Listen: Kelly Clarkson, ‘Wash, Rinse, Repeat’

Remember that bit of controversy last Summer when Kelly Clarkson got pissed that her song Already Gone, written by One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder, sounded an awful lot like Beyoncé‘s hit single Halo which was, coincidentally, also written by Ryan Tedder? As you may recall, Kelly was very vocal about how she believed that Tedder intentionally gave her essentially the same song that he had already given to Beyoncé … but with new lyrics. Well, it would seem that Kelly is still pissed off because a diss track titled Wash, Rinse, Repeat as leaked its way to the Internets and it seems to address the Tedder controversy in the lyrics:

Despite the fact that she has sounded off her outrage following the leak of her songs earlier last month, another never-before-heard material from Kelly Clarkson hits the web again. Titled “Wash, Rinse, Repeat”, the track reportedly carries lyrics which lash out at Ryan Tedder and her record label. The winner of “American Idol” season 1 is rumored to slam the frontman of OneRepublic for writing her a song called “Already Gone” which coincidentally sounds similar to another Ryan-penned track, Beyonce Knowles’ “Halo”. She sings, “Music from the past, from the present, well just last week / We will change a note and get away with it (wait and see) / Just when you think we’ve changed like an addict we sweep back in with a dose of reality.” In other lines, Kelly reportedly takes aim at her label’s bosses who at that time released the single without her consent. “I’ll be playin’ God and you can be my bitch / The only compromise is you get to pick which of these formula’s is your perfect fit .. Wash, rinse, repeat, why are you fighting it? / No, no no, don’t get crazy keep between those lines / Here’s what we have in mind, we’ve worked with everyone trust us and see / Wash, rinse and repeat,” so the lyrics read. Back in July 2009, Kelly Clarkson revealed her frustration after learning that her “Already Gone” has “similar elements” that Ryan Tedder used in Beyonce Knowles’ single. “No-one’s gonna be sittin’ at home, thinking ‘Man, Ryan Tedder gave Beyonce and Kelly the same track to write to.’ No, they’re just gonna be saying I ripped someone off. I called Ryan and said, ‘I don’t understand. Why would you do that?’,” she said back then. “In the end, they’re releasing it without my consent. It sucks, but it’s one of those things I have no control over.”

As I said last July when I blogged about this controversy when it happened, I totally hear the similarity between the two songs and I am totally on Team Kelly. I LOVE that she took her frustration out in song … it’s just a shame that this diss track won’t get the attention it truly deserves. Kelly is amazing. She is so crazy talented, I just love her. This song rules … I love it entirely. I don’t think it’s going to win her favor from her record company bosses (and I imagine Ryan Tedder ain’t gonna be a fan of this track) but KC is sticking to her guns and I can’t help but respect her for it. You go, Kelly!!

KELLLLLLLYYY!! Trent, I am SOOO happy that you’re just as much of a Kelly fan as I am. I heart oh soooooo much! She’s so wonderful. WONDERFUL WONDERFUL WONDERFUL :)

  • Manda

While I agree with her frustration and anger, I think it also should be noted that Already Gone was still a big hit for her lol

  • nicole

    Bleeding Love-Halo-Already Gone.
all sounded the same with the drum beat. Atleast they were all hits for those artist lol.
but im liking this song. i’ve been waiting for some new Kc

  • krissy

I really like Kelly! I had never downloaded one of her cds before, but I got the last one and it blew me away. There were so many songs that I REALLY liked. I was completely surprised (and thankful that my friend nagged me to check it out).

  • Kristin

This song is awesome! Trent, I agreed I could totally hear the similarity in the songs, too. I was always having to guess which one I was about to hear on the radio whenever the song started. Man….everyone should just jump on Team KC and start requesting this song on the radios whether the record company likes it or not….I mean they’re not the ones in charge, THE AUDIENCE IS! We’re the ones who make these songs chart toppers by buying the records and requesting the songs on the radios, right?? I’m gonna start asking for this one to be played. I LOVE IT!

OHHHH do I have a lot to say on this situation!

Basically, more drama started with Kelly’s leak of “Cleopatra”. Several of us (us being fans) were not aware that the clip was indeed stolen (which we later learned) and figured it was one of those song clips that was actually meant to be heard, similar to where Amazon and other sites have 30 second previews of songs, so we (myself and a few others) uploaded the “Cleopatra” clip to our YouTube accounts. WELL, word spread to Kelly’s bandmates who took to Twitter and other outlets saying that the song was stolen by a DJ/Producer in Germany, and I (I don’t know about everyone else) immediately removed the clip from my account. And, as everyone saw, Kelly tweeted up a storm about it as well. She was angry, and rightfully so.

I don’t even really know what happened between then and now to get certain fanbases so angry, except to say that someone over on the KCE (Kelly Clarkson Express) decided to tell Aben Eubanks (one of Kelly’s guitarists) that I am responsible for the song leaks, and you know when the KCE says “Jump”, Kelly’s band members basically say “How high?” They listen to anything and everything that group does. Considering I am only 1 of 3 people with all the VIP pre-show live stuff uploaded on youtube at I guess Aben decided to take their word for it and then decided to tweet me about the “stolen songs” and also asked me to remove the “preshow material”, which I have had uploaded to YouTube since December without much of any problems. Aben basically went on a Twitter tirade, accusing me of “fucking with Kelly and DJ Ric” A) due to the KC firing her guitarist video that I also have uploaded as well as the fact that some people have blamed DJ Ric to have helped with the song leaks, and again the crazies decided to point the finger at me and a couple of others for that.

Around the same time Aben was tweeting me, Jason Halbert (Kelly’s musical director) decided to join in on the fun by making a hashtag saying #annechantalwearsmeout, mocked me, mocked the situation, and even Kelly’s other band members took part.

Ashley Arrison, Aben’s fiance (who Aben confirmed was actually her as I didn’t believe it at first) was even e-mailing me. I’m still not sure how she got my e-mail address, but she was either A) Actually being genuine, or B) BS’ing me, because everything she was saying was pretty much going against/the total opposite of what Kelly’s band members, Aben and Jason, were saying.

Safe to say, I felt attacked…all because a particular (small) group of people from the KCE wanted to play the blame game…and I’m still not quite sure what I was even being attacked for. Kelly’s band had even said they were not going to get involved in this “fan war” …yet five minutes later? They were involving themselves and from my point of view, being very immature about it. It’s since gone from the band mocking it, to fans pointing fingers at fans, to fans now making death threats against Kelly fans, creating fake blogs with fake information/slandering other Kelly fans, etc. On Twitter, one fan by the name of “kcfan2590″ stated they wanted to “teach me a lesson” and “finish me off” and from what I am told by other KCE members, there was a chat there last night dedicated to myself and other KC fans that they dislike, and they were making nothing but death threat after death threat after death threat, and apparently gave out my telephone number. How they even got ahold of THAT is beyond me.

So, in short? Kelly’s band is about as immature as her fans are, and it’s sad to see. I don’t think Kelly would necessarily like her fans sending other people death threats…but then again, I don’t think any of us thought Kelly would ever turn out to be this big of a bitch, so I wouldn’t be surprised if she actually condones this sort of behaviour.

Oh, and Aben has since made his twitter account PRIVATE which speaks volumes to me.

    Ummm wow, @AnneChantal. Wow…

  • Mr Jones

Trent, please ignore this annechantal person. She claims to be a Kelly Clarkson fan that’s trying to protect Kelly, but she posts messages like this at every blog that posts anything about Kelly Clarkson. This person has some kind of vendetta against Kelly Clarkson, her band, her fans, and anyone else that tries to protect and respect Kelly Clarkson’s privacy. Not only has she caused trouble within the KC community, but it’s a known fact she’s also notorious for spreading lies and false “insider” facts within the Twilight community. She’s done the same in the Britney Spears community as well. I’m not going to deny that I am a Kelly Clarkson fan, but I’m just an Idol fan altogether. So, of course I’m annoyed whenever I’m trying to read up on Idol and I see annechantal’s posts everywhere I go.
I’m positive she was waiting for you to post something about Kelly, and once you did, she went to work on her latest tyrade against Kelly. It seems like she has that entire post saved in Word and copies and pastes it wherever she goes. It’s unsure why she feels this way. All of her messages always mentions The Kelly Clarkson Express, one of Kelly’s biggest message boards, and it’s more obvious that all that annechantal is doing is trying to take down that particular forum. Kelly herself knows of “KCE” and appreciates it for what it is, but annechantal has got this strange notion in her head that Kelly and “KCE” are one in the same. I’m not too familiar with that forum, but they must have done something that really set annechantal off. Kelly’s band has blocked her from twitter because she creates multiple accounts and spams their twitters with tweets of hatred and disrespect. Of course they change their twitter accounts to private. Nobody ever wants to deal with that immaturity.
I can guarantee you that once annechantal is done reading my post, she will have a brand new post to defend herself. She does this everywhere. Watch out! Don’t say anything bad about her because she’ll threaten you with lawyers and spew nonsense about defamation of character. She will say that she’s being attacked by horrible Kelly Clarkson fans who are probably from “KCE”, but she’s so looney that she’s not even aware that she’s attacking Kelly Clarkson and the people she knows personally. People (very important people) are onto her antics and nobody is buying it. It’s much like Kelly’s song “Wash, Rinse, Repeat”. Annechantal works under the same formula that she just can’t seem to let go of.

  • aimie

@annechantal… so your a pap wanna be is that it?!?!? my guess would be the guy (based on the rant of kelly) likely made a motion to or at the audience (aka saying fu) and kelly wasn’t having that. and i don’t blame her i KNOW alot of people that have been to and take their kids to her shows… so why would she condone that.

team kelly too. already gone was better than halo. imo!

  • D

When someone else writes your material, you can’t always be sure they haven’t sold something similar to something else. Solution? Write your own music. Then again, many “artists” these days are nothing but glorified karaoke singers who couldn’t write their own material if their life depended on it. Not saying that is the case with KC, but still…

  • TMNox

What I don’t understand is how Kelly Clarkson can stand there and be pissed that someone was doing their job. Songwriting isn’t like working at Staples – it’s fucking hard. So, when a songwriter is in high demand, yes, they are going to do what they have to do to get the job done. Personally, I didn’t hear the similarities in the two songs. And – to be honest with you, I don’t give a damn and I’m sure there are a lot of people who don’t care, either. One is about breaking up and the other is a sappy love song. Kelly got the better one of the two, I think. The bitch should be grateful and thankful that she had a good song given to her in the first place, considering she couldn’t write a hit song if her life depended on it. She’s a corporate puppet until she can get herself out of it so she might as well keep her mouth shut until then. Pick up a guitar, Clarkson, and make it happen for yourself. Then, you won’t be so upset when one of your songs sounds like another one. It will be all your fault then.

    • @TMNox — Your argument isn’t really valid. Kelly wrote the lyrics to the song, her record company forced her to use Tedder’s music to make her album more “marketable”. She had no idea the same tune was given to Beyonce at the same time until after both albums came out. Kelly’s biggest hits are the ones that she wrote and she co-writes everything else. If all the pop stars out there right now, she is the least corporate puppet of them all.

  • gunnarjet

    … !

  • nicole

umm people theres a difference between writing songs & producing the music for it.

  • Maggie

I’m definitely a kelly clarkson fan this song loses all appeal because of the stupid autotune. Why would kelly clarkson hide her beautiful voice like that?!

  • Joanne

Every Ryan Tedder ‘touched’ song sounds the same. I can spot one within the first few seconds of hearing it! … This is why female singers go independent. There is no reason for Kelly C to be going through all this male induced, industry bs with her career. KC has the voice, song writing skills and fanbase to be doing her own thing.

  • Joanne

    @Maggie – I think the autotune is for irony…

  • Ashley

Am I the only one that doesn’t hear any similarities between Beyonce’s “halo” or Kelly’s “already gone”. There 2 different songs with different lyrics. There is a drum beat but they’re both used in different ways. There’s only a few different sounds a drum can make. Already gone was my favorite song off kelly’s album. I instantly like it when kelly’s album came out. I never really like “halo” or “single ladies” for that matter. I prefer “if I was a boy” or “sweet dreams. ” I’m a fan of both in fact I even saw Beyonce in concert and haven’t seen kelly yet.
Anyways my point is get out of the bitter barn and play in the hay already. It’s over. Beyonce song was more successful anyways

  • Alias

That’s the exact point, that Beyonce’s song did better and Kelly received all the negative comparisons because of Tedder’s shady dealings. Imagine if you created something only for it to be ripped off by another person, and to have everyone say you “copied” them because their creation was more successful and released earlier.

It’s not about being bitter, it’s about being disappointed with those around you. They should be looking out for her best interests, instead they’re making her seem like an artist who creates cheap imitations of other pop songs.

  • JR

I had heard the story was that Beyonce heard “Already Gone” and told Teddy she wants a song “like that”

  • TMNox

@Trent ….but she’s still being “forced” to use someone else’s music? That sounds a lot like corporate puppetry to me, no offense. She even says it herself, there isn’t much she can do about it. Because she recognizes this herself, she shouldn’t be complaining that one of her songs sounds like another song Tedder worked on (of which I don’t agree, anyway.) And why is Tedder to blame in all this? He’s a puppet, too. If there’s someone to blame, it’s the record companies. Blame them. And @Ashely, no you’re not the only one. I don’t hear the similarities at all. I think Kelly was just being a brat.

    • @TMNox — “but she’s still being “forced” to use someone else’s music? That sounds a lot like corporate puppetry to me” Yes, record companies hold a lot of control over their artists. If they don’t play nice and do what they are told, they are not allowed to release music … or fulfill their contracts. If they do not fulfill their contracts then they can’t leave and get other contracts. I contend that Tedder is to blame because he’s the one peddling the same song to different record companies and is getting paid for it.

  • Kelly really needs to let this go. Yes the two songs were similar…because they were by the same producer! Just like all Darkchild or So-So Def songs sound similar! Producers have signature sounds….a challenge to anyone who says they’re the same tho: make a mix of the two songs…the reason all said mixes suck on youtube is the songs ultimately are completely musically different. Different beat patterns, speeds, keys, and different instruments all together! Just because they use the same drum doesn’t make them the same song! Saying the two songs are the same is really just ignorant.
And coming from a big Kelly fan who voted for her on idol and supported her ever since this move is just screaming pettiness…I don’t know if it was written for her and recorded as a demo because her people convinced her to do so or what but it’s really struck me the wrong way and makes her seem ungrateful and childish about the whole situation! Ryan was responsible for most of her last album…..just a bad move…..terrible song! I’m disappointed in you Kelly!

  • Erin

Kelly is so lucky to be making tons of money doing something she loves. She seems kind of ungrateful to me. I like her music a lot but it seems like she is always picking fights–from Clive Davis to Taylor Swift’s record company, and now this. Her record company is responsible for much of her success.

  • Ben

I have to say that I am a pretty big fan of Kelly Clarkson, so much that I saw that she was going to be a judge for this competition called the International Songwriting Competition ( that I entered it and I am not even a musician. They have a lyrics only page and I just made some words up and sent them in hoping that Kelly will get to read them. Also, they said there is a $150,000 in prizes so that would be nice to win to. Can’t wait to watch Kelly on Unplugged coming up in November.
