Shania Twain Bears The Torch For The 2010 Winter Olympic Games
"I will never forget this honor and cherish the privilege"

Country-pop singer Shania Twain became a part of Olympic History last night as she was honored with the task of being torch-bearer for the Olympic Flame as it made its way thru her hometown of Timmins, Ontario on its way to Vancouver, British Columbia where the 2010 Olympic Winter Games will commence next month. Here are a couple photos of Shania‘s Olympic moment and some deets about her run:

Despite Friday night’s bitterly cold, windy weather, Shania Twain carried the Olympic torch through her Canadian hometown of Timmins, Ontario, and into a celebration at a city park. Enduring the minus-30-degree wind-chill factor, more than 1,000 fans cheered and screamed as the five-time Grammy winner, 44, ran onto a makeshift stage wearing a white torchbearer’s uniform. After stopping for a quick photo op, Twain jumped up and down, smiled, waved and lit a ceremonial cauldron to kick off a show. “There is a lot of excitement surrounding the voyage of the Olympic flame as it makes its way through our beautiful country,” the Canadian-born Twain said before the chilly spectacle. “I am proud to be a small part of the flame’s journey to its final destination at the games in Vancouver” – where the Olympics will commence Feb. 12. “I will never forget this honor and cherish the privilege,” she said.

Another round of Olympic Games is nearly upon us. Just 2 years ago, we watched as Beijing, China played host to the 2008 Olympic Summer Games (and we watched as US Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps broke all sorts of Olympic Records) and now it’s time again to prepare the way for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Geeze, where does the time go? In any event, it’s really cool that Shania got to be a part of this ancient Olympic tradition. It is an honor that is not shared by many. As the flame makes its way to Vancouver, BC it’ll go thru some rough and COLD Canadian terrain … here’s hoping it’ll burn brightly along the way.

It’s nice to see that she hasn’t forgotten where she came from.

I believe I am as close as I will ever be to the Olympic torch, as it is passing through and hour north of me today! Very proud to be Canadian!!

  3. Steph says:

When it was in Montreal, it passed within a half hours drive from my place, and I missed it! Either way, I’m very excited for the games and glad to see Shania!

This is indeed a great spectacle, but it isn’t really an ancient one- the torch relay started with the 1936 Olympics in Berlin and was used as a form of Nazi propaganda! In the ancient Olympics, the flame stayed put. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O.....t_Olympics

haha vancouver should have the summer games… we have no snow here lol, be ready for some rain, world!! i am kinda dreading how busy the city will be but excited for all the spirit! my university is closed because vanoc is using it for parking lol. no school!

@ Caitlin- totally agree….with all the rain we have been getting here lately, maybe some type of “water” Olympics instead? Arc building? hehe:) I am NOT looking forward to the chaos that is to come here in a few weeks…with all the parking restrictions, I have no idea how I will get to work:(

  7. Jason Reitman also ran with the Torch a few weeks ago. In T.O I believe. He tweeted about it and also posted a few pics. I think every Canadian Celebrity is gonna try and do it. I will settle for holding one from the person i know who ran on Vancouver Isand.

@BCDanielle…. I would recommend transit if possible! It’s gonna be crazy. Awesome, but crazy

I’m a native Vancouverite away from the games (go figure, I’ll see them in London…) but it’s so much fun to see the odd bit of Olympic news! I am not at all excited for the mass chaos and traffic that will come, and no doubt everyone is worried about the lack of snow, but the party should be fantastic. O Canada!
