Yesterday was a very nice, very quiet Xmas Day for me. I spent a lot of time reading — books, old journals, etc. — and really reconnecting with myself. I dunno, something about Xmas resonated with me this year to get back to my roots and refocus my energies. I spent some time with old books of mine that explain and reminded me of traditional Pagan Yule celebrations … ’twas a very nice day, I must say.

Last night, I met up with my friends David, Adriana and Etay for a showing of Sherlock Holmes:

I am SO happy to report that I loved the film. I fear that staunch Holmes fans (of the novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) may not take too kindly to the “modern” feel of the movie but I loved it entirely. Robert Downey, Jr. is a delight to watch on screen and his interplay with Jude Law as Dr. John Watson is so fun. To be honest, it’s hard NOT to see the manlove between these two characters … and the chemistry between RDJ and Jude does much to fortify that love. The story is really good and the direction, I must confess, wasn’t half bad. The only think I didn’t really care for was how Rachel McAdams‘s character Irene Adler was shoved into the storyline. She was fine as Adler but the character just felt imposed upon the story. There is a lot of action, lots of fast pace and great acting. Also, watch closely for a quick cameo by Guy Ritchie and Madonna‘s eldest son Rocco John. Everyone in our party really enjoyed ourselves immensely. I think you will either love this film or hate it … I am deffo on the love side :)

I have to give a shout-out to Pink reader Jennifer who, as luck would have it, I was seated next to at the movies. It was my pleasure meeting you … and btw, she loved the film too :)

I’m gonna get in some more reading today … I’ve been on a roll and I’ve been LOVING it. David arrives tomorrow morning so I’m excited for his return home. Happy Boxing and First Day of Kwanzaa, y’all!!

I watched it Christmas night and really enjoyed it! I really liked how they slowed down some action scenes (like fights) and talked it through before the actual scene. Great movie!

It was snoozewothy, was so disappointed. RDJ is hilarious and many hilarious undertones, but as a whole, not my piece of cake.

I’m still not interested for this movie and I’ve read some Sherlock Homes. Was the joke, “No shit, Sherlock” in the movie?

  4. I’d have to wait until 2nd of Jan to see this. Stupid local film fest :(

There were a lot of good ideas put to use, but they didn’t work together at all. Major yawnfest, I usually love RDJ, but this wasn’t even that funny.

I really enjoyed this movie:) RDJ and Jude Law were fantastic, heck i even thought Rachel McAdams was pretty great. My only issue was that occasionaly i found the dialouge hard to understand. They spoke very fast and the accents took a while to get 100% used to (and this is coming from a corrie street addict). Over all very entertaining. Could have been a little shorter though.

I completely agree; I really enjoyed Sherlock Holmes, but my one complaint has been Rachel McAdams/Irene. It was definitely the weakest part of the movie.

I actually thought about taking a nap-not because I was that tired, but just to make it go by faster. Yawn…..

thanks for the link to the pagan yule celebration information, trent! it’s important for people to remember that december 23-25 was not originally celebrated for jesus’ birth (which, if he actually existed, would historically have been in the spring anyways), but for the winter solstice and the promise of a new year…
i know i’m opinionated sometimes but this is a good reminder as to why i come to your website for info instead of others – you’re fair and balanced and informed… thank you!

Just saw Sherlock today and I loved it! Loved the chemistry between Robert and Jude.
