Is ‘Valentine’s Day’ Ashamed Of Its Gayness?
Why does the trailer COMPLETELY omit the same-sex couple featured in the film?

Last week we got our first look at the first movie poster and first video trailer for the new film Valentine’s Day which seems to feature pretty much every actor in Hollywood and is scheduled for release on the week of February 14, 2010. At the time, I noted how cool it was to see so many cool actors featured in the film … including Bradley Cooper who, as it appeared in the trailer, was coupled up with Julia Roberts. It turns out that Bradley‘s character is actually gay and he is really coupled up with Eric Dane, who is not featured on the movie poster at all and is only briefly glimpsed in the trailer … nowhere near Bradley Cooper. Do you suppose the people trying to market Valentine’s Day are purposely omitting any information at all that reveals that there is a gay love story included in the film?

We’ve been keeping you updated on the star-studded movie Valentine’s Day since we first heard Bradley Cooper was playing a gay man in it. We had fun with the fantasy casting, and even though Hollywood didn’t take our advice, we weren’t complaining about them casting Grey’s Anatomy’s Eric Dane in the role of the closeted football player boyfriend. We weren’t thrilled about the teaser trailer when it came out, because it almost looked like Julia Roberts and Bradley were a couple, but we mostly laughed it off since it was a teaser. The full length trailer dropped over the weekend, and once again, Eric and Bradley don’t appear together in it. In fact, the picture above is as close as they get, which is consecutive frames in the trailer. Romantic, huh? Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift get more screen time in this two minute clip than our boys do, and they reportedly filmed their brief cameo in an afternoon – in fact, that should be all of their time in the movie. From this, you’d think they had equal billing to Julia though. Is it really impossible to market an ensemble romantic comedy to the masses with a gay couple in it? Could that really be considered a bad marketing move in Hollywood now? First, a gay director (Tom Ford) takes a movie about a gay man based on a book by a gay man and degays the marketing for that movie, and now this?

To be completely honest, I had NO idea that there was a gay couple included in this film. I, like pretty much everyone else not familiar with the screenplay, had no inkling of gayness in the film … not from any of the marketing materials. It seems very obvious to me that this is intentional. How do you put out a 2 minute trailer and show every couple in the movie and completely omit the only gay couple in the movie? Even more devious, the trailer makes it appear that Bradley Cooper (arguably the hottest actor in Hollywood right now, therefore a big box office draw) is coupled up with Julia Roberts (I made that very assumption when I blogged about the trailer’s release last week). Not only is this insulting to me but it also makes me angry. I honestly feel duped. Considering how the studio has decided to market this film, I’m not sure I’m at all interested in seeing it at all when it gets released in theaters. If they’re so ashamed to feature the only gay couple featured in the film (which makes no sense as to why they included them in the first place) then I might be too ashamed to go see the damn thing in theaters.

Well, that ending is ruined for me… I usually am one to think that previews shouldn’t give too much stuff away so that I’m still surprised at seeing the movie. Seems to me, in this case, it was deliberately left off with good reason.

I think this is one of the drawbacks of being so PC all of the time. We get more caught up in that stuff before really knowing WTF is going on…

    Oh well…

I think you are overreacting Trent…the movie has a twist at the end, just because it involves a gay couple doesn’t mean the studios are pulling a fast one. Stop being so sensitive.

  3. jackson says:

Sorry Trent, normally I agree with your views however on this subject I kinda feel you sometimes take things too personal when they are not a huge deal. It’s a twist ending, so it’s not advertised all over the trailer, calm the F down. Go get some eggnog :)

    • @jackson — What really baffles me is some people’s need to argue on behalf of a movie studio as if A.) they have a personal stake or B.) they know “what’s really going on”. Why are people so offended by my opinion on the matter? Does my “calming the F down” change anything either way? I’m quite calm and will continue to be so.

  4. esterhaman says:

Uh, you totally overreacted to some of the comments. I know it’s your blog and you have every right to your opinion, but at least admit when you overreact!

  5. Megan says:

Did you ever stop to think that maybe they wanted to keep it a surprise? Everyone would think that a big name like Bradley would be with Julia… but SURPRISE… he’s actually gay. Seems like a pretty cool plot twist to me.

You guys need to stop reacting. Not everyone is out to get gays. Gosh. So lame.

  6. esterhaman says:

Calm down Trent, geesh…having a bad day?

  7. esterhaman says:

Trent, good case of you overreacting: “the complete omission of any mention of the only gay couple seems pretty shitty to me. I find it humorous that you don’t see anything shady about such an omission in a TWO MINUTE trailer”

Helllooo…it was meant to be a suprise!!!

    • @esterhaman — I’m not sure why you feel I’m not calm, I can assure you … I am. Regarding this movie, you see no problem with it and I do. Life goes on, the world continues to turn. It’s no longer a film I choose to support, you are free to do so.

I’m sure it was intentional. It’s sad but there still continues to be discrimination against gays, and its just strange to me that they couldn’t see fit to add in a small scene with these two characters communicating. No one said they had to be kissing or flirting, they could just be talking! That’s what I don’t understand. But nevertheless, looks like a good movie. And the plot with Bradley and Eric will be cool to see. They’re both gorgeous.

  9. A says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if they were doing this. Although they may not have a problem with gay people (obviously not), sadly many members of the public do.

That said, a love story between Bradley Cooper and Eric Dane? DAMMMNNNN. I am watching.

  10. Jessica says:

Hmm. While I’m very disappointed that the promotional trailer does not feature the gay couple in the movie, I thought it could be possible that they wanted us to believe that bradley’s character was straight and then find out during the movie that he was gay? … Tough call.

  11. Danielle says:

it is sad indeed. i had two friends see a single man and one left not realizing it was a movie about a mans boyfriend dieing. i was kind of shocked when he said he couldn’t finish it. unbelievable. however, i am super stoked to watch a single man.

about valentines day… i do still want to see it but i find that the fact they couldn’t leave in a gay coupling is pathetic. :/

  12. Brayden says:

I think until I’ve seen the film, or read some reviews, and judge if the couple was meant to be a surprise I’ll hold back my opinion. If it does in fact turn out that it’s meant to be a plot twist, that’s still pretty bullshit, but I’d be a little less offended.

    But only a little.

And Trent, good on you for defending your position on this. I like a man with the balls to stand up to his detractors. Hopefully I’ll run into you sometime now that I live in LA!

  13. Addison says:

    @Trent

There is no need to patronize me. In no way did I say (or imply) that “it’s cute that gay relationships are treated like a surprise, trick ending meant to fool people into thinking they don’t exist and then SURPRISE there it is.” You took my comment and misconstrued it, just like this entire post has done with the preview. You say that “It would be far too obvious if in a movie about love that features a large cast of heterosexual relationships they decided to include a single gay relationship and treat it as normally as they would treat any of the hetero relationships without making it a gimmick. ” Well if you actually saw the movie first before making such comments you would see that that is in fact what they do with the gay relationship. The surprise is not that they’re gay, the surprise is to see who their significant other is. Eric Dane’s character who is a star NFL quaterback has a very powerful coming out scene which involves a televised press conference. There is nothing about that which is homophobic, in fact the other characters and press people treat this as “normal” as they do the hetero couples in the film. I don’t think in the real world the media/agents/publicists/etc. would be as accepting and nonjudgmental as they are in the film if, for instance, Tom Brady had a coming out press conference, do you?

The surprise scene when you find out the two are a couple is actually one of the best parts of the movie and the interaction between the two is very intimate and sweet, more than some of the straight couples in the film. It is far from a gimmick, as you call it. By leaving it out of the trailer, it makes their coupling all the more special.

Also for those that think the trailer shows Bradley Cooper and Julia Roberts as a couple, you find out immediately that is not the case because she is married and her husband is the topic of conversation. So, again, you can’t jump to conclusions based on a two minute trailer.

If you don’t want to see the movie after all of this then that is your prerogative, but by jumping to conclusions you have taken what was one of the best parts of the movie and turned it into something negative and degrading. It is ignorance like this that continues to breed homophobia in this world, when movies like this are actually taking steps forward to show that gay couples are as normal as straight couples.

  14. jus says:

pretty OT, but i have to say, eric dane is so freaking overrated. what is up with people thinking he’s so damn hot? eww.

  15. m says:

    I agree with Addison

  16. Katie says:

what you really should have complained about was the fact that they were the only couple who had no kiss! What, a stroke on the face and hair?
