Apple Announces The iPad
Basically, it's a bigger iPhone

Engadget is providing a live blog feed from the Apple event taking place today where president Steve Jobs is announcing the release of the much-anticipated, much-ballyhooed and much-speculated about device we now know is called the iPad. Here are a few photos that give us our first look at this new device, which Apple hopes will revolutionize mobile computing:

After the jump, check out official photos of the iPad and read the deets about this “magical” new Apple device

Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs has unveiled the iPad, a tablet-style computer that resembles the iPhone, but larger. “It’s so much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smart phone,” Jobs said Wednesday at the device’s highly anticipated debut in San Francisco. Apple had kept its “latest creation” tightly under wraps, though many analysts had correctly speculated that it would be a one-piece tablet computer with a big touch screen, larger than an iPhone but smaller than a laptop. The iPad has a 9.7-inch touch screen. It is a half-inch thick, weighs 1.5 pounds and comes with 16, 32 or 64 gigabytes of flash memory storage. The device comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technology, but no mention was immediately made of a data connection through a wireless carrier. Jobs said the battery lasts for 10 hours, and that the device can sit for a month on standby without needing a charge. The CEO demonstrated how the iPad is used for surfing the Web with Apple’s Safari browser. He typed an e-mail using an on-screen keyboard and flipped through photo albums by flicking his finger across the screen. Jobs said the iPad will also be better for reading books, playing games and watching video than either a laptop or a smart phone. The iPad comes with software including a calendar, maps, a video player and iPod software for playing music. All seem to have been slightly redesigned to take advantage of the iPad’s bigger screen.

Pricing will start at $499 for the 16-gigabyte version, $599 for the 32-gig version and $699 for the 64-gig version. The Wifi only iPads will begin shipping in 60 days, the 3G version in 90 days. Apple has, once again, teamed up with AT&T for mobile connectivity with pricing starting at $14.99 for 250mb a month of usage, $29.99 a month unlimited usage WITHOUT a contract. The AT&T packages will be prepaid only … and the iPad will come unlocked, meaning you could put in any GSM SIM card for connectivity. All in all, it sounds like a cool toy … I don’t like that it doesn’t seem to run multiple apps and is basically just a larger iTouch/iPhone. I might have to take a pass on getting this toy when it comes out. Click HERE to be notified by Apple when the iPad becomes available. What do y’all think … is this new device must own?

@D I agree. Good to see I’m not the only one completely underwhelmed by the giant iPhone.

I want one! But I’m going to wait for the next generation one to come out. I don’t have the money… but it’s definitely neat!

So trent… are you team iPhone or Droid? Or blackberry??

(I want to finally upgrade from my pay-per-minute phone with no browsing capability…)

    • @meggles — I can never decide which phone is better … BlackBerry or iPhone. They both are great for different reasons. If you text or access email a lot (and like to take great mobile phone photos), then the BB is for you. If you don’t need to type very much on a phone (and don’t care about mobile phone photos), then the iPhone is a fantastic choice.

I’m so glad that Apple made a tablet computer. But as an IBM tablet owner, I just wish it had a keyboard. I like the fact that my current tablet has a flexible screen which can be your traditional laptop and flip to be a tablet notebook. If Apple made something like that, I would buy it in a minute. Maybe I’ll just have to wait.

  7. Lots of Good information in your posting, I favorited your blog post so I can visit again in the near future, Thanks
