Watch: The NSFW Red Band Trailer For ‘I Love You Phillip Morris’

"Gay, Gay, Gay, Gay, Gay!"

Here is our first look at the official poster artwork for the new film I Love You Phillip Morris which has been having a bit of trouble getting released here in the US. Based on a true story, I Love You Phillip Morris tells the tale of an ostentatious gay man named Steven Russell (played by Jim Carrey) who feels he must commit fraud in order to pay for his extravagant lifestyle … and ends up going to prison to meet the love of his life — Phillip Morris (played by Ewan McGregor):

Steven Russell (Jim Carrey) leads a seemingly average life – an organ player in the local church, happily married to Debbie (Leslie Mann), and a member of the local police force. That is until he has a severe car accident that leads him to the ultimate epiphany: he’s gay and he’s going to live life to the fullest – even if he has to break the law to do it. Taking on an extravagant lifestyle, Steven turns to cons and fraud to make ends meet and is eventually sent to the State Penitentiary where he meets the love of his life, a sensitive, soft-spoken man named Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor). His devotion to freeing Phillip from jail and building the perfect life together prompts him to attempt (and often succeed at) one impossible con after another. Told with an uncanny sense of humor and a lot of heart, “I Love You Phillip Morris” is an oddball tale of what can happen when the legal system, a daredevil spirit and undying love collide.

I understand the film has been having trouble getting released here in the US due to the graphic way the homosexual relationship between the male lead characters is portrayed in the film (or some such nonsense). After the jump, you can check out the NSFW red band trailer and see what all the hub-bub is about. Be warned, the trailer features imagery and language that are not suitable for viewing at work …

I believe this film has already been released outside of the US without incident but, well, America is not yet totally comfortable with these sorts of things. BUT, at last, the film is being released here in the US … I Love You Phillip Morris will open in theaters on December 3. I guess we’ll have to see how well it does at the box office. Does this look like a film that you would like to see?

It looks like its quirky and funny but a bit like a renter. A bit stupid that it should have trouble getting released over here. Lets face it most people know what they are getting themselves into when they choose to see a movie and if they aren’t comfortable with it they don’t see it. Don’t punish everyone else because of it.

  2. CBer572

I saw this movie over a year ago and it’s really fantastic. It’s a shame it’s having the trouble getting released that it is.

  3. Kendra

I’ll be seeing this for sure..Looks right up my alley! It’s so annoying that they have some pretty graphic sex scenes between men and women, but something like this is too much..Lame..

  4. Morgan

I think this movie looks awesome. Can’t wait for it to come out at the end of the year!

  5. Kristel

The film seems cute, judging by the trailer. Didn’t see anything that’s NSFW in it though. The film’s already been released over here in Europe but I haven’t gone to see it yet. I think I should – haven’t seen a romantic comedy in a while.

  6. periz

this actually looks cute. how is that to graphic? they have scenes like that with men and women all the time. also i enjoy the line where he says being gay is expensive haha. oh jim carrey

  7. CHASE

I hope condoms are associated with this movie. Because, if not, I think it’ll be a bad image. I mean, I haven’t seen the movie, but if he cheats on his wife with men and he doesn’t wear a condom, then, well… It’ll look bad. Cheating is bad no matter who does it, but not wearing protection while cheating and risking your partner STD’S and even AIDS is worse. This movie does look funny, but I don’t think I’ll pay to see it. Only if I get in for free or RedBox, but that’s about it.

  8. Vanessa

I want to see it now!! Thanks for sharing :)

  9. Duckie

Same as CBer572. Saw it over a year ago and really liked it. I can’t believe it still didn’t get released in the US. Shame.

  10. Jo

Haha, I went to see this aaaages ago here in the UK :) had no idea what it was about, but I found it hilarious and yet completely touching at the same time. Definitely worth seeing!

  11. Jo

Sorry, I mean I had no idea what it was about before I saw it!

  12. spitzi

Looks fine to me…but then again, I’m Canadian.

  13. Jessica

I saw this film a short while ago and I think the audiences here in the U.S. will like it. I found it to be a touching and humorous love story and the directing, crisp script, and acting of the two leads really made it work. I hope people will go see it- it’s not as dramatic as “Brokeback Mountain” or “Milk,” but it certainly has its own meaningul themes. Everyone should see it when it’s released!

  14. Gigi

I saw this film earlier this year in the UK and I have no idea what “homo” business is keeping it’s release off in the US. That is a lame excuse by movie studios who probably just feel that it will not make money in the US. The sexuality depicted is no worse than other gay American films and Jim Carrey is really incredible in it(and I am no fan),….

  15. Alicia

I didn’t think the movie was great, but it was funny and I’m glad I watched it. If it wasn’t based on a true story I wouldn’t have been able to believe any of it.

  16. zoe

i saw this here in the uk bout 4 or 5 months ago such a good film ! cant believe the states still havnt released it!did truely know the states could be that up tight still!!

  17. Eh, not a Jim Carrey fan and the plot line seems quirky fun.. not my style.

  18. erin

    looks good.
and ps. @chase, that was ridiculous.

  19. Shan

I will definitely go see this movie! I like the trailer, and when Jim Carrey plays something besides the crazy, funny guy, he always does a great job, even if the movie itself isn’t the greatest.

  20. Bryaden

I’m not going to say I’ve seen the movie already at a screening, and I’m also not going to say it had me laughing, crying, everything.

This film could win Oscars, and I’m not kidding. I’ve never liked Jim Carey in a role more then this one. IT’s astounding.

  21. Yada

I got this movie bootleg while overseas. I knew nothing about it and I was thinking “oh Phillip Morris like the cigarette company” boy was I wrong. I really enjoyed it, kinda like “Catch Me If You Can” except the main characters are gay. I usually hate Jim Carrey and he didn’t bother me at all. I would totally recommend this movie, it was actually really funny.

  22. Nathan

I watched this at a friend’s house and I hated it. I don’t know whether I just didn’t like the movie itself or Jim Carey in it. I haven’t like any of Jim Carey’s movies that didn’t have him portraying over-the-top crazy characters.

  23. Meg

    @CHASE: Wtf?

  24. Sara

    I want to see it.

  25. I too thought this was about cigarettes when I first heard about it. Was that christian bale getting fucked in the beginning?

  26. CHASE

@meg and @erin – What? I was just saying if he IS cheating on his wife (because it showed him with that guy) then I hope he used protection. I stated that cheating is horrible and that even if one does cheat and doesn’t wear protection, whether they’re straight, gay, or bisexual, they should AT LEAST wear protection (not that it makes cheating OK, but at least they’re not risking their permanent partners health). I haven’t seen the movie, so I don’t know if he cheats on his wife or not, but that’s where the whole condom issue surfaced in my opinion. I wasn’t being biased or discriminative… Is it really that hard to comprehend? I don’t think so…

  27. Laure75

Looks like a fun movie. Will watch!

  28. Amanda G

    This movie looks good!

  29. lfg

i will see anything with Ewan!!

  30. sinann

Thats ridiculous! It came out in Ireland aaaaaaaages ago without any problems! Its was a good film, Ewan McGregor was gas in it, so stupid for it to have problems being released in the US!
