Last night David and I made our way to the Cinemadome at the ArcLight Theater in Hollywood, CA to see The Wizard of Oz on the big screen. It was the first time that either of us were able to see the movie in a theater, just like audiences did 70 years ago when it was originally released. To say it was a magical experience would be an understatement:

All I kept thinking was how mind-blowing that movie must’ve been for movie-goers 70 years ago who were able to see a movie in COLOR for the first time. I’ve always loved how the movie starts out in black & white (well, sepia actually) and then EXPLODES into color when Dorothy lands in Oz. I cannot even imagine how spectacular that feat must’ve seemed when the movie was released originally. We had such a blast. I would always watch The Wizard of Oz on TV with my parents around Thanksgiving … but being able to see it in the Cinemadome was truly the best way to see this film. I also spent a lot of time thinking about the story from the musical Wicked while I watched the film last night. Both stories are so filled with magic and wonder … they will live on for all time. If any of y’all get the chance to see The Wizard of Oz on the big screen I urge you to do so … it’s a wonderful experience that you won’t soon forget.

After the movie, we made our way to The Abbey to meet up with Darion and his parents who are visiting SoCal for one night only. We snapped some photos — check ‘em out after the jump …

I love Darion’s parents so much … they are truly very special people. I’m so glad we were able to visit with them for a short while last night. We also got to see a bunch of friends we haven’t been able to see in a long time … it was just a fun night all around :)

Tonight, I believe we are meeting up with other friends for a hanging out session. It’s a bizzy but very happy week ;)

How fun! What a perfect movie to see on the big screen.

  4. Samantha says:

I saw the Wizard of Oz on the big screen when it came through Minneapolis with my mom and it was so much fun to see so many kids of all ages enjoying the film!

Also I love that you have been advertising the Go-Girl on your website….the creators are actually neighbors of mine. It’s fun to see MPLS products being advertised:)

My mom always used to make me watch the Wizard of Oz with her. It’s such a classic. If it ever gets a remake (which I hope it doesn’t!) I could totally see Anne Hathaway doing Dorthy.

Awwww so fun. I saw this in the movie theater in 1997 or 1998 with an ex boyfriend and loved it in huge format. He, however, fell asleep…not the only reason why he’s an ex. ;-)

Hate to burst your bubble. But when the movie was first release all those years ago, it was black and white the whole way thew. The color was added few years later.

    Still cool tho

I got to see a showing of it at the theatre here for my 8 or 9th birthday, it was awesome on the big screen. I had no idea that some of my friends wouldn’t have seen it and the Witch scared the crap of them, but I still loved it.

But um, to Steven, Wizard of Oz was filmed in Technicolor. As in, all the Oz scenes were in color. It wasn’t added later. Technicolor started in 1922, so I don’t know why they wouldn’t have used it for this.

love the friend of Dorothy reference trent ;-)

  10. Jess says:

Ohhh Trent…I LOVE the Wizard of Oz. It is my favorite movie of ALL TIME. I have had the poster above since I was 3…hanging framed on my wall :) I even wore ruby red slippers at my wedding in October, and came down the aisle to a violin solo of Somewhere Over the Rainbow…. <3

I love that 70 years later, the film still captivates people :)

  11. Julia says:

Growing up in the 50s and 60s, my dad only saw the movie on his family’s black and white TV. It wasn’t until college that he saw the color part, and freaked out about it to his roommates.

  12. Polly says:

@Steven Where did you hear that nonsense?

  13. Karla says:

Trent, if you ever get a chance, go to a Wizard of Oz Sing Along, it is the most fun! Imagine 500 voices singing Follw the Yellow Brick Road, awesome!
