Exclusive: Julie Benz Talks About The Shocking Season 4 Finale Of ‘Dexter’
Pink is the new Interview

Early this morning I had the extreme fortune to interview the amazing Julie Benz about the events that transpired on the season 4 finale episode of Dexter which aired last Sunday:

Now, I realize that there still may be a few folks out there who have yet to see the finale ep (for various reasons) so in order to keep those people unspoiled I’ll keep the deets about our chat behind the cut. I’ve posted the full audio of our conversation so that you can listen in and hear Julie talk about that final scene that aired Sunday night, her thoughts on her character Rita Morgan overall, what the show and the finale episode mean to her personally and more. Check it out, after the jump …

As you can imagine, Julie Benz was a pleasure to chat with and I want to send out all of my love and thanks to her and to her publicist PJ for setting up our interview. As anyone who knows me is well aware, I’ve been a huge Julie Benz fan for years … her status as an eternal member of the Buffyverse means she is endeared to my heart forever. Her work on Dexter has only fortified that love and respect. I am quite confident that Julie will find a great project to work on next … I cannot wait to support and become a fan of her work on that project, whatever it may be.

  3. Alex says:

    LOVE JULIE BENZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Kendra says:

You are both so spot on about people grieving..I feel like I’ve lost someone I know! It’s horrible..What a great interview, Trent! She seems like such a sweet person..Just like Rita!! I loved that she said that she was a little irritated by some of the things they had her do this season, like not getting up in the middle of the night..That thought crossed my mind..Thanks for asking the question about the mood on set for the death scene!

Oh..And I totally cracked up when she was saying that she was kind of wooden in that scene! She’s adorable..

  5. Sarah says:

Great interview, Trent!!! You asked some really good questions… as a fan of Dexter, I really enjoyed some of the creative insight provided by Julie. She is very articulate and such a gifted artist and a will be missed on the show!

  6. Completely off topic: that is totally not how I expected your voice to sound Trent……dunno why….

  7. ausettofegypt says:

Oooo good questions Trent. Especially about Aster and Cody! I did wonder how the kids felt about it. I love the fact that the cast did not know the ending until the ending. The best is that there was no leaks, no clue how it would all pan out. I know that Dexter loves Rita, but I do agree, she was his most innocent, greatest victim. great Job at gettin’ the juice!

  8. Krist says:

Great question about Rita being Dexter’s greatest victim! The Code doesn’t allow him to kill an innocent person, but the most innocent person he was in contact with (aside from the children) was murdered violently as a side effect of her being nearest to him.

  9. Ania says:

Julie Benz is so sweet and adorable! She was one of the main reasons I started to watch Dexter and I’m so happy she was in it and did such a great job. I’ll really miss Rita! :( but now, I can’t wait to see her in a new character. Good Luck for everything Julie!!

  10. My wife and I were devestated regarding the loss of Rita. Of course it’s a character and not a real person, but when people invest so much time in all of those seasons, how can you not have feelings for the characters. Rita was so sweet. How could they kill the best thing and not …I don’t know, Quinn?

  11. Fan says:

We miss you all, Rita! Just the best for Julie Benz

  12. janelle says:

Thank you, Julie! You were so wonderful on Dexter. And great interview , Trent. I loved the questions.
I have a question for YOU, though! Do you think Trinity told her what he knew about Dexter? I think the most heart-wrenching shot was her hand on the tub , wearing her wedding ring.
SUCH a great, but tragic, ending.

  13. Rachael says:

I’m glad you and Julie touched on the subject of how hard Rita would have tried to fight off Trinity … instead of Trinity killing her … couldn’t the writers have had Rita fight him tooth and nail a la Patricia Arquette vs. James Gandolfini in True Romance, and have her end up killing him instead?? Hahaha that would have been a pretty awesome ending I think. I think I would have preferred that to them killing Rita off in such a horrific way … yikes that ending is still getting to me. I can’t decide whether I think it was a great twist, or whether I’m just pissed at them for abusing that character so much. :-P

Oh p.s. Trent this is the first time I’ve ever heard your voice. :)

  14. Timi says:

Julie! You did an amazing job! We will miss you. You are a very good actress. Thank you, Julie!

  15. Maria says:

Dexter is a great show but what first brought me to the show was Julie Benz. I met her in ’05 and she is sweeter in person than Rita was. Great work all around an as always, Julie was amazing.

  16. Tracy says:

I love Julie Benz, she is amazingly gorgeous and talented. And Trent your voice is sooooo adorable.

  17. Gena the Therapist says:

@Trent- Thanks for interviewing Julie Benz!!!

  18. Vanessa says:

I would first just like to say Julie Benz is an amazing actress!!!
Also, I am so relieved that Im not the only one grieving for Rita. I mean i seriously have moped around and cried for stupid songs that would remind me of Dexter and Rita’s relationship since Sunday night. I thought I was crazy because its just a tv show, But i have been a fan since the pilot episode in 2006. And I just fell in love with that character and thought as the show went on Rita would save Dexter from his “dark passenger” and it seemed as if it would have been true the way the season finale was heading until the very end……………absolutly heartbreaking.

  19. A says:

Awww, I love Julie Benz. She’s such an amazing actress. But she’ll always be Darla to me.

  20. Lilliah says:

I feel so dumb for reading ahead the other day- I just finished the 3rd season via netflix, since I don’t have tv, and when you posted about this I had one of those “but I just want to know!!” moments…soooooo dumb, I’ve gone and ruined the 4th season for myself, and now I won’t feel the shock and upset that you guys are feeling. Never doing that again.
