"[Fox] wanted to back away from the concept five minutes after they bought it"
Joss Whedon Explains Why ‘Dollhouse’ Failed

Okay, so this news item is about a month old but my boy Darion sent it to me on the off-chance that I missed seeing it when it came out and, wouldn’t you know it, I did miss it when it came out in early December. It’s such a great read that I felt it was worth sharing on the off-chance that some of you missed it too. Joss Whedon gave a great interview to the Chicago Tribune, excerpted below from the SciFiWire, wherein he talks in great detail as to why Dollhouse ended up getting canceled. Long story short, it’s Fox‘s fault and now that the show is dunzo he can say so publicly. Read on …

“The problems that the show encountered weren’t standalone versus mythology [episodes],” Whedon said. “Basically, the show didn’t really get off the ground because the network pretty much wanted to back away from the concept five minutes after they bought it. And then ultimately, the show itself is also kind of odd and difficult to market. I actually think they did a good job, but it’s just not a slam-dunk concept.”

“We got the espionage that the network wants, but it’s the questions about identity that we want,” he noted. “There are other things about the show that never came back, and I didn’t really realize it until the second season—[there were] things that we were ultimately sort of dancing around. … We always found ourselves sort of moving away from what had been part of the original spark of the show and that ultimately just makes it really hard to write these stories.”

“People responded to ['Dollhouse' by saying], ‘This is trafficking. This is sex for money.’ It wasn’t just sex,” Whedon said. Part of the problem was “the other implications of what was originally supposed to be somewhat more of a fantasy. The real-world version of [this kind of activity] was I think what made the network really twitchy and I can’t really fault them for that. I just thought when I went in and pitched it …you know, it frightened me too [but I thought] we all got that that was what we were doing.”

Once he’s done making “Dollhouse,” he’ll continue to work with Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon on a “Dr. Horrible” sequel, the title of which Whedon declined to reveal. He will say that he expects to corral star Neil Patrick Harris and “the rest of the gang” from the first “Dr. Horrible” for the second installment of the Internet musical.

“What we need to do is get enough time to really solidify what we’ve got, really get the [script] in shape, and then it all becomes about Neil and his availability. We’ve been basically telling him, ‘Do whatever you want,’ which he clearly took to mean, ‘Do everything there is,’” Whedon said with a laugh. “But we were like, until we have a script, we can’t really think of a schedule or a venue or how we’re going to do this and what size it will be, if we’re going to get any kind of any kind of backing from a studio or an independent.”

I sincerely hope for Whedon‘s sake (and for the countless sakes of his legions of fans) that he no longer works with Fox again on another TV series. I don’t think I could take the promise of a new Whedon show on Fox again only to live in fear of when the network will decide to eventually kill the show. Joss Whedon needs to be on a TV network that appreciates him … one that fans will be able to pay back with ratings. I hope that union will happen someday. Until then, I’m sure we’ll be looking to the Internets for new Whedon projects. Blah … it’s just so crappy. I’ll be over here watching my Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVDs if you need me :(

Classic 80’s Album Soundtracks Reinvented With Superheros

MTV‘s Buzzworthy Blog featured a few amazing new graphics that were created by comic book artist Cliff Chiang who re-envisioned a few classic 80′s soundtrack albums with superheroes in them. Yeah, it makes more sense if I just show you … behold:

When comic book artist Cliff Chiang isn’t busy drawing Batman, Green Arrow and Wonder Woman, he puts his illustration skills to awesome use, recreating classic 1980s album covers and populating them with some of our favorite superheroes. Tracked down via Buzzfeed, Chiang’s visual remixes incorporate the likes of Batgirl (into Prince’s Purple Rain), The Teen Titans (into the cover for the soundtrack to The Breakfast Club), and Elektra (into the soundtrack to Flashdance).

Aren’t these awesome? I love them all but the Batgirl/Purple Rain one is my fave … it’s just, perfect. I really love inventive stuff like this … it’s a great way to see things that we already love in a fresh, new light. Which one is your fave?

Challenges former BFF Jon Gosselin to a fight
Michael Lohan Shows Off New Tattoo, New Girlfriend

First we found out that Lindsay Lohan‘s estranged father Michael Lohan got himself a new tattoo, then we found out that he got a new girlfriend (Kate Major, who is Jon Gosselin‘s ex-gf) and today we get to see all of that awesome tragedy all at once. Michael Lohan, his new squeeze Kate Major all all of his tattoos were on hand at a press conference for some celebrity boxing event wherein he publicly called out Jon Gosselin to fight him. Am I dreaming, have you ever heard of something so awesome?

Celebrity boxing means the A-list of the tabloid set are back in town. Kate Major and Lindsay Lohan’s dad were with Fox 29′s Jennaphr Frederick on Thursday morning at Varsity Fitness in Bala Cynwyd. Frederick used a hand-drawn map to draw the ties between the divorced celebrity father of starlet Lindsay Lohan, the former Star Magazine tabloid writer, and the now-divorced parents of eight and former reality TV show stars Jon and Kate Gosselin, of “Jon & Kate Plus 8″ fame. Major – a longtime friend of Lohan’s – dated Jon Gosselin while was in the midst of divorcing his wife. Lohan is in town because he’ll be fighting Saturday night at the Philadelphia Airport Ramada. After Frederick explained all of the relationships, Lohan chimed in, “Frankie’s Steaks has actually made an offer to help me challenge Jon Gosselin to a $125,000 fight when he’s off of his exclusivity with TLC. In May, I am proposing that Jon and I fight for $125,000, and the best cheesesteak in town, Frankie’s Steaks, is going to sponsor the fight for us.” Asked if she and Lohan have been “hanging out,” Major said they have. But she wouldn’t answer if they’ve been dating. “You know, I can’t say on that,” she answered, laughing. Lohan jumped in to say, “We’re friends. No, we’re friends. She lives out at my house, she moved here from Chicago, and she’s got employment in New York, and she’s in my house.” Then, they showed off their tattoos, which Lohan clarified “aren’t matching,” even though hey went together to both get tattoos of sacred hearts. “It stands for new beginning and hearts on fire for God and so on. I’m doing some mission work coming up in March,” Lohan explained. “And mine was a dedication to my mother, who passed away. So, that’s why I have mine,” Major said. Should Lohan and Gosselin fight? Major was unequivocal in her answer: “Absolutely. I mean, I would love to see that.” And she staked her claim on the opening line. Asked who would win, Major said, “Oh, Michael. Please, Jon has no chance. But he needs the money, so …” “We’ll see. If he fights me, we’ll find out,” Lohan said.

Of course by “awesome” I mean “so sadly pathetic that you can’t help but laugh”. I mean … seriously? Michael Lohan is gonna fight for money at the Philadelphia Airport Ramada with Jon Gosselin‘s ex-girlfriend rooting in his corner? I mean … yeah … what more is there to say. LOL!!

The author will be speaking on campus next month
Neil Gaiman Is Coming To UCLA

Amazing news for SoCal fans of author Neil Gaiman (who just released his first short film titled Statuesque) … UCLA is hosting an evening with Gaiman at on campus at Royce Hall as part of their UCLA Live series next month. Having been lucky enough to attend one of Gaiman‘s speaking engagements in the past, I can assure you that it would be WELL worth your time to check him out in person. Here are some deets about his appearance at UCLA on February 4:

After years as the most famous writer you’d never heard of, Neil Gaiman’s recent Hollywood successes have propelled him into celebrity orbit. After co-writing the films “Beowulf” and “Stardust,” the animated version of his novella, “Coraline,” was released in 2009 to unanimous rave reviews. But Gaiman has been a prominent and prolific creator of comics, novels, film, journalism and poetry for more than two decades. He created the best-selling DC Comics series “Sandman,” which was the first comic ever to receive a major literary award. “The Graveyard Book,” published in 2008, received the Newbery Medal, the top prize for children’s literature. At the podium, Gaiman shares stories of imagination and urges audiences to take note of the creative ideas that linger in each of us.

Since this info has newly come to my attention, I can assure you that I will do everything I can to attend. Not only is Neil Gaiman a masterful writer but he is an equally adept public speaker and I cannot *wait* to hear him live again. If you are in the area, I really suggest you get your tickets to see him at UCLA next month. Click HERE (UCLA students can buy their tix HERE) to procure your tickets and hopefully I’ll see you there :)

The TV Guide
Buffy Lives!!!

Yesterday a nice big brown box arrived from one of my fave online retailers, Things From Another World, and inside said box was something I had ordered a couple of weeks ago and have been anxiously awaiting. At last, I now have the PERFECT muse to sit on my desk to provide inspiration 24-7. Behold, the toon version of Buffy Summers, the Vampire Slayer:

Unfortunately, this fantastic Buffy statue has gone back up in price since I ordered mine but it really is a great acquisition for any BtVS fan. As you can see, I have a few little trinkets on my desk (including a Dexter Morgan action figure and a Rita Bennett-Morgan bobble head) because I like to keep it fun in my office :)

In other happy news, our friend Isaac arrived safe and sound last night and is already off taking meetings around town. I’m not sure what our plan is for tonight but I’m heading out for a haircut first ;) The weekend is nearly upon us … time sure flies when you are having fun :)

The 36th Annual
The 2010 People’s Choice Awards Are Handed Out

Celebrities of varying stature made their way out to the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in downtown LA last night to attend the People’s Choice Awards which were handed out in a lavish, televised ceremony. As you may know, the PCAs are voted on by the public so the winners are chosen by the fans … which makes this awards show unique among the many others. Here are a few photos from the red carpet arrivals (where newly engaged country singer Carrie Underwood was happy to show off her new bling — again) along with some deets about who won awards last night … I understand it was a good night for vampires:

The people have chosen vampires. “The Twilight Saga,” “True Blood” and “The Vampire Diaries” all sucked up trophies Wednesday at the 36th annual People’s Choice Awards. “Twilight” won four trophies, including favorite movie, franchise and on-screen team for the dreamy trio of Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, who also picked up the breakout male actor award. The undead HBO fable “True Blood” and the soapy supernatural CW series “The Vampire Diaries” were respectively selected as favorite TV obsession and favorite new TV drama. Other winners in categories spanning movies, TV and music included “Inglourious Basterds” as favorite independent movie and Lady Gaga as favorite pop and breakout music artist. Queen Latifah, who returned as host of the fan-favorite ceremony for the fourth consecutive year, kicked off the show at the Nokia Theatre with a jazzy name-dropping number. Stars such as Hugh Jackman, Mariah Carey, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Ashton Kutcher, Taylor Swift and Ellen DeGeneres were on hand to accept their awards selected by Internet votes. “One for each of Sandra Bullock’s toes,” joked 11-time People’s Choice Awards champion DeGeneres. Other TV winners included “American Idol” as favorite competition show, “Glee” as favorite new TV comedy, Steve Carell as favorite TV comedy actor, Alyson Hannigan as favorite TV comedy actress, “The Big Bang Theory” as favorite TV comedy, “House” as favorite TV drama, Hugh Laurie as favorite TV drama actor and “Supernatural” as favorite fantasy TV show. Winners in the movie categories included Bullock as favorite movie actress, Jackman as favorite action star, “The Proposal” as favorite comedy movie and “Up” for favorite family movie. Sacha Baron Cohen, appearing as himself and not as his alter-egos Borat or Bruno, presented Johnny Depp with a special award as favorite movie actor of the decade. “The only reason that any of us are up here is because of you,” Depp told the audience. Throughout the show, Latifah appeared in spoofs of “Twilight” and “Paranormal Activity,” which featured a cameo by Cloris Leachman clad in a sexy leather ensemble. The show also featured performances by Mary J. Blige, Cobra Starship and Nicole Scherzinger, as well as debut footage from “Clash of the Titans,” “Robin Hood” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains.”

It sounds like it was a fun show, unfortch I wasn’t home to watch. But you had to know that if the public was gonna be voting on the awards then the hot vampire trend going on in Hollywood these days was gonna be well-rewarded. I was very pleased with many of last night’s winners. After the jump, check out some photos from the press room of some of my fave folks who took home the pretty glass trophies …

Good vs. Evil
Meet The Cast Of ‘Survivor: Heroes Vs. Villains’

During the season finale ep of Survivor: Samoa last month we learned that the new season of Survivor would pit opposing teams made up of contestant All-Stars from previous seasons in a battle of Heroes vs. Villains. Today, we learn which former castmembers have been brought back to the island in this latest battle royale of winner takes all. Behold, the cast of Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains:

Not even “Boston Rob” Mariano’s newborn baby could stop him from returning to “Survivor.” Mariano is among 20 former contestants who will compete in CBS’ “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains,” the reality series’ 20th season, premiering Feb. 11 (8 p.m. EST). He left behind 4-week-old daughter Lucia Rose and wife, Amber Brkich, who bested Mariano to win the “All-Stars” edition in 2004 and accepted his marriage proposal during the finale. “If she was out here with me, I don’t think I’d have a chance in hell at winning,” the former “Survivor: Marquesas” and “All-Stars” player said of his wife. “I think they’d get rid of both of us right away,” he said. “With her not here, I think I’ll have a little bit of room to maneuver. Hopefully, I can sway some people my way.” The cutthroat Mariano will be joined on the “villains” tribe by players such as bratty waitress Courtney Yates (“China”); cantankerous videographer Randy Bailey (“Gabon”); sarcastic cyclist Tyson Apostol (“Tocantins”); and pompous soccer coach Benjamin Wade (“Tocantins”). Mariano’s biggest handicap? Not being familiar with new players like Wade. Wade, who calls himself The Dragon Slayer, says his motto is “trust no one, slay everyone.” “I’m not going to trust anyone, even people I’ve played with before. I’d like to say that I can trust Tyson because he and I were rock-solid in the last game. Maybe that’s too obvious, and other people will look at that.” The cast members — except for “Samoa” bad boy Russell Hantz, who was still filming the 19th season — were individually interviewed in secret last August before production on “Heroes vs. Villains” began in Samoa. It will be the third time on “Survivor” for nine of the castaways, many of whom participated in the “All-Stars” and “Fans vs. Favorites” editions. “I have the opportunity to do something that most people don’t even get to do once in their lifetime,” said Jerri Manthey, “The Australian Outback” and “All-Stars” mean girl. “I’m doing it three times. Just the opportunity itself is enough reason for me to say `yes’ to this again. I couldn’t sit at home knowing they were doing this and be OK with that.” The “heroes” tribe will include lovable mentor Rupert Boneham (“Pearl Islands,” “All-Stars”); emotional pinup model Jessica “Sugar” Kiper (“Gabon”); and Texas hunk Colby Donaldson (“Australian Outback,” “All-Stars”), who is hoping Manthey won’t be gunning for him this time. “Jerri is like a bad fungus,” said Donaldson. “You can get rid of it, scrub it, do whatever you want to clean yourself of it, but eventually it comes back. This is my third game that I’ve played with Jerri, and she was quite instrumental in getting me out the last time. I don’t have an ax to grind. Hopefully, she’s gotten the revenge out of her system.” Half of the “Heroes vs. Villains” cast are contestants who won or came in second place during their “Survivor” seasons. The four previous $1 million prize winners returning to the game are “villains” Sandra Diaz-Twine (“Pearl Islands”) and Parvati Shallow (“Cook Islands,” “Micronesia”) and “heroes” James “J.T.” Thomas Jr. (“Tocantins”) and Tom Westman (“Palau”). “I do feel like I have a target on my back as a past winner,” said Westman. “You hope you’re not walking into a stacked deck where everyone doesn’t want you to get anywhere near the cash. You could get the early boot for that. I acknowledge the danger, but this game is funny. People usually align with people they think can help them get further” … The 20th season will be the fifth to feature former contestants. Eighteen castaways were assembled for the “All-Stars” season. The “Guatemala” chapter heralded the return of “Palau” stalwarts Stephenie LaGrossa, who will be on the “heroes” tribe, and Bobby Jon Drinkard. The “Micronesia” 16th season featured a tribe of 10 vets battling a group of fans. The “heroes” team will also include nurse Cirie Fields (“Panama,” “Micronesia”); pageant queen Amanda Kimmel (“China,” “Micronesia”); medical student Candice Woodcock (“Cook Islands”); grave digger James Clement (“China,” “Micronesia”); and on the “villains” side, account manager Danielle DiLorenzo (“Panama”). Richard Hatch, who was convicted in 2006 of failing to pay taxes on the $1 million he earned for winning the Borneo-set first season of “Survivor” in 2000, asked a judge last July if he could leave home confinement early to compete in the 20th season. He argued that any money he earned from the reality show could be used to pay his tax obligations. His request was denied.

It totally sucks that the original OG villain from the very first season of Survivor, convicted felon Richard Hatch, wasn’t allowed to play the game … he would’ve made for some great gameplay, methinks. I’m happy that that evil beyotch Jeri from Survivor: Australia (season two) is back tho … she has to be the villain I loathed the most (tho, Russell from the most recent season of Survivor is really giving her a run for her money). I’m really happy that some of my faves are coming back (Tom, Cirie, Rupert, Colby). It’s gonna be a lot of fun to see these fan faves go head to head again. February 11 can’t get here soon enough for me! Wee!!

Brrrrrrrrrr!
Madonna & Child Brave The Bitter NYC Cold

OY! It must be cooooooooooold in NYC these days because Madonna and her young Brazilian model/dj toyboy Jesus Luz (who we learned yesterday is featured in a new photo book titled Icon) were spotted on the streets of Manhattan covered up from head to toe … literally … yet, fashionably:

The world’s most famous pop star clearly was not ready for her close-up as she left the cinema in New York last night. Dressed to keep out the chill in a black fur Russian style hat, a sensible padded coat and trousers, Madonna, 51, also used her waffle-style mesh scarf to completely hide her face. With her hat pulled down almost shielding her eyes she … made her way to her waiting car with boyfriend Jesus Luz, 22. The young Brazilian model himself was wearing a balaclava which hid most of his features. Quite how she could see where she was going was something of a mystery as she strode purposely in front of Jesus.

Two steps behind, Chuy, that’s how her Madgesty likes it. Meh. This face cover-thing may look ridic on most people but I think it kinda works on Maddy. She paired it nicely with the black parka & fuzzy chapeau … she looks kinda like a superhero, or Snake Eyes. Yeah, I don’t hate this look so much in this instance … but I’m sure I will hate it if the trend catches on. Ugh.
