Frances Bean Cobain Chooses To Live With Her Grandmother
No love for Courtney?

Yesterday we learned that Courtney Love was stripped of legal guardianship of her only begotten child, Frances Bean Cobain, but when we first heard of the development no real details as to the “why” were known. Today, People magazine is reporting that the matter of Frances‘s guardianship went before a judge because Frances herself has decided that she wants to live with her grandmother rather than with her mother Courtney Love. Apparently, the judge agreed and granted primary custody to Wendy O’Connor — mother of the late Kurt Cobain:

Courtney Love has lost legal control over her daughter, but it’s not because of a drug relapse as has been speculated, her lawyer tells PEOPLE. “Courtney’s been clean for years and is perfectly fine,” says her attorney Keith A. Fink. “This is simply about Frances preferring to live with her grandmother at this time.” On Friday, a judge appointed Kurt Cobain’s mother Wendy O’Connor and her daughter Kimberly Cobain as temporary legal guardians over Frances Bean. A hearing on the matter is set for Feb. 10. “Frances is 17 and a strong-willed child, and this is a decision she made on her own,” Fink adds. “No matter what, Courtney loves her daughter more than anything in the world.” This isn’t the first time O’Connor has been named guardian of Frances. In 2003, L.A. County officials removed Frances from her mother following the singer’s arrest for attempting to break into her ex-boyfriend’s home. O’Connor was given legal control over the girl. But Love regained custody in January 2005 after the singer proved to the court that she turned her life around and had kicked her drug habit. Last year, Frances told Harper’s Bazaar that O’Connor, who lives in Olympia, Wash., has been a constant force in her life. “She’s probably the person I respect most out of anybody in the world,” she told the magazine.

HMMMMM … interesting language by Courtney‘s lawyer, don’t you think? I find it very telling that he refers to Frances as a “strong-willed child” which is just nice talk for saying she’s a “brat”. While it remains to be seen if Frances is just being “strong-willed” or if she is just tired of dealing with C. Love’s craziness, it’s very clear that she has the utmost respect and admiration for her grandmother Wendy O’Connor. To be honest, based on Courtney‘s own public ramblings, I highly doubt Frances holds her own mother with the same regard. It occurred to me that a legal matter over guardianship of a 17 year old had to come down to either a matter of very seriousness or a matter of the wishes of the minor in question. Hearing that this change in legal guardianship came from a desire of Frances to live with her grandmother makes TOTAL sense. I wish her well … sounds like a very smart move on her part.

Fink says Courtney loves her with all her heart but even if that’s true, doesn’t mean she knows the right way. She seems too unstable.

    I do not blame her!!!

Wow, I never saw how truly beautiful Francis Bean is.

  4. Ama says:

Frances is really pretty, she has a beautiful skin tone. Anyways, It’s nice that she has someone stable in her life.

  5. Meghan says:

If I was Frances I would have run for the hills ages ago! It is very difficult living with an unstable parent. I have also read in past interviews with Frances that she is very close with her grandmother. Good for her.

Good for Frances. Time and time again, it’s been proven that children need structure! I think it’s very telling that age 17, when most kids are embracing freedom, she opts for a situation that provides her with more structure. It’s probably something she’s never gotten from Courtney.

  7. say whaaat? says:

just b/c they say ‘strong-willed’ does not = brat

    • @say whaaat? — I didn’t say that that’s what he was saying, I merely stated it was my interpretation of one lawyer’s choice of words. I don’t think she is a brat at all, but the lawyer of a mother who loses custody of her daughter because the child wants to leave her might regard her as a brat.

Oh, I also wanted to add: if her hair was blond in that pic, SO much like Kurt.

It seems like there is more to this story. If she simply wanted to live with her grandmother and nothing else was going on, why bring in lawyers and courts? Why not just allow her to live with her grandmother? I mean, we’re not talking about a twelve year old here, she’s nearly 18. It sounds to me like not only did they want to let her live with g-ma, but they want to prevent Courtney from doing anything about it (or having any more access to her daugher’s money).

does anyone else think this is happening 17 years too late? At this point, she could just emancipate herself from her mother.

  11. krib says:

@ sweet_lady- my thoughts exactly, why couldnt she just emancipate herself?

    • @krib @sweet_lady — Even at 17, Frances is prolly not ready to live on her own. I for sure was NOT ready to live on my own at 17. She loves and respects her grandmother, it makes total sense that she would want to live with her.

  12. Bee says:

Good for Frances, I cannot imagine living with that mess that is C. Love. I just… I can’t imagine it. It hurts my brain to even begin to imagine the bullshit this girl must have put up with. I’ll be that when C. Love makes those facebook/myspace rants, she rants worse in real life (although, it’s probably sliiiiiightly more coherent ’cause you can’t hear spelling mistakes).

  13. debho says:

OMG, I had to do a double take….Frances looks exactly like me when I was younger! Seriously, it’s very eerie.
I hope it turns out for her…she’s always seemed to have a level head on her young shoulders, considering her upbringing.

  14. Chivonne says:

She is so pretty. I can’t believe how gorgeous she is. I bet C. Love would have been just as pretty had she not done drugs and shit.

I’m friends with the guy that pierced FBC’s nose, (which happened a year or more ago) and he said when she and Courtney came into Prick’s, that Frances was basically calling all the shots (as if she was the adult and Courtney was the kid).
He said she was as super cool, mature and level headed as she seems to be… And that she refused to allow Courtney into the piercing room with her. (Courtney was basically a noisy irritant, demanding that no pictures were taken). She made Courtney wait in the lobby.(lol!) It sounded to me like Frances was the only one with any sense, within a circus of insanity.. (her mom).
I would surely think that this has something to do with money… but maybe even more just an escape from insanity?

  16. AnonYmously says:

By the way, as soon as they got in the piercing room, Frances immediately told my friend that he could take a picture of her if he wanted to. Lol

  17. erin says:

Maybe someone told Frances that her mother had her father killed because he was getting ready to divorce her and was in the process of updating his will so everything didn’t go to Courtney? Sorry, just a rumor!

Hopefully this kid gets the stability she needs from her grandmother. I think she only turned 17 fairly recently, so maybe another year with her wacko mother was more than she could take.

It’s eerie how much she looks like Kurt and always has.

  18. mimi says:

FBC seems like she’s got a good head on her shoulders. i like that she doesn’t seem to seek the spotlight too much, and clearly she’s not as big of a mess as courtney. good for her for choosing to live with her grandma!
