Prodigal
Last night David and I spent a nice night out running around enjoying the quiet weekend. We decided to see the new film Brothers which stars Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal:

I am happy to report that Brothers is really a great film. I understand it is an American remake of a 2005 Danish film titled Brødre that is loosely based on the parable of The Prodigal Son in the Bible. Tobey Maguire delivers an insanely powerful performance in this film and, to my great pleasure, so do Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal. I should also mention that the little scene-stealers, Taylor Geare and Bailee Madison (who play daughters to Tobey and Natalie’s characters), were phenomenal as well. The movie is really emotional and the drama gets extremely complicated but over all it works. It felt like a play to me but, again, the story works well on the big screen. I am SO anxious to see the original Danish film … I hear that it is a fantastic film. Brothers is not light-hearted fare but I think it is deffo worth your time … I think you’ll be as impressed as I was with the caliber of performances by the lead actors.
Before we made our way to the late-showing of Brothers, David and I grabbed a bite to eat at Outback steakhouse and enjoyed dessert at Krispy Kreme. If you are so inclined, I have some food porn photos of our adventure to share after the jump …

Yeah … I realize it looks kinda gross … but, man, this shizz is GOOOOOD! As are the Krispy Kremes … which we got to see go thru the entire creation process:

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. So awesome.
So, yep, we basically had a great night of awesome eats and an awesome movie. The perfect Saturday night.

I, too, enjoyed ‘Brothers’, although I must say it is not for the weak-of-heart. My best friend, who went with me, told me that if I had not been there with her, she would have walked out of the theater. Some of the scenes are VERY intense and uncomfortable. But I would see it again. I hate to say I ‘enjoyed’ it when the subject is so serious, but I thought all the actors were remarkable.

They have closed so many Krispy Kreme places! The closest one to me is about 45 minutes away..Argh! My favies are the cream filled ones..They cream is so sugary and processed and gross, but ooohhhh so yummers!! And I think I felt an artery close up looking at those fries.. ;)

I loved Brothers too! The leads were all amazing. I just have to say that Natalie Portman could break my heart with a single look, and every time she was on screen, I couldn’t take my eyes off her. I would contend that she is the Audrey Hepburn of our time.

Trent, do you think Tobey’s performance is Oscar-worthy? I haven’t seen the film but I’ve heard wonders about his performance.

I thought the movie was fabulous. The performances were remarkable. I htink Tobey’s version of Sam is definitely Oscar worthy. The subject mater is intense but relevant and important. If you like Borthers you will also love Hurt Locker!!

I saw Brothers this weekend with my mom, aunt, and cousin, and when we all walked out of the theatre, we were just like “Wow.” It was such an incredible movie yet so sad because that is probably happening to some families in this world with a husband, brother, etc. in the war. We all thought that the girl who played the eldest daughter was so amazing, she deserves an Oscar nod or some sort of recognition.

The Danish version is great, definitely worth seeing. I’m slightly concerned from the previews that the remake Americanizes it too much but it looks good.

Trent, I think those fries were ranked the #1 unhealthiest food served at major restaurant chains. Bravo! You picked a winner and are truly a man after my own heart.
Brothers looks way too intense for me. I would definitely have to gorge myself on junk food to cheer myself up after such a downer movie.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Toby Maguire in the same movie? Wow, I guess that’s proof they’re not really the same person! I think I owe somebody $20. ;)

I’m glad to hear that others are impressed with Brothers, since it is not getting great reviews. I saw it this weekend and thought that it was extremely powerful movie with great performances. In my opinion, the oldest daughter was the standout, though. She absolutely broke my heart.

@bah — Funny you mention the eldest daughter cuz David and I LOVED the youngest daughter. Both girls were amazing.

Gah. When did Natalie Portman get old enough to start playing a mother?! (She and I are the same age; I guess this means I’m getting older, too.)

Trent, how on earth are you and David not 500 pounds? Y’all are always eating out, and eating super yummy things with a bazillion calories. So not fair!

@Lula — David is a faithful gym attendee, I am lucky to be blessed with a killer metabolism (that I pray will never give out)

yea it was a trip seeing Natalie play a mom for the 1st time … she really did it good tho. i thought she was very strong and her and the ‘daughters’ had a good natural chemistry.
