‘Dexter’ Season 4 Ends With A SHOCKING Final Twist
ATTENTION: SPOILER ALERT WARNING

Last night Showtime aired the season 4 finale of my #1 fave show Dexter and ended the season in such a shocking way that I was left literally speechless for a good 10 mins. after the ep had ended … and have been haunted by the final scene ever since. As a longtime fan of the show, I felt I was pretty prepared for any plot development the show had to offer … I was sorely wrong:

In order to NOT spoil the final twist in last night’s finale ep for those of you who have yet to see it, I’ll keep the reveal behind the cut. I will say, tho, that the writers and producers of Dexter truly outdid themselves and gave fans an ending that they won’t soon forget … I’m still thinking about it now. After the jump, find out what happened on the season 4 finale of Dexter

Okay … so … if you’re reading this then you either already watched the ep and are, most likely, still reeling from the ending or do not watch the show and are curious. All season long, Dexter Morgan — the serial killer with a heart of gold, married to the beautiful Rita (played by Julie Benz) with 3 children (including a 1ish year old baby) — has been dealing with the so-called Trinity Killer who has been described as the “most successful serial killer of all time”. In last night’s ep, Deb Morgan (Dexter‘s sister) discovered who Dexter‘s real mother is … Dexter finally caught and killed the Trinity Killer … but Trinity got the last, shocking laugh. In the final scene of the ep, it was discovered that Rita Morgan was murdered by Trinity before Dexter got the chance to kill him:

Rita‘s death hit me like a punch in the gut … it was something I was not anticipating and was not prepared for. I’ve always loved the Rita character … her death essentially kills the heart and soul of the show … and will, very likely, have an effect on Dexter‘s character that will change the course of the series. The revelation of Rita‘s death was on par with the surprising revelation that Dexter‘s brother was the Ice Truck Killer in season 1 … and was just as shocking as the discovery of “the head in the box” twist in the movie Se7en. People, I’m still reeling.

TV Guide spoke with Julie Benz (Rita) about her exit from the show, here is her interview:

Freshly diced Dexter beauty Julie Benz has two apologies for TV Guide Magazine. The first is for being a few minutes late to her official exit interview—something she understandably would rather have skipped. The second is for telling a little lie at our recent Hot List party: “You’re wrong!” she’d declared, when asked if her character, Rita Morgan, the eternally sunny wife of Showtime’s celebrated serial killer, was going to fall victim to John Lithgow’s Trinity Killer in the season finale. “I felt bad,” she confesses. “I even told you we shot multiple endings, which we did not.” No worries, Julie. We get it. As TV secrets go, this was a doozy, even though we had our suspicions way back at Comic-Con last July when Lithgow spilled to his new costars that he knew something so shocking about Season 4 even they would be floored. Did he actually know Benz’s fate way back then? “I’ve been told two different things,” says Benz, 37. “The producers and executives told me they didn’t know at the start of the season. But I’ve also been told that Lithgow did know.” As they were drawing near the finale, Benz’s costar David Zayas (Det. Angel Batista) clued her in that Rita may not be long for Dexter’s world. “There were rumblings that something major was going to happen,” says Benz. “I even asked the producers and they said, ‘We would never kill Rita.’” Then in late September, the day before the season finale script was to be distributed to the cast, the bomb dropped. “It was my day off, and I was called in for a meeting with the producers,” Benz recalls. “At that point, you pretty much know. It was a tough meeting. In a bizarre way, it felt like a scene from ‘Defending Your Life.’” Producers explained they wanted to shake up the structure of the show. It was becoming more difficult to sell Dexter as a tortured soul since his life was growing increasingly idyllic in the Miami suburbs with the perfect wife and children. In fact, just before murdering Trinity and discovering Rita’s corpse, Dexter vowed to end his killing spree—which also would have ended the show. But there’s nothing like discovering your wife’s body slumped in the bathtub with your baby boy crying in a pool of mommy’s blood to reboot your warped psyche. “It’s a very poetic mirror to how Dexter was found when he was 3,” says Benz, who, before her four-year run on Dexter, was a “WB girl” with parts on Roswell, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.

Entertainment Weekly spoke to Dexter executive producer Clyde Phillips about Rita‘s death, here is that interview:

When was the decision made to kill off Rita?
CLYDE PHILLIPS: I would say we made the decision pretty late in the season. We didn’t quite know what we were going to do [in the finale].

Why Rita?
PHILLIPS: The story evolved and it kind of became inevitable. We knew that we had to do more than kill Trinity. It’s a little bit of a corner that we paint ourselves into. Last year we tried to avoid that and actually I think we didn’t do as well as we could have. We killed off Jimmy Smits’ character [in the 11th episode] of 12 episodes and then we had to figure out what we were going to do in the 12th episode. This season, we knew that we were going to take Trinity out in the 12th episode and we think that the audience knew that, too. We had to raise the bar to as high as possible and then figure out what to do next year.

How did Julie Benz take the news that she was leaving the show?
PHILLIPS: She wasn’t happy. She loved being with us. We loved having her with us. She took it… professionally. She was greatly disappointed. She’s a professional. She works in television. She knew that this was a possibility.

Did Trinity tell Rita about Dexter before he killed her?
PHILLIPS: I don’t know the answer to that question. We haven’t talked about next season. But [my gut says] I would think that he did not tell her.

Might she return as a ghost like Dex’s dad?
PHILLIPS: The answer, at he moment, is no. However, had you asked me two years ago if Lundy was coming back I would’ve said no. We didn’t know he was coming back until this year. It just seemed expedient to the story — to Dexter’s story and to Deb’s story.

Some people thought the game-changing twist was going to involve Deb figuring out that Dexter is a serial killer. How much longer can you stretch out that story before you pay it off?
PHILLIPS: We’ve bounced that around the [writers] room. But once we do that… want to talk about game-changers? Once we do that, the game is changed in a way that we just don’t know how to anticipate just yet.

Will next season be about Dexter juggling serial killing and single fatherhood?
PHILLIPS: He is a single father. But, beyond that, we don’t know. We don’t know if there’s going to be what we call “a Big Bad,” like Jimmy Smiths and John Lithgow, or if it’s going to be more individual, stand-alone stories.

I understand you wrote two endings to throw people off. What was the other ending?
PHILLIPS: While Dexter was packing to leave, he saw on the television that a child murderer had just escaped from prison. Either escaped or fallen thru the cracks. So he’s thinking, “Do I join Rita on vacation or do I…” and then he looks towards the camera and he has this big decision.

That would’ve been disappointing.
PHILLIPS: [Laughs] Yeah. Compared to this? Are you kidding?

To be sure, I have not been affected by a TV show like this in quite some time. I don’t normally invest myself so fully in a show like this (I’ve had quite a Dexter year, I even dressed up as Dexter for Hallowe’en) so it may seem silly to have feelings for the death of a character but … Julie Benz and I go way back. I loved her as Darla on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel and, as I said, I always loved the Rita character on Dexter. She was always such a tragic figure … her entire “life” was full of suffering from the men in her life (her ex-husband Paul abused her on the show) … her marriage to Dexter eventually caused her her life. And so … I would like to formally extend a Peace the Spork Out to Rita Morgan:

May she rest in peace … but only until next season where hopefully she’ll come back on the show as a ghost the same way Dexter‘s father does!!! Any Dexter fans out there … what do y’all think about last night’s ep?

Ok, it rocked! I was so shocked! I loved Rita in the first season but she was really getting annoying. I didn’t expect them to kill her off though. Totally great twist.

  2. kristy says:

ok i just finished watching it and my heart is racing like it never has from a tv show before!! i caaaant believe that rita got killed! im sooo upset! :(

  3. Joon says:

I don’t remember feeling this moved by a TV show since “Friends” went off the air and I cried. I didn’t cry this time, but I sat there speechless. The scene was so eerie, it was hard to take – all the shots of Dex or someone else killing people doesn’t bother me but the shots from Season 1 of Dex as a boy being found in the storage container still haunt me. As a mom, that scene from last night will haunt me for a while. My first reaction was that I didn’t like it, not one bit, and I was sad. I know, it’s only a TV show, but this is one incredibly written show that I make sure to be home to see every Sunday night. It may not be pretty and may not make sense, but neither does life.

  4. AM says:

I am still thinking about it !! I loved this season , I wish they could air season 5 in spring , truly the writers of Dexter outdid himself , I cannot wait to see what’s next …..

Trent – I got into watching Dexter because of how much you rave about the show , We watch a new show every christmas , and two christmases ago was Dexter …. I loved the show from get go !!!

  5. Jamie says:

It was so shocking I needed to get some air. I thought I was going to throw up and even though it was because I ate a lot while watching this show, Rita’s death didn’t help.

She was naggy at times but after all she was a mother hen who was just caring for her family. She needed to make sure everyone ESPECIALLY the father in the picture were in on this and serious about this because it was important for the 3 kids. I always found her actions were pretty justified.

And she was what made him so human. She brought him towards the light. She made him realize that he could love, and now she’s gone.

I’m so SO sad. I can relate to all the comments above. I feel I lost someone I knew =(

  6. Jamie says:

Julie Benz we will miss you!!!!

  7. Jamie says:

    BTW

I think it’s a GREAT idea that they bring back Rita as a ghost as they did with Harry. I think if done right it could bring AMAZING dynamic to his internal dialogue. Harry will be the Code but she will be the human element.

I’m gonna suggest it on Showtime

  8. la princesa says:

Trent, I know now how to answer the “what do you want for Xmas” question. I want Dexter on DVD! You have me interested!!!

  9. Gena the Therapist says:

@Trent- Do you think the plot can be additionally developed past a 5th season? The show just lost its materal figure. Who could possible fill that important part that Dexter needs? I just don’t see Deb trading f-bombs for cartoons. Ideas anyone?

  10. Lola001 says:

OH MY GOD! I just finished watching the season finale and I’m in shock! I thought the same thing as some others when RIta’s phone was ringing – that Trinity had kidnapped her and now Dexter would have to try to find her a Harrison. Even when the baby started crying I thought it just just because he was left alone… then I saw the blood. I’m really going to miss Julie Benz on the show, she was great. And can I just say it again? OH MY GOD!

  11. Kristi says:

I think that just ruined my whole night. What an awesome season with a horrific ending! I’m in shock and hate that we have to wait until NEXT Sept!!! There’s just not enough Dexter :o(
I’ve been a Rita fan all along – and lo-v-v-v-ed when Dexter finally killed Lila. I loathed her.
All that said, I can completely appreciate why the writers offed Rita in order to change the direction of the show, but I will sure miss her.

  12. Brenna says:

I loved the Lila season. lol.

This season was really fantastic. Season 2 has long been my fave;I thought Season 3 was really weak. However, Season 4 has been fantastic.

Several friends have commented that Season 4 has seemed “less” to them. I think it was due to this season being all about Dexter’s internal conflict and angst about his life. I can’t wait to see what Season 5 will bring.

I have to give props to the actress who plays Debra. I have hated that character since Season One- found her really annoying. This season she was really great. I hope she gets some noms for this performance when award show time rolls around. She was excellent.

    • @Brenna — Jennifer Carpenter (who plays Deb Morgan and is married to Michael C. Hall in real life) is a FANTASTIC actress. She gave a great performance this year, hands down. Everytime she started to cry, I started to cry. I really hope the Emmy Awards reward this show … so many great performances and such great writing … Emmys at last, please!!

  13. Elena says:

The season finale was a whole mind screw. The writers did an excellent job. This season has been the best by far. I just wish we could get to season 5 in May than in September.

  14. Lisa says:

Am I alone in not being shocked by the ending? I LOVED it but I saw i coming a mile away! They were dropping hints throughout the entire episode, Harry telling Dexter that Rita and the kids are getting in the way, Deb finding out about what happened to Dexter….Triniity finding out who Kyle really is…..the whole time i was watching it it was so obvious they were setting up Rita’s murder…I would have been shocked if Rita was not Trinity’s last victim!
Great season ending, can’t wait for Season 5! I think I will miss John Lithgow more than Julie Benz!

  15. Haley says:

I didn’t see it coming until he was listening to her msg. As soon as she said ‘I forgot ..’ I knew it! Anyways..It must have been killing (no pun intended) Trinity to be laying there on Dexters table and not get in one more jab before dying. I dont think I would have been able to keep it in. I also think I’ll miss John Lithgow a lot too. Who wont I miss? Christine..she was so annoying!! I hated her character from day one.

  16. Leroy says:

One massive question about season 5 is how is miami vice going to piece together dexters relationship with the trinity killer after being left in such a cliffhanger. It can’t be ignored that rita is killed by the trinity killer, and obviously her death lies way way way out of the ritualised psyche of trinity… so (for miami metro) why dexter? Quinn’s already zoned in on Dex just as much as Sargent Dokes was in the earlier seasons… The main thing i’m concerned about for the writers is have they gone too far with bringing the shattered corners of dexters lives together in a way that makes the viewer unable to believe, related or agree with how easily dexter can get away with this anymore.

    The mask is slipping…

  17. Katrin Sedai says:

@Leroy, My thoughts exactly. I mean, add to that the fact that Deb now knows that the Ice Truck Killer was Dex’s brother? And now, another killer chooses him as his target? Come on. Miami Metro aren’t dumbasses, they’ll connect the dots eventually. And I just don’t know how will Dexter be able to kill people AND be a single father of *3*, unless he really busts out his budget on nannies. And Rita’s kids… My, Dexter has taken everything from them! First their dad, then their mom. Ouch.

  18. [...] I had the extreme fortune to interview the amazing Julie Benz about the events that transpired on the season 4 finale episode of Dexter which aired last [...]

  19. Tara says:

Hey Trent, FYI – Spoiler tags don’t work in google reader!!!! I almost cried when I saw this post, cos I’m in Australia and have to wait each week to download the eps :-( I tried to skim past it as fast as possible, but I still saw that Rita died, but still, was not expecting her to die the way she did, especially after Dexter had already killed Trinity!!

  20. Stacii says:

I just watched the episode and everyone is either still sleeping or hasn’t watched it yet! I want to effin scream! Why would they do this to me?! I need to see season 5 like RIGHT NOW! I personally never cared for Rita but I understood her role. I can see Dexter going absolutely nuts next season lol but who is he going to take his anger out on? I don’t see him taking care of all 3 kids. That’s a force. Aster and Cody will probably live with their grandparents and Harrison with Deb while they investigate Dex. I’m so upset. How many lies are the police going to believe…This show is effin awesome. My mind is everywhere. Lol Just ruined my day in the best way possible. *smile*
