that Christoph Waltz got Best Supporting Actor (which he should have), but c’mon! Quentin Tarantino is overdue for a Best Director award! He should have AT LEAST got Best Screenplay!

I think Avatar deserved its win to be honest, it does everything a good film is supposed to do which is entertain…although I would have been happy with precious winning, I think all the films nominated were all films that catered to a very different audience and were not everyone’s ‘cup of tea’ I think box office scores speak volumes and that not ~everyone~ wants to go see a film about the war…people want to be taken to a different place and I think Avatar did that and so won. just my opinion though…not any more important than anyone else’s I guess…

I thought that Sandra Bullock thanking her husband (Jesse James) during her speech was so sweet and touching. So glad she won, and I’m so glad she has found such a wonderful balance in personal and professional life.

I mean, 11 years to make a movie is A LOT of work. I think he deserves it. I thought ‘The Hurt Locker’ was powerful and intense but to me, I don’t like war movies and it kind of falls into any other category that is a war movie. That’s just my opinion. War movies are extremely similar to the other and it did stand out amongst the others, yes, but still. It wasn’t very original. ‘Avatar’ may not be original in story sense but what really is? Nothing. The special effects are quite good and it just goes to show you what the people like, I guess.

  6. Reem says:

It was really sad seeing Michael C. Hall cover his head :( That alone made me tear up and I think he really deserved his win, I wish Dexter would’ve won over Mad Men though

  7. a.j. says:

hey hun it was at the beverly hilton, not the beverly hills hotel

  8. hkgirl says:

DEXTER GOT ROBBED! As great a show as Mad Men is, I think Dexter should have definitely taken it this year. As for the other globes that were handed out I think they were done so correctly although, I am still not fully convinced like many, that Avatar should have taken home the globe for Best Movie- Drama…because you’re right Trent, there was a lack of ‘real’ substance behind the movie plot, although James Cameron did touch on his effort to produce a movie that would showcase the idea that BEINGS are all connected including beings and their surrounding world.

I think Ricky Gervais was a hit, but because his humor was so blatantly ‘English’ I think many did not understand- but it was a risk that the AFP took and IMHO I think it paid off…

Thanks for the update on the GG’s Trent! Always appreciated

  9. meh says:

ugh cannot believe Avatar won. I refuse to see that film.

  10. Dex says:

I agree Dexter got robbed, Mad Men was awful last season. I think Avatar deserved that award because it’s entertaining, the hurt locker was so boring I couldn’t even finish it

  11. KKesquire says:

Trent, did you see that photo of Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer was listed as L
“Musician Amanda Palmer and guest”? Hilarious since Neil was the reason they were there (bc “Coraline” was nominated)m

I thought Ricky Gervais was WONDERFUL! I laughed out loud a lot, but I think he was miserably under-used. He was on for like 5 minutes, what was that?

Avatar winning along with James Cameron’s obnoxious speech infuriated me. I really hope Hurt Locker murders it at the Oscars, but of course, it won’t.

  12. Jo says:

My favourite thing about it all is this: http://www.life.com/image/95843691

    “Amanda Palmer and guest” XD`

  13. J says:

Everyone believes Hurt Locker deserves because it carries that message and has real emotional depth etc… Avatar too has a message that is more hard to come across – you need to connect youself to the film and understand and be like “Ohhhh” sometimes it may take the second viewing to do so cause you’re just wow’d by the spectacular CGI and the fantastic visuals.

But at the end of the day, Avatar deserves as much as the Hurt Locker. Cameron has created a masterpiece that is pulling people in day by day and easy cruising at the box office. I know that doesn’t guarantee an Oscar – but his work is as much deserving as his ex-wifes. I want to see Avatar cause IMO i really loved it an definitely Top 5 all time for me. But James has done something Oscar worthy, whether it is all visuals or not — i don’t believe it doesn’t deserve a Best Film award. It comes down to personal opinion and the voters will decide come February or is it March now??

  14. Kelly says:

I am tired of looking at Mariah breasts, they aren’t news anymore-oy!

  15. @Dex says:

Really? You thought Mad Men was boring last season? Did you watch the entire thing? The season was brilliant! I love both Dexter and Mad Men and would have been happy either way … Go Mad Men. And Michael and John.

  16. Illise says:

Im glad avatar won best movie, is one of the best movies i have seen in years, i see an oscar in the future lol

  17. Nicole says:

Who is the chick in the picture next to Penelope’s? Is it just my eyes or does she have some major pit hair kickin’?

  18. Lee says:

Who is the actress in the bottom right photo with her arm in the air, showing off her hairy armpit? I think she’s cool for that. What is her name?

  19. yousarocker says:

@ Nicole – yeeeah . . . that’s kinda the first thing I noticed and I rushed to check the comments to see if anyone else mentioned it. Who is that woman? Perhaps she is a European, or just comfortable with the natural state of her body . . . but I dunno. I think it’s a little odd not to bother to shave for an awards show. Just sayin’.

  20. yousarocker says:

Oh, thank you, Trent. I’m glad she’s comfortable with her body, but (shamefully, i add) the pit hair bothers me.
