Terrorist Attack Averted In Detroit, MI
Passengers subdue would-be terrorist attempting to blow up an airplane

Scary news to pass along today … in what could’ve been a terribly tragic incident on Xmas Day yesterday, I am happy to report that passengers on Northwest Flight 253 managed to foil an attempted terrorist attack on the plane as it was about to land in Detroit, MI from Amsterdam. Initially, the report was that someone ignited firecrackers on board the plane but as more information came to light, it has been determined that a man originating from Nigeria, named Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, attempted to denote an “explosive device” in a terrorist attempt to blow up the plane. CNN has a blurred out photo of the man being taken into custody and some deets about how passengers on the plane foiled the attempt:

A Nigerian man is “talking a lot” to the FBI, said a senior U.S. official, after what the United States believes was an attempted terrorist attack on an inbound international flight. The initial impression is that the suspect was acting alone and did not have any formal connections to organized terrorist groups, said the official, who is familiar with the investigation. The suspect, identified by a U.S. government official as 23-year-old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, ignited a small explosive device Friday, shortly before a Northwest flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, landed at Detroit Metro Airport in Michigan. Passenger Jasper Schuringa told CNN that with the aid of the cabin crew, he helped subdue and isolate Abdulmutallab. Abdulmutallab was taken into custody and is being treated for second- and third-degree burns on his thighs, according to federal law enforcement and airline security sources. The sources told CNN that the suspect flew into Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam on a KLM flight from Lagos, Nigeria, and is not believed to be on any “no fly” list, although his name does appear in a U.S. database of people with suspect connections. He did not undergo secondary security screening in Amsterdam, an administration official said. The administration official said there was no evidence that Abdulmutallab was a hard-core, trained member of al-Qaeda. The Nigerian national, however, claimed to have extremist ties and said the explosive device “was acquired in Yemen along with instructions as to when it should be used,” a federal security bulletin obtained by CNN said … The remains of the device used are being sent to an FBI explosives lab in Quantico, Virginia, for analysis, security sources said … The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement Friday saying that air passengers “may notice additional screening measures put into place to ensure the safety of the traveling public on domestic and international flights.” Passengers described the brief moments of panic on board, as screams erupted and flight attendants ran for fire extinguishers. Syed Jafry, who was sitting in seat 16G, said the plane was just beginning to descend when passengers heard a pop. “Everybody got a little bit startled,” he said. “After a few seconds or so … there was … kind of a flamish light and there was fire” and people around the immediate area began to panic. Jasper Schuringa said he heard a big bang that sounded like a firecracker going off. He told CNN that he was the one who was able to subdue Abdulmutallab. CNN was not able to independently confirm Schuringa’s account. Schuringa said someone started yelling: “Fire! Fire!” Then there was smoke. That’s when Schuringa said he knew something was terribly wrong. When he noticed that Abdulmutallab was not moving, he grew suspect. He jumped over the passenger next to him and lunged over Abdulmutallab’s seat. Schuringa said he saw that Abdulmutallab had his pants open and he was holding a burning object between his legs. “I pulled the object from him and tried to extinguish the fire with my hands and threw it away,” Schuringa said. He said he managed to pull an object tucked between Abdulmutallab’s legs. “Water! Water,” Schuringa screamed. He heard fire extinguishers as he pulled Abdulmutallab out of his seat and dragged him to the front of the plane. Schuringa said Abdulmutallab seemed dazed. “He was staring into nothing.” Schuringa said he stripped off Abdulmutallab’s clothes to make sure he did not have other explosives on his body. A crew member helped handcuff him. He said other passengers applauded as he walked back to his own seat. “My hands are pretty burned. I am fine,” he said. “I am shaken up. I am happy to be here.” Jafry said the incident was under control within minutes, crediting the crew and nearby passengers for the rapid response … No other suspicious materials were found on the plane or in luggage, the law enforcement and airline security sources said. The suspect had only carry-on luggage … The plane, an Airbus 330, landed shortly before noon. It was carrying 278 passengers.

Unbelievable. If anything, this is a reminder that terrorists are still very much out there, active and waiting to launch another successful attack. This incident could’ve been horribly tragic, much thanks goes out to the brave passengers of NW Flight 253 and Misters Jafry & Schuringa in particular. Their quick thinking quite possibly saved the lives of almost 300 people. I can’t even tell you how scary this news is to me … my parents live just a city away from Detroit Metro Airport where this incident took place. Thank goodness no one was seriously injured and this incident turned out the way it did. As a result of this attempted attack, I’m sure security measures at airports around the country will be stepped up … meaning that many people are bound to complain about the added inconvenience. I, for one, am thankful and glad that all we really have to “pay” in return for a foiled terrorist attempt to blow up an airplane on US soil is a little added inconvenience at the airport.

Apparently, some of the security measures are that there’s to be no TV on over the USA, no one can get up in the last hour of the flight, and no access to personal belongings.

That may just be for the one airline that I read about but I’m sure it’s going to be similar all over.

  2. Lauri says:

Annoying or not, apparently security needs to be beefed up again, and I am more than ok with it.

Thank you for so throughly posting news that matters, in addition to the news that’s entertaining Trent!!

  3. Lisa says:

Was ths Schuringa guy a passenger or air marshall? The article is confusing and never uses his first name.

  4. Lisa says:

Oh sorry, I missed it, it says passenger Jasper Schuringa – but I wonder if he was an air marshall?

  5. Dayna says:

Man that is really scarry. It’s christmas time, so you’d never think anything bad could to you, but somethings dont take a holiday.

I’m just thankful that everyone is alright

  6. Sarah says:

From what I’ve read, those who stopped the man were just passengers on the plane. No air marshalls, nothing. I can’t imagine what our world and lives would be like if these brave people didn’t stop the guy.

  7. CHASE says:

This just means airport security will have to be even more tightened. I have never been on an airplane before. Sad, I know but the idea totally freaks me out.

  8. Alicia says:

That’s just plain scary, I flew back home yesterday from Washington back to Cali and it was my first time on a plane too, this just makes me freak out a little bit more.

  9. CHASE: Security checks are annoying but yeah, they need to be tightened. But you should really ride a plane once in your lifetime ;-)

Wow, my brother is a mechanic at Detroit Metro. Thank goodness for those passengers stopping that psycho. That is SO scary!

  11. patches says:

people whine and cry about some of the new xray machines that can see through your clothing and see all your nasty nakedness at airport security checks, but if they would have had these in effect at that airport then this could have been avoided.

  12. Krissy says:

I agree, Patches. I think those x-ray machines are greatly needed. Someone told me that they had forgotten to take their lighter out of their bag a few times when flying, and have never gotten stopped by security. That is pretty scary! I don’t think it would be a bad thing if every passenger and bag was sniffed by explosive expert dogs. I also think that this guy, much like the “shoe bomber”, seems like a pretty dim bulb. I can’t believe he wasn’t rescreened in Amsterdam. Anyone coming into our borders should be subjected to our standards.

  13. Anna says:

I don’t really believe he wasn’t rescreened in Amsterdam. Everyone always get rescreened there. But if he has the liquid in a bottle on his leg and nothing else metal on him no metal detector will catch him.

It seems like this guy was pretty stupid and what he was carrying obviously could not explode the plane.

Just think of the millions of planes taking off every day all over the world and there are hardly any incidents. Being in a car is still a lot more dangerous than being on a plane.

  14. Masher says:

With all of the bar code technology and magnetic stripe technology that is out there now, why don’t the airports demand that the airlines utilize a common code system and at the time of check-in, the ticket agent can code on the ticket any suspicious behavior or how many bags checked and how many carry-ons etc. When a passenger goes through security, their ticket is scanned and a secondary search can be conducted if the passenger, for example, has not checked any bags for an overseas flight. The last time I flied, I just had to show my ticket to security and it wasn’t scanned. You would think the ticket agents would be the first line of security for any suspicious behavior.

  15. Unbelievable? Loool I find it damn funny how everyone is so surprised by it!
I went to NYC in October and on the DELTA flight from JFK to Berlin I accidentially carried a coca cola bottle with me – no one even bothered to tell me to take it out. And that bottle was open!
So it’s not that surprising at all.

  16. DJWhoop says:

Who needs air marshalls when there are guys like him on board? It’s too bad they didn’t beat the ever loving shit outta that guy. He’d still be in the hospital.

  17. Sarah says:

This wasn’t in his luggage though, this was a plastic explosive sewn into his underwear, which is why it didn’t set off metal detectors. Watching CNN, they said it was the same type of explosive as that used by the shoe bomber, just in a different location.

  18. emily says:

Holy Crap this is scary. I have to get on a plane in march and now I am even more terrified!!!

  19. John d says:

Jasper was a Marshall, the system does work!
