Natalie Portman Will Bring ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ To The Big Screen
"Now with Ultraviolent Zombie Mayhem!"

Yay!! Amazing new movie news to pass along today … Natalie Portman, one of my fave young actresses ever, is starring in and producing the big screen adaptation of the amazingly charming novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith. For those of you not in the know, Grahame-Smith amended Austen‘s classic novel Pride and Prejudice by adding zombies … which, to be honest, makes for an EXTREMELY entertaining read:

Given Natalie Portman’s elegant demeanor, a turn in a period Jane Austen adaptation was inevitable. Portman will star in and produce “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,” a film that is based on the bestselling book written by Seth Grahame-Smith and Austen. Lionsgate will finance and distribute. Quirk Books published the tome. Though Austen’s name is on the book, Grahame-Smith took the liberty of adding bloodthirsty flesh-eating zombies to the mix. Portman will produce through her handsomecharlie shingle with Annette Savitch, plus Darko Films’ Richard Kelly, Sean McKittrick and Ted Hamm. Described as an expanded version of the Austen classic, the book tells the timeless story of a woman’s quest for love and independence amid the outbreak of a deadly virus that turns the undead into vicious killers. Portman will play feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet, who is distracted from her quest to eradicate the zombie menace by the arrival of the arrogant Mr. Darcy. Darko just released “The Box,” “World’s Greatest Dad” and “I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell” … “Natalie and I are longtime passionate fans of Jane Austen’s books and this a fresh, fun and thought-provoking way to approach her work,” Savitch said. “The idea of zombies running rampant in 19th Century England may sound odd, but it lends a modern sense of urgency to a well known love story.”

This is great and totally unsurprising news. I read this book last April and loved it to pieces. I have never been a Jane Austen fan but I was very surprised how much I liked her work with the addition of a bunch of zombies ;) I can absolutely see Natalie Portman as Elizabeth Bennet: Zombie Killer … brilliant, brilliant idea. After the jump, check out a couple of FULL COLOR photos from the hard-cover edition of the book that give a bit of a feel for the fun story …

If you’ve not read this book, I highly suggest to you do so … it’s really very fun and is worth your time. Click HERE to purchase the paperback version or click HERE to purchase the deluxe hard cover, collector’s edition … then tell me how much you LOVE it :)

I am a HUGE JA fan.. but I have yet to read this book. I don’t want to tarnish my love for P&P…

But I’m hopeful for this movie if Natalie has signed on!

  2. Lauren says:

    hey trent!

what are your thoughts on reading this without reading pride and prejudice?! i’ve never read the original but have it on my kindle app waiting for me….but i’m more ridiculously more interested in reading the zombies version…what do you think?

  3. Siobhan! says:

    Trent,
Did you read Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters?
    Also incredible ;)

  4. roxster says:

whoa now……zombies running rampant is a “modern sense of urgency”? did i miss something? was there a zombie outbreak in addition to swine flu? what an odd statement. . .

  5. Mariah says:

Do you know Jane Austen was only 14 when she wrote Pride and Prejudice?? I found that out a few months ago. I find that to be unbelievably incredible.

  6. Molly says:

I’m excited that Natalie Portman is doing this film 1) because I LOVE her and 2) because she and Keira Knightley look so much alike and Keira did such a good job with Elizabeth Bennet in the 2005 version… I bet it’s going to be great!

  7. Bren says:

Natalie Portman is a million times prettier than Keira Knightley and isn’t so thin I feel a 1-800 number should be scrolling at the bottom of the screen asking for a donation, so YES!!! Just please make Mr. Darcy hot. Please.

  8. Lulu says:

@Bren.. Any thoughts on who should be Mr.D?? I’m trying to think of the perfect actor, and am coming up short. It’s kind of an Epic role… Perhaps an unknown would be best…

  9. Ava says:

I was a Pride and Prejudice zombie for Halloween – lots of fun! It was really fun when people “got it” without being told.

  10. Lisa says:

Jane Austen was not 14 when she wrote P&P, she was born in 1775 and began working on it in 1796 which would have made her around 21. I only made it about halfway through the zombie book, maybe I will try to pick it back up. I thought Siobhan was joking about the Sense & Sensibility and Sea Monsters! :)

  11. Darion says:

OMG!! This is gonna be amazing! I think it’s gonna be the new Kill Bill – well, after The Bride! ;) This is awesome!!!!

  12. Presh! says:

Am I the only one who thinks it’s kinda weird (but awesome) that Natalie is doing the zombie-fied version while Keira (who looks A LOT like Natalie) did the original version? Heehee! I just know that Natalie’s would be just as great! Can’t wait for this!!!!!! :3

  13. I love Austen and have yet to read the zombie-fied version…I might just get me a copy for Christmas.
