It’s Not Easy Being Green
The TV Guide

Yesterday was a pretty chilly, very wet day here in SoCal but I managed to brave the rain not once but twice for entertainment purposes. Yesterday afternoon I made my way out to the ArcLight Theater in Hollywood, CA for a matinee showing of the new Disney animated film The Princess and the Frog:

To my ecstatic glee, I am happy to report that Disney‘s return to 2D animation is a welcome one. The Princess and the Frog is full of Disney charm and magic and while there are a few probs with the story, IMHO, I loved the movie very much and heartily recommend it to everyone. It has been LONG overdue that Disney would feature a Black princess in one of their animated films … it was so wonderful to see Tiana and her family bring color to the Disney catalog of characters. I did find it ironic, tho, that Disney‘s first Black princess spends the majority of the film as a green frog (which isn’t a spoiler, this plot development is revealed in the film trailer). I also liked that Prince Naveen was a prince of color, hailing from the fictional country of Maldonia. The Antonio Banderes-ness of his accent made him Hispanic in my eyes. The Shadow Man villain was fun and I love all the color and magic that the New Orleans setting provided the story. I was not happy with Ray the toothless Cajun firefly character … he seemed a bit derogatory to me … but, wouldn’t you know it, he charmed me completely and I ended up really liking him (I just wish the animators gave him more than 3 teeth). My fave character, hands down, was Tiana‘s BFF Charlotte (she even had a Big Daddy a la Blanche Devereaux in Golden Girls). She was a really cute character. I have to say that the biggest disappointment for me were the songs, written by Randy Newman. I’m sorry but he sucks. None of the songs were memorable or catchy. I miss the days when Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin) wrote for Disney. The ending was a bit of a surprise, I won’t spoil but something happened that you don’t usually see in Disney films. Even with these tiny flaws, The Princess and the Frog is a great film to add to the Disney library of animated classics. I hope we get to see more 2D animated films very soon. 2D animation has been away for far too long.

Last night, I ventured out in the rain again to dance the night away with my friend Josh. After the jump, check out a couple of our fun pics from last night …

We had a blast … the music was mostly a’ight but we made sure to have fun no matter what was playing on the dancefloor. I hadn’t been out dancing in ages … ’twas a lot of fun.

Tonight, I’m meeting up with some friends for dinner and more at The Magic Castle! I’ve never been so I’m really looking forward to it. I know you cannot take photos there but I hope to have fun stories to share tomorrow.

“I’m sorry but he sucks.” Hahahaha! Hilarious!

I loved The Princess and the Frog! It was so adorable, and Tiana is possibly the best princess since Belle, regardless of race. I, too, adored Charlotte and even mentioned the Blanche Devereaux similarities. And I loved how beautiful the film actually was. I loved the fireflies. Ray’s little story line brought tears to my eyes. I’m so happy Disney is back. Oh, and I read somewhere that Disney is gonna be doing a version of Rapunzel in 2D with Mandy Moore as the voice and Alan Mencken doing the music. XD I’m glad Disney is back!!!!

  3. Hannah says:

I loved the movie. My favourite thing about the whole movie was the attention to detail and how beautiful everything was particularly the backgrounds. I agree the songs weren’t up to the Alan Menken days but I did like “Dig a little deeper” that was fun and catchy.

And Disney have had colour in their princesses for over 15 years now. Since the Little Mermaid technically there have been more non-white princesses than white. Which is great, people just seem to forget that.

  4. Rob says:

Soon as me and the boyfriend saw Charlotte in the 5min preview we saw we both looked at eachother and said ‘It’s Blanche!’ haha

  5. Rob says:

Also: Yeah Hannah; Mulan, Pocahontas, Jasmine, even heroines like Esmerelda and Lilo, all non-white. It is pretty cool they finally have a black princess though.

  6. Liza says:

I saw this movie over the weekend too and LOVED IT. I think Prince Naveen is the handsomest of the Disney Princes. LOL, if I had to choose one. And I thought Tiana was beautiful – even as a frog.
I didn’t mind the music – some of it was catchy but it was kind of uninspiring.

  7. Janelle says:

the fact that you mention alan menken and know his work makes me love you trent.

Thank you for mentioning the songs. They were the blandest sounding musical numbers ever. I kept waiting for that big number that Disney movies always have and it never really came. Not only that but there is no way any kid or grown up is going to remember the lyrics to those songs. Randy Newman does not write songs for kids, he writes for adults and that’s where he fails in these kids movies.

  9. Chela says:

We saw the Princess Frog today and I loved it. Adorable.

  10. schmee says:

Dig a little deeper was fun, but the rest of the music blew. He wrote the songs for Wall-e too, and those were a steaming pile of dog poop too.

  11. C says:

It’s funny that Disney is getting props on finally having an African America princess, and they still make the villain a very Black, evil voodoo priest.

  12. Cami says:

I saw it to and it was really good. I walked out with a big smile on my face. I loved it.
    I think Disney did it!

@C Eli “Big Daddy” La Bouff and his daughter cartoon character were white and they were not potrayed in the best light. Should white people get mad.
What about Tiana’s dad. Tiana had two parents-Tiana’s father was a black man with good moral value who stuck with his family until he died. Seldom do Hollywood allowed black families to have both parents.

Why can’t we celebrate this small step into the future.
The star was a black female. Tiana was a good person with great work ethics and moral values. She was able to teach others to improve their work ethics. I’m happy they finally portrayed a black female character in good light for a change and I don’t care if it was a cartoon. This could be the start of something good in Hollywood.

Black women are always at the lowest end of the totem pole in Hollywood and it’s about time for change.
It was a good movie. I’m happy about it.
I hope to add this DvD to my collection when it become available for sale. I would love for my kids to always have a copy of this movie.

  14. Sarah says:

Actually Disney has only had one princess of color before Tiana and that’s Jasmine. Pocahontas, Mulan, Lilo, etc are not princesses and are not featured at the Disneyland parks as heavily as the princesses. Personally Belle and Mulan are my favorite Disney ladies since they were so bad ass. I was not as impressed with the songs as I was with Alan Menken. BUT I did like the two Ray songs Ma Belle Evangeline and Gonna Take You There. I was a little put off by the character at first but his charm and songs won me over in the end.

  15. Nikki says:

I’m so glad that everyone likes Charlotte… I went to high school with the girl that does her voice!

  16. Denise says:

@C – Disney has had lots of white villains in past movies. So what if the one is this movie is black?

  17. Barb says:

    Great movie.

  18. Georjie says:

I loved this so much…i was a wee bit shocked that something happened to *blank*…that was a shocker! And yes, the songs sucked…they were not memorable at all! Kinda disappointed that Menken didn’t do the scores…apparently, he was doing Enchanted…

To reiterate…i loved it!!! I came out the movie theater smiling from ear to ear, heheh!

  19. Rob says:

Sarah – Disney class Mulan as a princess, she’s a Disney Princess. And Pocahontas counts too in the same way. They’re both on the Disney princess website. It’s so queer I know that. And no, Esmerelda and Lilo are not princesses, which is why I said ‘heroine.’

Also – why is it a problem that the villain is black? All the human Disney villains have been white in the past. Well, except for the green ones.

  20. A little late to the party, but just seen it and just loved it. Sure, some of the songs could be better, but overall, a big winner.
