The Write Stuff

Last night David and I met up with our friends Darion and Alex so that we could all see the new movie Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire at the ArcLight together. Having read the book myself, I was in for a huge emotional cry-fest … and that’s exactly what I got. I am happy to say that Precious is nothing short of an absolutely amazing film:

It is very difficult for me to say that I “liked” the film, especially considering the subject matter … but the movie is an amazing representation of the book Push which tells the tale of a young woman who manages to endure tragic abuse (both sexual and physical) at the hands of her parents and finds salvation thru education. I will be SHOCKED if the stars of Precious, Gabourey Gabby Sidibe, Mo’Nique, Paula Patton and or Mariah Carey do not secure Academy Awards nominations for their work in this film. Each woman gives such a stunning performance, I was just riveted to what I saw on that screen. The book describes some very, very heinous acts and the movie alludes to most of those acts but, thankfully, spares the viewer from actually seeing them take place. If I have any complaint about the film, it would have to be about the fantasy scenes that Precious envisions as she is being abused. I understand the attempt to try and pull Precious out of her horrible reality into a world of happy fantasy but the unintended result is an audience laughing thruout some of the most tragic parts of the film. Nonetheless, the entire film is just … so powerful. I am not ashamed to say that I cried quite a bit thruout the film. Precious is such a stunning film … I hope it is rewarded well come awards season.

No big plans for today … I have to get my hair did and then we have some errands around the house to take care of. It’ll be a quiet day around here, something I’m very much looking forward to.

I am so jealous! I want to see this movie very badly. It looks amazing and I think I’ll have to read the book first. I can’t believe Mariah Carey pulled off such a performance! Wow. Surprising.

Really??? Mariah turned in an Academy Award worthy performance??? Wow. Color me impressed. . . . guess she wanted to put Glitter behind her?

I have been anxiously awaiting this movie for some time. I can’t wait to see it. I’m sure I’m going to be bawling my eyes out too.

  5. Ama Says:

Ah, I can’t wait to see this movie. This movie, and The Blindside(I think that’s what its called) both seem like well-made, touching movies. From what I have read, review wise, Everyone acting in Precious did an amazing job.

People have said they actually hated Mo’Nique’s character. Because, she really did a good job at portraying the character and that character’s feelings.

However, I’m also trying to prepare myself before hand. Because I have heard this story and movie will play with your emotions(get you crying/angry such thing). Gah, I don’t think I have seen any bad reviews about this movie yet, aside from it being ‘harsh’. Definitely a movie I am looking forward to seeing. :)

  6. JR Says:

This movie had me shaken to the core after I saw it. It haunted me and I am too afraid to read the book now if you are telling me it’s even more graphic. Everyone was amazing! I hope everyone gets a nom especially Mo’Nique.

    Lenny Kravitz was yummy onscreen!

  7. krissy Says:

I want to see this film so badly! It sounds very powerful.

  8. sugaredpeas Says:

i think the beauty of the fantasy sequences were to show that she had a world, an imagination, a life outside even without the words (literally) and the space. that moved the film from the “No’body Knows the Trouble I See”/Downtrodden Negro mess to a self-assertive gorgeous story about someone who can be broken AND survive with love. transformative filmmaking and a serious love letter to african-american women, of all shape, sexuality, and skin tone. LUH-UHVED.

  9. nicole Says:

Isn’t MC’s part too small to be considered Oscar worthy?

I am glad to hear that the film is a good adaptation of the book. The book is devastating and brutal, but hopeful. Can’t wait to see it. I strongly encourage people to read this book.

I don’t know if I can bring myself to see the movie, as the book still haunts me today. I read it in college…a great book but definitely brutal. I too encourage people to read the book!
