Behold: The New Thor

Hammer time

Yesterday we got our first look at new concept art that shows what Chris Evans will look like as Captain America in the upcoming Marvel film Captain America: The First Avenger. Today we get to check out concept art that shows us what Chris Hemsworth will look like as Thor in that upcoming Marvel film of the same name:

What’s especially cool about these Thor images is it’s the first shot we’ve seen of the Norse god wielding his hammer, Mjolner. It’s cool that not only does the top of the hammer glow, but you’ll notice that the grip also emanates blue light. It’s also interesting to see the size of Mjolner in proportion to Thor’s body. Of course, it’s not the size of the hammer, but how you use it. How it’s used in Thor is probably leveling buildings and fighting Norse gods … Thor hits theaters on May 6, 2011. For those who don’t know, Thor is being directed by Kenneth Branagh (Hamlet). The film also stars Natalie Portman as love-interest Jane Foster, Anthony Hopkins as Thor’s papa, Odin, and Tom Hiddleston as Loki, the film’s villain. The film also stars Ray Stevenson (Punisher: War Zone), Tadanobu Asano (Mongol), and Joshua Dallas (The Descent: Part 2) as the Warriors Three; Idris Elba (The Wire) as Heimdall, Stellan Skarsgard (Angels & Demons) as Selvig, and Jaimie Alexander (Kyle XY) as Sif.

As you may recall, we already got to see an actual teaser photo of Hemsworth as Thor but this new concept art shows us what the whole costume will reportedly look like in the film. Personally, I think Thor‘s hammer Mjǫllnir looks a bit too small but, well, I guess maybe I’m just being a size queen about it. After the jump, check out another photo of the new Thor along with a photo of what the Thor logo is rumored to look like …

Now … these photos may look a wee bit cheesey but keep in mind, they are concept art. Based on the real photo we saw last month, I’d say this art is pretty representative of what Thor will look like in the flesh. I love it!!

And this is what the Thor logo will reportedly look like in movie promos:

Whether or not this is real or just a fan manipulation is anyone’s guess … but with all the genuine leaks that keep coming from these Marvel films, I wouldn’t be surprised at all of this is the real deal. So … what do y’all think of the new Thor? How does he compare with the new Captain America?

The Incredibles have ruined me for all superhero movies. When I saw this picture, the first thing I thought was “No capes!”

  2. theskinny

The first thing I thought was, when did Thor find the time to the Folsom Street festival and buy his new costume? I know it’s all about the hammer.. but plain black leather? Leave it to Hollywood to make comics reeeaaallllyyy boring.

  3. Kyleigh

My only recollection of Thor was the references to him in Adventures in Babysitting (ha ha), but I recall he did have a cape. I don’t like the pants or the long sleves, to me Thor needs to resemble a viking, and this version resembles a businessman! And where is his helmet???

  4. Lauren

Oh dear lord….this is just a world of no….I understand we’re dealing with the comic Thor (and kudos for no winged helmet) and not mythic Thor…but can’t we get him in something a little more Viking-esque?

  5. Bb

This frightens me. Maybe it’s just concept art and they will change it? :)

  6. Susie

Also he’s wearing Tom Cruise-style lifts. Not cool.

  7. nicole

@Lauren – i was thinking it needed more viking too.

  8. Lauren

Definatly….Vikings traditionally wore heavy wool garments and furs in wintertime and linens in the warmer months, as they did not have cotton (nor spandex lol). The men generally wore tunics with thick leggings or trousers underneath, usually with leather sown into the knees etc to make areas that get worn faster, last longer. They also wore a cloak in colder months and animal skin boots on their feet. As for armor…chainmail, and a simple leather or steel headpiece. I mean we don’t have to go back to the 9th century, but they could make more of an effort…

  9. Cat

    Thor does not wear pants!

  10. Adrian

Ya it looks like he got out of a meeting and forgot to change out of his business pants. I’m still excited to see the movie though!

  11. Rich

Only several days late on this news. Good thing everyone has basically thrown this site into an editorial only category, and an uneducated one at that.

  12. Selina

    @Rich, wow, cranky much?

  13. nicole

@Rich..umm its only like 2 days late. and i wouldnt even consider it late seeing as alot of other site still havent posted about it.

  14. rossy

At least the costume doesn’t have nipples – Remember one of the Batman costumes?

  15. Langley

To be fair to this costume.. it’s very similar to what he wears in the current Marvel universes. It looks pretty good to me! I’m much happier with him dressed like this than say, in a skirt of something that goes a little ‘too hard’ into mythology.

  16. Langley

    @Cat

Sorry, and not to get too ‘Comic-Book Guy’ on you, but Thor of the Marvel comics does not wear a skirt.. He has pretty much been an all pants guy, from his debut appearance to his debut on the Avengers. He loves the pants!

  17. Leslie

Ummmm…he looks like Tori Spelling’s husband. Ick.
