Anderson Cooper Saves Lives In Haiti
To the rescue

Anderson Cooper, who is currently in Haiti reporting for CNN, got himself caught in a situation where he felt compelled to save the life of a young boy whose life was endangered by a looting situation nearby. Here are a few graphic photos of Anderson bravely saving this young boy’s life and some deets from Cooper himself on what went down:

We were covering another story when we heard shots being fired. We ran toward the sound and found a store being looted. Two Haitian police officers were occasionally firing into the air to try to keep order, but that only worked for a few moments, then the looting would begin again. They were stealing boxes of candles. An American businessman named Tony who owns two stores nearby barricaded one street to keep looters away. He had armed the two Haitian police with automatic weapons, and they were assisting him, but they were not able to control anything beyond their barricade. It quickly became a free-for-all. Young men began fighting one another for the stolen items. A number of young men had knives, and planks of wood, screwdrivers and rocks. They were using their improvised weapons to threaten and injure others who had stolen items from the store. The robbers were now being robbed. One group of looters whipped another man with a leather belt. They punched him as well, and they stole the sack of goods he’d just stolen. I was in the midst of the melee with Charlie Moore, my producer, Neil Hallsworth my cameraman, Vlad Duthiers, my translator, and there was a still photographer from Getty Images with us, photojournalist Jonathan Torgovnik. As things got really out of control, I saw a looter on the roof of the store they’d broken into throw what I think was part of a concrete block into the crowd. It hit a small boy in the head. I saw him collapse. More chunks of concrete were being thrown at the looters on the roof. The injured boy couldn’t get up. He’d try and then collapse again. Blood was pouring from his head. He was conscious but had no control over his body. I was afraid someone on the roof would see him lying there and throw another cinder block piece onto him. I was afraid he’d get killed. No one seemed to be helping him. I ran to where he was struggling, and picked him up off the ground. I brought him to a spot about a hundred feet away. I could feel his warm blood on my arms. I stood him up, but he was clearly unable to walk. He wiped his bloody face, and I tried to reassure him. He had no idea where he was, and he clearly couldn’t walk, so I picked him up again and handed him over to someone behind that makeshift barricade. Tony, the American businessman, gave the boy a wet towel. He was then taken away by someone else. We don’t know what happened to him. I hope he’s ok.

Wow. I have no words. These photos are the least of the graphic images that have been posted by CNN HERE. If you are interested, there is video of this incident which contains some very graphic imagery as well. Check it out after the jump — but be warned, as I said, it’s kinda tough to watch …

What a terrible scene. I cannot even begin to imagine what it must be like for the survivors of Haiti to live like this. I, too, hope this young boy is OK. It looks like he lost a lot of blood. Thank goodness Anderson Cooper was there to help, even if his influence prolly didn’t change much, he most definitely made an impact (hopefully a good one) on this young man’s life. Wow.

Woops! Yes, I meant that once again he is in the thick of things to help people, without exploiting them. I agree, Peppy, he does seem like a fire fighter or a police officer.

@Madsme @Ama Thank you so much for the suggestions! I will be checking out the local blood bank and see what they need to collect. It is nice to know that people can help in other ways.

Wasn’t he scared of HIV ?(G-d forbid)

  4. Amanda says:

shoho, I imagine when you’re “in the moment” you don’t think about that, but hopefully afterward he was able to wash his hands and had no cuts.

I, like many of the others who posted here, am not one to cry normally at something like this, but I did. What a truly selfless act. Props to Anderson (and also Dr. Gupta) for what they’re doing in Haiti. Anderson isn’t just a reporter, or a journalist – he clearly has a huge, tender heart and THAT is beautiful. We need more people like him in this world.

  6. Bridget says:

Wow. Stunned. The poor dazed little boy trying to clear his face of blood? Heartbreaking. Anderson Cooper, I am immensely… impressed? Is that the word? More in awe.

It’s ironic that the last videos I watched online were all about Rush Limbaugh and Pat Robertson’s DISGUSTING comments concerning Haiti and the relief effort. The difference between that and this is astounding.

That look on Cooper’s face in the split second he decided to put the camera equipment down and take the boy to safety is what just renewed my faith in the human race. Thank you Anderson.

What Anderson Cooper was great but, what I’m having trouble comprehending is why Cooper left the boy with this person behind the wall?? Why didn’t he go all the way and take this injured boy to the american red cross or to see one of the volunteer doctors or nurses?? the boy was seriously injured he was taken out of harms way but still needed medical attention.

  10. A says:

Oh my god, that is horrible. That poor kid! :(
    I’m glad Cooper helped him.

  11. Polly says:

I hope that kid is okay, he looked completely dazed. Hopefully he got some medical attention.
Way to go Anderson, I’ll second what someone else has said, he restored my faith in humanity… if only for a little while.

  13. javajunko says:

wow..I thought he was hot and a cool guy before but this man is just perfect in every way, what an amazing hero and selfless act of courage. Anderson Cooper has to be thee best reporter out there and someone i 100% trust with his reporting. Sigh, he’s like the perfect man,

  14. Adam Bomb says:

Anderson Cooper, in addition to being smokin’ hot, is now my hero. Seriously, what a man!!!

  15. nat says:

This guy also just blasted the gov of PA for airlifting 50+ adopted orphans out of Haiti…..

  16. jennie says:

my gyno looks exactly like him

  17. daniel says:

i want Anderson as my boyfriend right know! u_U

  18. kristin says:

Donate, donate, donate! And if you can’t afford it, ask around. There are plenty of alternatives. My daughter’s daycare is collecting diapers, wipes and other baby items. I donated every unopened package we had at home and plan to stop by the store tonight to get diapers.

AC – what an inspiration! I just hope that little boy is ok. This is a tragedy on all fronts. And I agree, Bridget, Limbaugh and Robertson are pathetic, self serving assholes.

  19. Jenn says:

you know, there is just nothing to not like about Anderson. And he just keeps doing things that make me like him more.
