Models thrifty fashions with style
Joseph Gordon-Levitt Does ‘GQ’ Magazine

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who recently hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live, is featured in the pages of the new issue of GQ magazine in a segment wherein he models stylish outfits that are fairly inexpensive. The gist of the article piece is that because money is tight all over, men have resorted to shopping at thriftier clothiers … but they can still look good doing so:

Remember 2006? When you dropped $300 at the club for a $30 bottle of vodka? When you weren’t really hip-hop if you weren’t cruising on a yacht, making it rain? When designers were casually declaring that America was over, that it was all about Dubai (or Moscow or Shanghai)? When that was something worth aspiring to? Now cut to 2009. While scaling back on restaurants and vacations can feel like a sacrifice, you might’ve noticed that clothes shopping on a budget feels more like an opportunity. Walk by the display windows of Club Monaco and you’ll spot mannequins fully styled in cuffed jeans and cover-ready bow ties. Or if you happened to be in SoHo on one particular morning this past October, you would have noticed a line of shoppers snaking down Broadway. They weren’t queuing up for concert tickets or Robert Pattinson but for a chance to get into the gently priced Japanese clothing emporium Uniqlo, where +J, a collection designed by Jil Sander, was about to hit shelves. Low-priced retailers are now selling everything the pulled-together guy needs, and they’re doing it in a way that doesn’t feel cheap. As Patrick Robinson, Gap’s executive vice president of design since 2007, says, “I went through each category—from tees to leather jackets to khakis—and created a product that looks, feels, and acts like something that costs ten times more. I’m hearing from people who used to wear $200 or $300 jeans that our $59 pair fits better.” Whether it’s a chunky knit from FCUK or a skinny tie from the superhyped British import Topman, the clothes you can afford right now are the clothes you actually want to wear … And consider that Swedish fast-fashion behemoth H&M is on track to post double-digit sales growth for 2009—this in a year when flat is the new up. It’s probably naive to say that the way we shop is undergoing a fundamental or permanent change; like all things, consumer habits run in cycles. But the new crop of budget-minded retailers offers refreshing proof that when the going gets tough, the tough get stylish.

True style does not come from a high end fashion label … it comes from the ability to pick and choose articles of clothing that work well with one another and look good on, no matter what size or shape you are. JGL looks absolutely killer in these outfits and you would never guess that they come from “budget” designers. To be honest, JGL would look stunning in rags if he wore them … some people have “it” and some people don’t. Joseph Gordon-Levitt deffo has “it”.

The 'Family Ties' mom opens up about her private life
Meredith Baxter Comes Out Of The Closet

Congrats and love goes out to Meredith Baxter (formerly Birney), the actress who famously played Elyse Keaton for many years on the 80′s sitcom Family Ties, who has decided to come out of the closet and reveal herself as a gay mom in the pages of the new issue of People magazine:

Most people know Meredith Baxter as Elyse Keaton, everyone’s favorite mom from the hit ’80s sitcom Family Ties. But now the actress reveals to PEOPLE that she’s ready for the world to see her in a different – and surprising – way: “I’m a lesbian mom,” she says. Before Baxter, 62, first started dating women seven years ago, the thought of being gay “had never crossed my mind,” she tells PEOPLE. Having been in three failed marriages to men (most famously to actor David Birney), she says of her many difficult years before coming out, “I was never comfortable with myself.” But she’s quick to add, “That doesn’t mean I was questioning.” Now in a four-year relationship with building contractor Nancy Locke – the couple have lived together for two years – the actress, who continues to act and run a skincare company, says, “I feel like I’m being honest for the first time.” Baxter was open about her new-found identity almost immediately with her five kids. Her son Peter’s reaction, like that of his siblings, was both reassuring and supportive. “I just couldn’t stop smiling,” says Peter, 25, “because she finally figured it out.”

What a great day … I’m sure Meredith feels as if the weight of the world has been lifted off her shoulders. I could not be happier for her … that she feels comfortable enough to share this news with the world proves that she is a very happy place in her life. She is very lucky to have the love and support of her family … and the love and support of a partner who loves her. Family Ties was one of my fave TV shows in the 80′s and I always thought it would be cool to have Elyse Keaton as a mom. Now I’m certain that is it is very cool to have Meredith Baxter as a mom ;)

Meredith Baxter also gave an interview to The Advocate, after the jump, check out some excerpts from her first interview with the GLBT press …

I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart."
Tiger Woods Releases Another Statement, Admits ‘Transgressions’

And so … the Tiger Woods drama just keeps growing bigger and bigger. Just when you thought it might simmer down, another new development comes out that sheds more light on all the rumors swirling around. As you may recall, Tiger Woods got into a car accident last Friday morning after he allegedly got into a fight with his wife over rumors that he cheated with a woman named Rachel Uchitel. Tiger then released a statement claiming full responsibility for the accident but, curiously, refused to answer police questions surrounding the circumstances of that accident. The police decided to cite Woods with a moving violation (a ticket) and that seems to be the end of that bit of drama … but while all of that was going down, another woman named Jaimee Grubbs came out with allegations that she, too, enjoyed an extra-marital affair with Tiger Woods … and she has the voicemails and text messages which seem to prove her claims. In the wake of her revelations, Tiger Woods posted another official statement on his official website which seems to allude to his acknowledgment of this affair. He doesn’t come right out and admit an affair but he does admit that he is guilty of “transgressions” against his family. Here is the full text of his newest statement:

I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart. I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves. I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone.

Although I am a well-known person and have made my career as a professional athlete, I have been dismayed to realize the full extent of what tabloid scrutiny really means. For the last week, my family and I have been hounded to expose intimate details of our personal lives. The stories in particular that physical violence played any role in the car accident were utterly false and malicious. Elin has always done more to support our family and shown more grace than anyone could possibly expect.

But no matter how intense curiosity about public figures can be, there is an important and deep principle at stake which is the right to some simple, human measure of privacy. I realize there are some who don’t share my view on that. But for me, the virtue of privacy is one that must be protected in matters that are intimate and within one’s own family. Personal sins should not require press releases and problems within a family shouldn’t have to mean public confessions.

Whatever regrets I have about letting my family down have been shared with and felt by us alone. I have given this a lot of reflection and thought and I believe that there is a point at which I must stick to that principle even though it’s difficult.

I will strive to be a better person and the husband and father that my family deserves. For all of those who have supported me over the years, I offer my profound apology.

To me, it sounds like Tiger is admitting to infidelities when he talks about “transgressions” (more than one?) but he is adamant about keeping his wife out of the drama as much as he can. I’m not entirely sure I believe his claim that his wife was completely innocent of the drama that unfolded on the night of his car accident (after all, why was he speeding away from home at 2AM so quickly that he plowed into a fire hydrant AND a neighbor’s tree?) but it really sounds like that is his story and he is stickin’ to it. My guess is that he will do everything he can to appease his wife … which prolly means he will take the blame for pretty much everything.

That is not to say that he should be without blame … after all, if those voicemails released by Jaimee Grubbs (who is a former reality TV “star” who appeared on the VH1 show Tool Academy) to US Weekly magazine are any indication, he really does have a few transgressions to be sorry for. After the jump, listen to the voicemail released by Grubbs which seem to give credence to her claims of an affair with Tiger Woods

Birthday Lurve
Happy 28th Birthday, Britney Spears

Birthday Lurve goes out to our dear Britney Spears today!! As you may already know, Britney just successfully wrapped her world tour The Circus starring Britney Spears earlier this week and returned home to SoCal from Australia just in time to be home for her birthday today. Later today, Elle magazine will be releasing Britney‘s coverphoto (yesterday we got a sneak peek at her Elle photospread) and I understand that Britney and her agent/beau Jason Trawick were spotted out hand-in-hand yesterday … but let’s just focus on Brit‘s bday right now:

One year ago today, David and I were in NYC at Good Morning America for Britney‘s big performance under the Big Top … it was the first live performance she gave on national TV since her troubles the year before and that GMA performance kicked off the amazing year that she had this year. December 2, 2008 was the day she released her latest album The Circus and was also the day she announced that she would be hitting the road with a new tour. Here we are a year later and she has enjoyed so much success since her birthday last year. I am so happy for her … she really seems to be in a great place on her birthday this year. Let’s send her all our love and best wishes for a Happy, Happy Birthday, Britney!!
