Anderson Cooper Saves Lives In Haiti

Anderson Cooper, who is currently in Haiti reporting for CNN, got himself caught in a situation where he felt compelled to save the life of a young boy whose life was endangered by a looting situation nearby. Here are a few graphic photos of Anderson bravely saving this young boy’s life and some deets from Cooper himself on what went down:

We were covering another story when we heard shots being fired. We ran toward the sound and found a store being looted. Two Haitian police officers were occasionally firing into the air to try to keep order, but that only worked for a few moments, then the looting would begin again. They were stealing boxes of candles. An American businessman named Tony who owns two stores nearby barricaded one street to keep looters away. He had armed the two Haitian police with automatic weapons, and they were assisting him, but they were not able to control anything beyond their barricade. It quickly became a free-for-all. Young men began fighting one another for the stolen items. A number of young men had knives, and planks of wood, screwdrivers and rocks. They were using their improvised weapons to threaten and injure others who had stolen items from the store. The robbers were now being robbed. One group of looters whipped another man with a leather belt. They punched him as well, and they stole the sack of goods he’d just stolen. I was in the midst of the melee with Charlie Moore, my producer, Neil Hallsworth my cameraman, Vlad Duthiers, my translator, and there was a still photographer from Getty Images with us, photojournalist Jonathan Torgovnik. As things got really out of control, I saw a looter on the roof of the store they’d broken into throw what I think was part of a concrete block into the crowd. It hit a small boy in the head. I saw him collapse. More chunks of concrete were being thrown at the looters on the roof. The injured boy couldn’t get up. He’d try and then collapse again. Blood was pouring from his head. He was conscious but had no control over his body. I was afraid someone on the roof would see him lying there and throw another cinder block piece onto him. I was afraid he’d get killed. No one seemed to be helping him. I ran to where he was struggling, and picked him up off the ground. I brought him to a spot about a hundred feet away. I could feel his warm blood on my arms. I stood him up, but he was clearly unable to walk. He wiped his bloody face, and I tried to reassure him. He had no idea where he was, and he clearly couldn’t walk, so I picked him up again and handed him over to someone behind that makeshift barricade. Tony, the American businessman, gave the boy a wet towel. He was then taken away by someone else. We don’t know what happened to him. I hope he’s ok.

Wow. I have no words. These photos are the least of the graphic images that have been posted by CNN HERE. If you are interested, there is video of this incident which contains some very graphic imagery as well. Check it out after the jump — but be warned, as I said, it’s kinda tough to watch …

"I definitely want to have a child"
Beyoncé Does ‘Allure’ Magazine

A fierce lookin’ Beyoncé is featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of Allure magazine. In her coverstory interview, B talks about how she deffo wants to have a baby … just not yet:

Before a baby, what Beyoncé really wants is some R & R. “I definitely want to have a child, but I know from my nephew it’s a lot,” Knowles tells Allure magazine for its February issue of starting a family with husband Jay-Z. “I hope that those things will just happen naturally. I still haven’t had time to relax.” Who can relax when you’re popping out hit songs and maintaining a voluptuous figure? “I always say, ‘I don’t want to lose my curves.’ I like firm curves,” Knowles, 28, says. “You can never do enough squats, you can never do enough sit-ups. I like for women to look feminine.” Feminine? How about Bootylicious? The singer/actress can’t seem to shake the word coined in the Destiny’s Child song of the same name. It’s even been added to the Oxford Dictionary. “I still can’t believe it! It’s hilarious,” Knowles says. “I actually wish it was another word that I created. I wish it didn’t have ‘booty’ in it.”

Beyoncé is a businesswoman before she is anything else, save for a life performer. I have no doubt that she will have a baby or two some day but I totally get why she ain’t ready just yet. She has been workin’ her bootylicious ass off for years, she deserves a break … and then a baby. The woman is smart, y’all. I totally get it. After the jump, check out some photos from B‘s Allure mag photospread — she looks fantastic …

Congrats!!
Whitney Houston’s ‘I Look To You’ Goes Double Platinum

Yesterday we learned that the 2010 BET Honors were handed out in a taped ceremony last Saturday night that is scheduled to air on BET next month. During that awards show, Whitney Houston was among the honorees who was paid tribute to on stage. Today we learn that in addition to her BET Honors award, she was presented with a Double Platinum plaque by the RIAA for selling over 2 million copies of her latest album I Look To You:

This is fantastic news! It was only announced last month that I Look To You reached Platinum status, now just a few weeks later it’s sold another million copies! I am so happy that Whitney Hoston‘s comeback is well on track … she is most deserving of all of these accolades. Here’s to another million + in sales in the months to come. You know what all of this achievement means, right? Another new album from Whitney Houston can’t be far away :)

Depp leads the way of GQ's list of 'The 25 Most Stylish Men in the World'
Johnny Depp Does ‘GQ’ Magazine

GQ magazine is giving us a peek today at the cover of their upcoming new issue which will pay tribute to their list of The 25 Most Stylish Men in the World … and wouldn’t you know it but Johnny Depp has been chosen as the magazine’s Most Stylish coverstar:

Johnny Depp – At the Top of His Game

Barney’s Creative Director, Simon Doonan, Demystifies the Icon of Eccentric Cool
“Johnny Depp’s a unicorn—a really glamorous, one-of-a-kind eccentric. Usually guys try to fit in; they don’t want to get criticized. At any red-carpet event, there are going to be guys who look spiffy in their Prada or Armani tuxedos, but you wait for Johnny Depp, because he’s always going to look super-groovy and unconventional. He wears great man jewelry. He doesn’t shy away from color. He’s always peeking through his amazing hair. It doesn’t matter if Johnny Depp’s lying in a ditch—he’s always going to look incredible.”

As much as I love me some Johnny Depp, I don’t usually think of him as particularly stylish. His look is one that is more hobo than chic and I’d be hard-pressed to consider any man who wears leather arm cuffs outside of 1976 on the cutting edge of stylishness. That being said, he does make a pretty coverboy and I do find it funny/entertaining that he is shirtless on the cover of a magazine that lauds his stylishness … so I guess I can’t really complain. I’m anxious to see who else made the list of GQ‘s 25 Most Stylish Men in the World. I’m guessing David Beckham, Tom Ford and Neil Patrick Harris might make that list. Who do YOU think will make the cut?

The other side of 'Sleeping Beauty'
Tim Burton To Tell The Tale Of Maleficent

Exciting news to pass along to Tim Burton fans today, it is being reported that he is planning to do a retelling of the Sleeping Beauty from the point of view of villain Maleficent. I mean … how awesome does that sound?! Here are the deets as reported by Ain’t It Cool News:

Hey folks, Harry here with the coolest whisper I’ve heard in a while. I was chatting to a fella I know tonight, and this person heard that Tim Burton is developing another classic Disney fairy tale in a quasi Live Actiony kinda way. It seems that Tim has a hankering for SLEEPING BEAUTY… but not really… You see, he’s going to tell the story from Maleficent’s point of view. In fact, it’ll be called MALEFICENT.

She was always the most interesting character in that story, but we never knew why she hated those three little fairy wenches… or what indignity she suffered at the hands of Aurora’s parents. Yeah, I’m on board… if only it ends with Maleficent with a sword in her heart in dragon form. Cuz that’ll rule. Think about how long this plotline was carried out over. She has quite a tale to tell. Let’s see where it pops up in Burton’s filmography. We’re hearing that DARK SHADOWS is stumbling a bit… Let’s see what Tim does next, he has some interesting choices before him.

This sounds like fantastic news. I’ve already been very impressed with Burton‘s work with Disney thus far (I’m chomping at the bit to see his take on Alice in Wonderland) but for him to tell a classic Disney tale from the point of view of the villain, well, I am 1000% on board. The notion of this movie idea reminds me of the short story that Neil Gaiman wrote that tells the Snow White story from the point of view of the “evil queen”. Gaiman‘s story is titled Snow, Glass, Apples and can be read in its entirety HERE. If Tim Burton is able to do for Sleeping Beauty what Gaiman did for Snow White with his short story then I have no doubt that Burton‘s Maleficent will be a smash hit!

Here Comes The Rain Again

LA has been pretty deary in the past couple of days but there have been peeks of sun every now and again to remind us that we live in the Golden State. For the most part, when the rain is falling (or even if it looks like it’s gonna fall) then the drivers turn into idiots so David and I decided to stay in yesterday:

Now y’all know that I’ve been on a reading kick lately so I had plenty to occupy my time as I took shelter from the rain. I know a lot of folks don’t love the rain but I think it’s a nice change of pace. I just heard thunder outside, I can’t even tell you the last time I heard thunder. I hope we get some lightning too cuz that’s my fave part of any rainstorm :) Today brings us the arrival of our second rainstorm and we still have one more to go later on in the week … right about the time that David and I fly back to Detroit to surprise my dad for his birthday. Fun times.

Tonight, David and I are taking our dear Kirsten out for dinner for the last time before she moves back to Australia at the end of this month. It’ll be bittersweet to spend time with her tonight.

Oh yeah, it would take a lot to get me to haul my cookies out to the desert to partake in a 3-day music festival like this and, I’m afraid, this line-up ain’t the kind to get me to go. I almost went the year that Prince headlined one of the nights but even that wasn’t enough to tempt me out to the desert. In any event, I’m certain that a large number of people will make their way out to Indio, CA for this year’s fest and will have a spectacular time. Are any of y’all planning to attend the Coachella Festival this year?

Bad News / Good News
Fox Is Planning A US Version Of ‘Torchwood’

Okay … before y’all lose your shizz over the headline of this post, I should give you the head’s up that there is good news to go along with this seemingly “bad” news that Fox is planning to make a US version of the HIT UK series Torchwood. While I am vehemently opposed to the plan by MTV to make a US version of Skins (which is wholly unnecessary and will do nothing but mar the already kickass original UK version of the show), I’m not necessarily opposed to a US version of Torchwood … and here’s why. Not only are the original producers on board for the remake but Fox is trying to secure Torchwood star John Barrowman (and perhaps other original stars of the series as well) to be on the US version of the show. Read on …

Huge news for sci-fi fans: Fox is developing a stateside version of the U.K. hit series “Torchwood.” The project is from BBC Worldwide Prods., with original series creator Russell Davies writing the script. A more straight-faced spinoff of “Doctor Who,” “Torchwood” is about a covert group that investigates and fights alien activity. Two series aired domestically on BBC America as well as last year’s well reviewed stand-alone miniseries, “Children of Earth,” which broke all ratings records for the network. (If you’re a fan of serious sci fi such as “Battlestar Galatica” and haven’t seen “Children of Earth,” rent it. You don’t need to know anything about the series. And I know the previews for “Torchwood” can look silly. Trust me, it’s terrific. Like “24″ with aliens). Unlike U.S. adaptations that have gone awry, “Torchwood” fans can take comfort that the original producing team is on board. In addition to Davies, exec producers include Davies’ producing partner Julie Gardner (former head of drama at BBC Wales for the show’s first season) and Jane Tranter (another BBC vet, now exec VP programming and production at BBC Worldwide Prods. in the U.S.). Also, some of the current cast — most likely John Barrowman, who plays the immortal Capt. Jack Harkness — might star if Fox orders “Torchwood” to pilot. As for the new show’s plot, the U.S. version will contain a global story line compared to the more localized sensibility of the first two BBC seasons.

Torchwood is a fantastic series and is well worth checking out. I am a bit worried about this talk of a remake but I am encouraged that Barrowman may appear on the US version as Capt. Jack Harkness. On second thought, it occurs to me that the rest of the Torchwood cast would be re-cast by American actors … especially the Gwen character. Imma hafta think on this for a while before I form an opinion. I’m curious as to what a new Torchwood might be like but I really love the localized setting of Cardiff that the original series has and I really love the original cast of characters … especially Gwen. What worries me most of all is the way Fox treats sci-fi shows like this. If their plan is to exile it to Friday nights, I’m not at all interested in investing at all. What do y’all think, Torchwood fans? Is this a good idea or a terribly horrible one?

Will feature in an upcoming ep helmed by, get this, Joss Whedon!!!
Neil Patrick Harris To Guest Star On ‘Glee’

Great news … the awesome show Glee is about to get a whole lot awesomer. In addition to reports that Jennifer Lopez will be appearing on the show up in an upcoming new ep, Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Neil Patrick Harris (currently on CBS‘s How I Met Your Mother) is this close to appearing on an upcoming ep of Glee. And, get this, the ep in question will be helmed by the amazingly amazing Joss Whedon. Okay, you can pick up your jaw off the floor:

Neil Patrick Harris is nearing a deal to appear in the May sweeps Glee episode that’s being helmed by his Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog director, Joss Whedon. In retrospect, maybe I should’ve called this particular scoop “ginormous.” I think it’s warranted, don’t you? Anyway, Harris wants to do it, and Glee creator Ryan Murphy sure as hell wants him to — he’s creating a role especially for the How I Met Your Mother scene-stealer. And yes, the part includes a little song-’n’-dance. In fact, the gig not only would reunite Harris with Whedon, it’d also reteam him with Zachary Woodlee, who choreographed the musical number in HIMYM’s recent 100th episode. The one possible snag — and there’s always one, isn’t there? CBS has to OK its MVP’s appearance on Fox’s breakout hit. But at least since HIMYM and Glee are both produced by 20th Century Fox, there’s no conflict on their end.

This.Would.Rule.All! If CBS does not let NPH appear on the show, I’ll eat my hat. It would be a crime to keep this joyous union occur. HELLO, Joss Whedon + Neil Patrick Harris + Glee … are you kidding me? Glee is so popular it can pretty much do whatever the hell it wants to … as is obvious by this planned ep. I can’t even begin to imagine what other amazing things the show might have up its sleeve if all of this pans out. I’m a Glee fan but this NPH/Whedon ep just might make me a Gleek for life! Um, who’s excited?
