For some strange reason — which I cannot pinpoint — I was suddenly struck by the deep desire to re-watch episodes of the 80’s cartoon series Jem and the Holograms. I suppose this isn’t to much of a shock, considering that I’ve been watched old eps of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe lately but that is a “boy” show and Jem is a “girl” show. Even back in the 80’s, when Jem was on the air, I had no qualms at all about watching the show on a daily basis even if it was considered a “girl” show. To me, Jem was an animated version of MTV … and I couldn’t get enough:
I should clarify that I never had an interest in owning any of the dolls (not that there’s anything wrong with boys playing with dolls, considering I had a She-Ra doll among my vast collection of various action figure “boys” toys), for me it was about the music. I know, it sounds a bit lame but the music and music videos in the cartoon were the real draw for me. I had an uncanny ability to convince my female friends to give me the cassette tapes of Jem/Misfits songs that were packaged with the dolls. I LOVED those cassettes. The Jem tapes were white with pink stickers and the Misfits tapes were black with green writing. What you may not understand if you didn’t experience this phenomenon in the 80’s was that MTV and music videos were THE biggest thing. In the days before the vastness of the Internet, all we had to focus all of our free time on was MTV … Jem really zeroed in on that for kids. It’s no wonder I’m such a sucker for sugary pop music … it’s all Jem’s fault.
IN ANY EVENT, yeah … I’m kinda into wanting to revisit all of that again so … please don’t shoot me.
Tonight, I’m meeting up with Darion for a quick bite to eat and then it’s early to bed so I can early rise tomorrow and work before we fly off to NYC for a week. I hope the weather is fab in the Big Apple right now cuz I am loving the sun here in SoCal. Happy Weekend, y’all!0
