‘The Karate Kid’ Redux Launches An Official Website
Yeah … it looks like this remake of The Karate Kid starring Jaden Pinkett-Smith and Jackie Chan is really gonna happen. We’ve seen the photos from the film set and yesterday we saw a new promo pic from the flick … today, we learn that Sony has put up an official website for the movie:

There’s even a countdown clock for the movie’s release date … cuz who knows how many folks out there are actually counting down the days ’til the movie’s release date. In addition to the new promo photo released yesterday by People, Empire magazine releases a bunch more photos from the flick. After the jump, check ‘em out …

Can it ever hope to live up to the standards of the original? Can we even dream that The Karate Kid do-over will crane-kick us in the head the way that first film did? And can Jaden “son of Will” Smith fill Ralph Macchio’s shoes? Well, here’s a step to answering these important questions: the first official stills from the film. Here we see Jaden as “Dre”, the son of a single mother (Taraji P. Henson, we’re guessing) who has to relocate to China when his mother’s job forces her to move there. Lonely at first, he meets Mr Han (Jackie Chan) who teaches him karate and becomes an unlikely friend via the medium of waxing on and waxing off. Then, we’re saying, he ends up crane-kicking the local bully into the middle of next week. The Karate Kid is out here on June 11, 2010, so you’ve got plenty of time to practice catching flies with chopsticks between now and then.
Nope, I’m still not sold on this remake … but I gotta say, I’m very impressed with Jaden’s ability to look like a karate kid. That high kick above is insane. He might be able to pull this off … but, again, there’s no way this new Karate Kid will be able to surpass the original Karate Kid. No way.

What happened to The Kung Fu Kid? Jackie Chan does Kung Fu. Karate is Japanese. Barf. Also he just seems way too young! Although that high kick is definitely amazing.

I heard that Jaden trained 4 months to learn all the karate moves. I enjoyed his role in Pursuit of Happyness and look forward to seeing him in this remake of a classic flick.

That high kick is amazing!!!! I was one of those people who was horrified when I learned of this remake…but now that I know that they aren’t doing the same setting (more like just the theme of the original), I think I am ok with it. Now that you have Krissy’s opinion, it is ok to resume production on the film. ;)

As a martial artist myself, I know that there has been an obvious amount of dedication to training by Jaden to accomplish a kick like that. Therefore, I say that if he is willing to put in the time and sweat to make sure his martial arts is up to snuff then I will be willing to give him a chance.

@CHASE – Hahahaa! Seriously! To be honest, I think the Pinkett-Smith duo is totally obnoxious..I don’t know if I could get behind one of their kids..I know that’s not fair, but this movie sounds lame anyways..No matter who is involved!

P.S. I will totally admit that his high kick is super impressive!

@Teesha – taekwondo is Korean, not Japanese… and karate is Japanese, not the ‘Americanized version’ of taekwondo. Don’t know where you’re getting your facts from.

I don’t think what Will Smith and Jada are doing with the kids is right.

Teesha says:

Response: Um no …. no a million times over. Taekwondo was invented in 1955 in Korea. Karate was invented in Okinawa in the 17th century and brought to japan in the early 20th century. Kung Fu, what this version of the movie was supposed to be based on was “invented” around 500 AD when Ta Mo brought it from India.
