The TV Guide

Last night the Turtle Party: Book Club met for our appointed meeting to discuss the book we chose at the last meeting, Everything Is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer and, by and large, we found that we were having a hard time with the book. The decision was made to select one of Andy’s other options and will, instead, read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon:

Some of us (me included) will continue to read Illuminated but the group as a whole will be discussing Kavalier at our next meeting. We had a great time hanging out last night … we held our meeting at the House of Pies in Los Feliz. We talked TV (Dexter, of course) and marveled at Ollie’s awesome new jacket:

‘Twas a fun night, indeed.

Tonight is my last night here in LA … I fly back to Detroit for the weekend to get my holiday visit out of the way. I’m excited to see my peeps back home, not excited for the 20 degree weather. Boo. Get warm for me, Detroit … I’m comin’ home!!

Everything is Illuminated is so amazing though, it’s one of the best books I have read. You should read Extremily Loud and Incredibly Close it too is phenomenal.

  2. Kent says:

I’ve never been able to find the words – or even *A* word – to describe how much I love Michael Chabon.
“snow dusted pork pie knocked to the left”

I had a hard time with that book also….HOWEVER, Extremily Loud and Incredibly Close is one of the best books I have ever read. I laughed, I cried, and could not put it down.

  5. Kenneth says:

I love the jacket. I’m from Guam so if you want any more fun memorabilia from here let me know.

  6. Heather B. says:

I listened to the audio version of Everything is Illuminated. The narrator was excellent and really added to the story imho.

  7. noxamillion says:

was her jacket a random find or tailored? only curious about the Guam affiliation since I’m from the neighboring island Saipan. you never really read about/see anything from our region so it totally caught my eye :)

  8. Alan says:

‘Tha Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay’ is one of my favorite books! Chabon is such an excellent story-teller, and his writing is great. Hope you enjoy it as well – A.

  9. Danny says:

Definitely don’t give up on Everything is Illuminated! I had a hard time getting through it, but by the end I was bawling hysterically on a plane. One of the best books I’ve ever read. I’m a huge Chabon fan too. Keep up the good work Trent. Love your site.

  10. Sassy K says:

I must echo some of the comments above – Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is AMAZING. Give it a read. I promise you’ll love it.

  12. KT says:

Ditto on the love for Foer and Chabon. Over the years, my book club has read both of Foer’s novels and Chabon’s “Kavalier and Clay” and enjoyed them all immensely.

  13. Susan says:

A little off topic from the book discussion….. Baby, its cold outside! Very cold here in Detroit. Bundle up and have a great trip!

I haven’t read that Chabon book, but I read “The Final Solution” by him and highly enjoyed it.
I don’t get to head to the Detroit area until next Tuesday, I’m jealous that you are going so soon. Good luck with the coldness…bundle up!

  16. Jess says:

GUAM!! I lived there for 3 years and loved every minute of that island!

  17. Kavalier & Clay is one of my favorite books. And i designed the front cover. So it was a thrill to see it pop up on one of my favorite blogs.

  18. KiTX says:

Just curious- will les Turtles ever go into David Sedaris books? I know they’re short stories, but they are so flippin great- then again, y’all might have read them all already. I also love Kavalier and Clay; Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close was good, but I don’t think it moved me like it seemed to move some of the other posting.
