‘Glee’ Plans To Pay Homage To Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’

The post-Super Bowl XLV episode

Brace yourselves Michael Jackson fans … Glee is planning to put their spin on one of Michael Jackson‘s biggest songs ever! Entertainment Weekly magazine is reporting that the first post-Super Bowl XLV episode of 2011 will feature MJ‘s Thriller as one of the ep’s big musical numbers … and not only that but the song will be mashed-up with another as-yet unannounced song. That’s right, arguable the most famous MJ song will get the Glee treatment next year:

A Glee source confirms to EW exclusively that Glee will be tackling Michael Jackson’s iconic “Thriller” for their post-Super Bowl episode…but with a twist. The Jackson classic will be performed as a mash-up with another song, yet to be chosen. But the supersized episode, which our source says will be the most expensive in Glee history and likely one of televsion’s priciest episodes ever, will also feature covers of tunes by Black Eyed Peas, Lady Antebellum, and Katy Perry. Whew. I’m already worn out, and yet there’s more. Although “Thriller” is featured in the episode, it will not be a Michael Jackson tribute episode. Nor will it be a tribute to Bruce Springsteen, as rumors have suggested. In fact, our source says that the only pop star truly considered for the Super Bowl episode was Sir Elton John (expect a John tribute episode as part of Glee‘s back nine episodes). The post-Super Bowl episode will instead keep with the evening’s sports theme and focus on the local football championship and Sue Sylvester’s cheerleading regionals (the “Thriller” mash-up will be played during halftime of the onscreen pigskin game). Basically, it will be a classic episode of Glee, but just bigger and better; Gleeks can also expect appearances from season two fan favorites: Blaine (Darren Criss) and Coach Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones).

Um … and let’s not forget BRITNEY SPEARS! You may recall that we learned in September that our dear Britney will be appearing on Glee in a sizable acting role in the episode of Glee that will air just after the Super Bowl XLV next year … so if that claim is still valid, then Britney *should* be appearing in this Thriller episode. HMMM. I guess we’ll have to wait and see about that but we do know now that Glee will take on Thriller … which should make a lot of people happy AND a lot of people not so happy. Which team are you? Are you excited that Glee will be doing Michael Jackson‘s Thriller?

I am pumped! I think they way they shoot a little of now into these songs and put them in high school contexts is such a fun thing to watch! I can’t wait to see how they put the “Glee” spin on this song!

  2. Jennifer

I’ll watch..but I seriously don’t get this show. But I love MJ too much not to see it. My husband is a Rocky Horror fan so we watched that one but still didn’t like the show.

  3. Alicia

NNNnnoooooooooo! Ugh. Pfffsh. I wouldn’t mind them doing MJ songs, but Thriller? Come on.

  4. Sam

Singing an MJ song and nailing it is HARD….I hope these kids know what they’re doing…there’s a zillion ultrafans that’ll be watching!

  5. krissy

I don’t think that Britney is going to be on again. I think it was a rumor that was never verified.

  6. PeaNut Butta

Just NO to Glee in general…

  7. Zee

Covering Britney Spears is one thing but Michael Jackson? I’m not sure they’ll be able to pull it off…I hope they do but I doubt it.

Trent I actually could swear I read an article where Ryan Murphy said it was a rumor and there was no other Britney episode planned

  9. CHASE

I PRAY THAT THIS HAPPENS! How awesome would it be if Britney were singing “Thriller” and leading the gleeks behind her?!?!?!?!?! My brain just exploded at the idea. Srsly, bro.

  10. This is quite curious, because very recently MTV.com posted a story about Britney recreating Thriller. But I don’t recall it being about Glee. I do believe Britney will be on Glee again, but it may or many not be after the Superbowl.

Trent, even in the only original source of the rumor, AOL, they said “there is no confirmation yet about the second episode”. Don’t you think that if they are sending out info to hype the Super Bowl episode and the Thriller performance that they would have mentioned her appearing again?

I dont appreciate the fact MJ isn’t getting his own special show like Madonna or Britney, but I credit to anyone’s natural unability to capture an MJ song…only MJ does it and does it right. Notice most tributes to him or of an instrumental or dance nature, but never a singing nature. Cuz no one can sing them like MJ can.
