Truly Outrageous!

The TV Guide

For some strange reason — which I cannot pinpoint — I was suddenly struck by the deep desire to re-watch episodes of the 80′s cartoon series Jem and the Holograms. I suppose this isn’t to much of a shock, considering that I’ve been watched old eps of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe lately but that is a “boy” show and Jem is a “girl” show. Even back in the 80′s, when Jem was on the air, I had no qualms at all about watching the show on a daily basis even if it was considered a “girl” show. To me, Jem was an animated version of MTV … and I couldn’t get enough:

I should clarify that I never had an interest in owning any of the dolls (not that there’s anything wrong with boys playing with dolls, considering I had a She-Ra doll among my vast collection of various action figure “boys” toys), for me it was about the music. I know, it sounds a bit lame but the music and music videos in the cartoon were the real draw for me. I had an uncanny ability to convince my female friends to give me the cassette tapes of Jem/Misfits songs that were packaged with the dolls. I LOVED those cassettes. The Jem tapes were white with pink stickers and the Misfits tapes were black with green writing. What you may not understand if you didn’t experience this phenomenon in the 80′s was that MTV and music videos were THE biggest thing. In the days before the vastness of the Internet, all we had to focus all of our free time on was MTVJem really zeroed in on that for kids. It’s no wonder I’m such a sucker for sugary pop music … it’s all Jem‘s fault.

IN ANY EVENT, yeah … I’m kinda into wanting to revisit all of that again so … please don’t shoot me.

Tonight, I’m meeting up with Darion for a quick bite to eat and then it’s early to bed so I can early rise tomorrow and work before we fly off to NYC for a week. I hope the weather is fab in the Big Apple right now cuz I am loving the sun here in SoCal. Happy Weekend, y’all!

Jem was awesome- totally beat Barbie and the Rockers any day of the week.

  2. Trish

I think it’s great that you’re wanting to rewatch the old episodes. It was a great show that I have been thinking about lately. My sister and I loved Jem and the Holograms. My husband mentioned that he used to watch it too!

  3. Keely

I was a biiiiiit young when Jem and the Holograms was originally aired, but I adore it now. It’s incredibly cheesy, the writing leaves much to be desired, and the animation has many errors… but it’s just so -fun-. I have a box set of it, and I’ve been known to sketch the Holograms and Misfits on occasion.

And the music is quite addicting, yes.

  4. Meghan

Jem…wow what a flashback I just had. I remember my Jem doll with her pink blinking earrings!

  5. ausettofegypt

I was like that last week with She-Ra. Good ol u tube!

  6. Mr. Gyllenhaal

80′s cartoons are so much better than anything now a days and this was just one of them!! I feel bad for kids now a days…

  7. Brittany

    O.M.G…. Jem is TRULY OUTRAGEOUS!!!!
FYI- I’ve got the first two seasons on DVD!! Jealous??!

  8. Cristina_Isis

I remember when I was small I used to love watching Jem and I still do. Brings back memories. They just don’t make cartoons they way that they used to. 80′s cartoons are the best :)

  9. Cristina_Isis

@Brittany I’m definitely jealous ;) but I least I have some of the She-Ra cartoons on dvd to help me cope ;)

  10. Margie

I heard an ugly rumor that there was word of a live-action movie. Can anyone clarify this for me? I loved this show and miss it so much.

    Synergy FTW!

  11. Donoso

Haha! The cassett comment takes me back. I used to hold a tape recorder to the TV speaker and record those songs so I could listen to them over and over.

  12. Should be working

We are the Misfits. Our songs are better.
We are the Misfits. We’re gonna get her.
    Best lyrics ever!

  13. Todd

Thanks Trent. Now I can come out the closet on this too. I totally own these and watch all the time. So mad that they are not releasing the final Season 3 part 2 =(. As with you, I have the He-man and She-ra sets. We’ve turned finding Look-ee in She-ra into a drinking game ;)

  14. Manda

I had a Jem doll back then! Some things should stay in the 80′s though LOL

  15. La

I wanted to be Jem when I was younger, I loved the show! I had no idea they had season DVDs out now, I have to get them!!

  16. Jstar

I always wanted the star earrings…

  17. Heather

I’m so jealous that you have them to watch. I totally loved that show….
When she used to “change” with her star earrings!
Didn’t she say something like “synergy unite”. I don’t remember the words anymore but I know I used to yell ‘em w/her!

  18. PixiesBassline

Ha!!! Holy shizz, Trent! I forgot all about Jem and the Holograms! That was a cool little memory from the past. :)

  19. Joslyn

Loved that show! At the time, my initials were JEM, so I was all over it! Even though I was a little too mature to be sitting in front of the tv watching it, I always managed to watch it out of the corner of my eye when my sisters watched. Can you believe the wallpaper of my laptop RIGHT NOW has a photo of JEM and the Holograms? Creepy!

  20. Missy

I wish I had Jem on DVD. I mentioned Jem the other day to my best friend and she had no idea what I was talking about. I was utterly speechless. I wish I had the DVDs, so I could show her just how much she missed out on in her childhood.

  21. Kim

    @Heather
    Showtime Synergy!
lol I loved that show. I went as Jem for Halloween last year.

  22. Robin

@Margie: I was thinking I heard the same thing too.. I think if they had done a live action movie in the 80′s it would have been great. But I agree, it would be heinous to attempt one now. Call me selfish, but I don’t really want to see little kids playing with re-envisioned Jem dolls to coincide with a movie release. They already did a hack job on Strawberry Shortcake.

  23. Laura

I LOVE your blog! We must be near the same age because all your retro remembrances are so similar to mine. :)

I loved Jem when I was a kid. My BF and I would watch it every afternoon at her house.

  24. Rey

OMG. Trent – I used to be about 10 minutes late for school every day because Jem was on in the morning and I just had to watch it to the very end when I should have been on my way to school! I taped every song on my little cassette recorder and was/am totally obsessed with this truly creative show…the music videos were great and, as you say, totally captured the spirit of MTV and the 80′s in general. I always thought it was kind of riské the way there was kissing on an animated kids show too! Oh and my iTunes is full of Jem songs today ; ) (BTW don’t you think some of Lady GaGa’s make up looks were curiously similar to Aja’s and Jetta’s???)

  25. Roadwork

I used to record the songs on my little portable tape recorder then listen to the talpes later in my bedroom, The Misfits songs were the best!

  26. shannon

“Jem” is the epitome of my childhood in the 1980s! And it’s really weird looking back at it and seeing that all the fashions on that show are back in style in a big way.

  27. gant77

I watched em’ all last year on youtube. Along with the Wuzzles!

  28. dyna

You have put me in Such a fantastic mood, Trent! I LOVED this show. I had the cassettes, a Jem doll and Shayna doll (who had to live in their own world since they were so much larger than Barbies), earrings…

Though I loved Rio, I do think that Jerrica should have ditched him since he was two timing Jerrica with Jem. Don’t you think?

  29. i LOVED that show growing up. Had to get home from school on time otherwise i’d miss the intro, and the best part of the show was singing along with all the songs!!!

since everything 80s is suddenly new again, when are they gonna make a Jem movie?

  30. shannon

@Andrea: I’ve heard rumors about a possible movie and/or new cartoon series, but nothing more.

  31. Heather

I still want to be a part of the band! A rockin outfit at the twist of an earring!
    Showtime Synergy my peeps!
