Amazing author and storyteller Neil Gaiman (who I love more than words can say) has written and directed a short film titled Statuesque which stars actor Bill Nighy and musician (and Gaiman girlfriend) Amanda Palmer. I understand the film debuted on UK television last week but has since made its way to the Internets so that the rest of us can check it out. Here are a few screencaps along with some deets about the film itself:

If you made a short list of the most important comic book writers of the last two decades, one of the names right near the top of that list would have to be Neil Gaiman, whose 75-issue run on “The Sandman” (1989-1996) stands as a towering achievement in graceful storytelling and genre ambition. He’s gone on to plenty of other great successes (“Coraline” and “The Graveyard Book” may actually live up to the overused and always suspicious term “instant classic”), and today we bring you a project that pulled him away from his familiar perch behind the writing desk. The whimsical short film “Statuesque” was written and directed by Gaiman and stars Bill Nighy and Amanda Palmer.

The film is only a little over 8 minutes long and features no dialogue at all but it very clearly and lovingly tells a Gaiman story (that may or may not have one of those clever twists he so famously weaves into his work) that fans both new and old will, I think, love immensely. Matthew Broderick, we we last saw with his wife Sarah Jessica Parker and newborn twins Xmas week, ventured out into the cold NYC weather yesterday to get himself a haircut … and while he was getting his hair washed, he started fooling around in the mirror looking very much like the character Ferris Bueller that made him a star in the late ’80′s:

I gotta say … altho over 20 years has passed, the Matthew of today doesn’t look all that different from the Matthew of 1986 (well, ok, he’s got a little less hair to get did these days). I have to believe that Broderick was paying homage to the famous shower scene in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off as he played at the hair salon yesterday. LOL!! He can still rock the soapy mohawk, no?

I enjoyed an absolutely BEAUTIFUL day here in SoCal yesterday … I can’t even begin to explain. The temps got into the 70′s and stayed there well past sunset. I ran out to do a few errands and discovered that I had no use for the jacket I brought along with me. It was warm, breezy and absolutely wonderful. If ever I need remember why I choose to live in SoCal, all I need is to remember that it gets so warm around here in January! Love it!!

David and I ventured out for dinner at Green Leaves to grab us a delicious vegetarian meal:

I love meat way too much to ever become a veggie but I can appreciate a vegetarian or vegan meal every now and then. Green Leaves has a fantastic menu to choose from, we had a great time.

I did a bit of reading and some walking outside last night … ’twas a great way to spend the evening.

Today, there is talk of Disneyland. Our friend Kanani, who is visiting from NYC, has never been … today might be the day we show her how fun it is. I know that some of y’all are heading back to work tomorrow and I sincerely hope you enjoyed your vacays and that the year ahead is a happy and fruitful one. 2010 is about to officially get underway!

One day after Lindsay Lohan shared her positive (if embarrassingly misspelled) New Year’s Resolution message with her faithful followers on Twitter, L. Lo deboarded her luxury yacht (where she’s been celebrating 2010 for the past few days) with little sister Aliana in tow to do a bit of shopping on the isle of St. Bart’s … but the poor dear forgot to wear clothing for the occasion:

It’s all well and good strutting around the beach showing off your trim figure in a skimpy bikini. But Lindsay Lohan could have chosen more suitable attire than a barely-there two piece for a bit of late night shopping. The Mean Girls star is currently holidaying on the Caribbean island of St Barts where she has spent the last few days hanging out with friends and seeing in the New Year. Yesterday she and her sister Ali spent the day aboard a yacht and sailed to the island’s main town of Gustavia where they hung out for the day, soaking up the sun. Lohan started the day dressed in a long black vest over her swimsuit, which looked chic and stylish when topped off with a cream trilby and very high black wedged shoes. But as the day progressed, Lohan, 23, ditched the cover-up and decided to spend the rest of the evening strutting around in her sexy two-piece instead. And while her younger sister modesty covered her bottom half with a floral skirt, Lindsay had absolutely no qualms about showing off as much of her slender figure as possible. The actress shopped for trinkets and souvenirs after spending the entire day in the town with her sibling and a small group of friends. She had visited the town’s Louis Vuitton store earlier in the day where she tried on shoes and a swimsuit very similar to the one she was already wearing. And while she was in the dressing room, Lindsay also bumped into Star Wars director George Lucas who was also shopping in the store.

I suppose you gotta appreciate the girl’s gumption. It’s prolly not that uncommon to see women in and out of shops on St. Bart’s wearing bikinis but, I dunno, a little modesty goes a long way. Still, Lindsay claims to have a more positive attitude about the coming year so let’s just give her the benefit of the doubt and not worry so much about this particular skimpy outing. It looks like she is having nice, safe fun. It might behoove her to cover up her bum a bit more when she goes out and about but, hey, she’s on holiday! It’s all good, right?

When last we saw Twilight hunk Kellan Lutz here on the blog, he was celebrating New Year’s Eve in Miami, FL wearing nothing but a pair of boardshorts and a pair of sunglasses. Today we get to see a couple photos of Kellan Trevor Donovan* in Miami snapped yesterday afternoon and, as you can see, homeboy was fully dressed for the occasion … rats:

I’m willing to overlook the fact that Trevor is wearing a pair of cargo-shorts that look dangerously close to manpris if only for the fact that he doesn’t wear them often (and mebbe a little for the fact that I happen to have a couple pairs of shorts are are of the same length, despite their almost manpriness) but I am NOT willing to overlook the fact that he is parading around sunny Mimi with a shirt on. Hello?! What the eff gives? If there is any place in the continental US where men should NOT be wearing shirts these days, it’s Miami, FL! If there is any man in the continental US that should not be wearing a shirt, it’s Trevor Donovan! I’m not sure what awful and cruel game he’s playing at but … it needs to stop. Lose the shirt, Trev. Don’t let your fans down in this way :(

*UPDATE: It turns out that the dude featured in these photos is NOT Kellan Lutz and is, in fact, Trevor Donovan from 90210 fame. With the hat and sunglasses, you can understand the confusion. The fact remains the same tho, shirtless is better :) Here’s hoping that both Trevor and Kellan lose the tops in ’10!

When last we heard from Tiger Woods, it was reported that he had slinked off to hide get help at a rehab center in Arizona just one day before AT&T announced that they were dropping their sponsorship of his professional golf career. Now we learn that while Tiger stays out of sight (wherever he is), his estranged wife Elin Nordegren has reportedly popped up in a French resort area with her twin sister Josefin, seemingly without a care in the world. Elin‘s been skiing her troubles away, y’all:

While the embattled Tiger Woods seems to have vanished, reports have surfaced that place his wife, Elin Nordegren, in a posh French Alps ski resort as she considers her future. While saying that Nordgren, 30, has put thousands of miles between herself and her scandal-ridden husband, 34, the U.K. tabloid the Sun reports that Nordegren has been staying in an $8,000-a-night, seven-room chalet outside the resort town of Chamonix since last Sunday. Sources tell PEOPLE that Nordegren and her twin sister Josefin, along with several close friends, have been skiing in Les Houches, an exclusive ski area adjacent to the Chamonix valley under the watchful paid eye of a private five-man French security force. Though the chalet includes a full staff as well as its own chef, Nordegren and her sister have been out to a local restaurant, hosting a New Year’s Eve celebration which at midnight became the twins’ 30th birthday party, according to one restaurant staffer. In its report, the Sun quotes a “family friend” as saying that Nordegren wished to escape “from the minefield Tiger has created by his behavior” and that Elin told her husband “she needed a lengthy time apart to reflect on how they might possibly salvage the marriage.”

I, personally, think it would be idiotic for Elin to try and salvage this marriage. Cheating is cheating and that alone is practically unforgivable. But I suppose concessions could be made if there was just one indiscretion to deal with … Tiger Wood‘s cavalcade of mistresses all around the country seems proof positive that he never respected his marriage or the vows he made to his wife and his rampant illicit behavior has, very literally, put her health in danger. Even if Tiger used “protection” every single time he allegedly cheated, there is not 100% guaranteed way to stay completely safe. Who knows what Tiger Woods brought home to his wife after all of his philandering (and we know he philandered outside of his marriage bed, he confessed as much in his own words). Ultimately the choice is hers alone. If she honestly believes he can change his ways, then I suppose it might be worth sticking it out. I can’t see how that is even possible but, then again, it’s not a situation that I can identify with at all. I wish her the best of luck tho … she’s in a tough predicament with a lot at stake, most importantly her family life. I hope she truly is able to ski her problems away.

Since David Beckham is in Milan, Italy these days training for the upcoming new soccer season with his European team AC Milan, wife and mother Victoria Beckham was left back in the UK to care for the kiddies for the remainder of the Xmas holiday. VB took her boys out for a night of theater (much like she and Becks did just before Xmas a couple of weeks ago) and used the opportunity to show off some of her fave baubles that she very likely picked up from Santa Claus:

Pulling her trilby down to cover her eyes, for once Victoria Beckham appeared to be hiding from the cameras as she left the theatre last night. But if there were any doubts about her identity the bag clasped in her hand soon dispelled them – it was one of Victoria’s treasured Birkin bags. The footballer’s wife, who has her own successful fashion range, owns more than 100 of the leather classics, a collection worth £1.5million. Last night she was modelling a shimmering white version in crocodile skin, carefully co-ordinated with her white wrap coat and trilby. The 35-year-old treated sons Romeo and Cruz to a trip to London’s Dominion Theatre to watch We Will Rock You. The Beckhams, who live in Los Angeles, spent Christmas at Beckingham Palace, their luxury country home near Sawbridgeworth in Hertfordshire. But while most people were out celebrating, Victoria and husband David enjoyed a quiet night in, watching the party on television. According to a source close to the family the couple were joined by David’s extended family for their low-key evening. ‘It was a quiet night, as it was their first New Year without David’s granddad Joe, who died last month,’ an insider said. ‘They just had a few drinks and watched the TV.’

It sounds like Les Beckhams had a very nice and quiet family holiday together this year and it looks like VB was happy to show off this crazy-expensive bag that she added her growing (and expensive) purse collection last Xmas. I believe the Beckham boys have to be back to school next week so they will, very likely, stay in the UK for a few more days before they return home to the sunny warmth of SoCal. I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of this shiny and extremely opulent bag around LA in no time.

Back in August we learned the news that The Walt Disney Company was interested in acquiring the entire catalog of Marvel Comics characters and, very surprisingly, Marvel was interested in selling. Today we learn that the deal, priced in the $4 billion dollar range, has been completed … Disney now owns the entire Marvel Comics company and catalog Marvel characters:

Walt Disney Co. completed its $4.24-billion acquisition of Marvel Entertainment Inc. on Thursday, bringing Spider-Man, Iron Man and 5,000 other characters under the same roof as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. Marvel shareholders approved the acquisition Thursday morning as expected. Marvel Chief Executive Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter, who owned 37% of Marvel stock, supported it. He will oversee the Marvel business and report to Disney CEO Robert Iger. Iger said the deal can help Disney grow revenue and profit, saying in a statement, “The creative and business potential of this combination is substantial.” Marvel shareholders received $30 per share in cash, plus 0.7452 of a Disney share for every Marvel share they owned. Disney shares closed Thursday at $32.25. That valued Marvel shares at $54.03 each, and put the purchase price at $4.24 billion. The deal is Disney’s largest since it bought Pixar Animation Studios Inc., the maker of “Up” and “Cars,” for $7.4 billion in stock in 2006. Separately, Pow Entertainment Inc., a company led by Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee, said it expanded a three-year relationship with Disney by giving Disney greater rights to its creative output and exclusive consulting services. Disney, based in Burbank, will take a 10% stake in Pow for $2.5 million, it said. Walt Disney Studios’ president of worldwide distribution, Bob Chapek, said it made sense to extend the relationship with the company partly because of Lee’s “knowledge and familiarity of the Marvel Universe.”

And that’s all she wrote … the Mouse now owns Spider-Man and Friends. I’m still not really pleased by this sale at all … the thought of such a major comic book company coming under the ownership of a company like Disney worries me to no end. I’m comforted by the fact that Disney‘s purchase of Pixar Animation has been a good union, with Pixar keeping full creative control. My hope is that Marvel will continue to have creative control as well … but if push ever comes to shove and Disney wants something a certain way, then as owners they will get their way. I suppose, at the end of the day, everyone has their selling price … everyone. Disney just happens to have the funds to pay Marvel their selling price. I just hope this deal with the Mouse doesn’t end up to be more like a deal with the Devil for Marvel.
