Because Hollywood can neither leave a good thing alone NOR come up with an original idea to save its life, it is being reported that plans are underway to relaunch The Crow movie franchise with a new star and a new tone for the films (films, I should point out, that were based on The Crow comic books created by Detroiter James O’Barr). As you may know, the late Brandon Lee (son of the late martial arts icon Bruce Lee) starred as The Crow in the original 1994 film and he was tragically killed while making the film. The movie was released anyways and went on to enjoy some success. Sequel Crow films each featured different actors in the lead role and failed to do very well at the box office. It would seem the plan is now to relaunch the entire franchise with a fresh new start:

Since it was announced that Relativity Media is developing “The Crow”, no one has been reported being in talks to play the major character, Eric Draven. In a recent interview with io9, producer Ryan Kavanaugh has talked about the progress of the project, including his “good ideas” for the casting. Asked if he has begun selecting actors for the movie, Kavanaugh stated, “We’re looking. We’re in discussions.” Moreover, he suggested that the chosen actor could be either someone famous or a new star, saying “It will be an actor you’ve heard of, yes. We’re not ruling anything out. We’re looking at both, with the very well known and the ‘very talented but they may not be quite there yet.” Gushing about the new “The Crow” film, Kavanaugh said, “I think it’s something cool, we’re approaching it differently. It’s really a whole relaunch of the franchise, much more of a dark superhero type.” He later assured the upcoming movie will not be “a remake”, but it will be “literally a relaunch of the franchise.” “Oh yeah, we’re sticking to the flavor of it. We’re just relaunching it and making it with a much more present day character, someone more relatable to everybody,” Kavanaugh went on explaining. While about the make up, he insisted that it will be “totally different” than in the original movie. “He’ll have makeup, but it will be different. The best way to compare it is the first ‘Batman’ and ‘Batman Begins’. In terms of their look and feel and character,” he further explained. Though the script for the movie has been completed and it “is great”, Kavanaugh admitted that the studio has not given a green light for his next project. “We’re very excited about it. ‘The Crow’ is definitely going to happen, we’re just getting all the pieces together right now. It’s not officially green lit, but it’s going to happen… I think in a couple months we could have the package together for sure,” he insisted. “The Crow” is based on a comic book series by James O’Barr. The story will revolve around a young man named Eric Draven who after being left for dead on the side of the road by a gang of street thugs, is resurrected by a Crow and seeks vengeance. The first film adapted from the comics stars the late Brandon Lee.
While I am very happy to see that The Crow will live again, I have mixed feelings about this reboot. The original Crow film holds a very special place in my heart. Not only is it set in a dark and stormy Detroit, MI (on Devil’s Night, no less) but it also had a profound effect on me as a youth back in ’94. The look of the film, the feel of the characters, the music on the film soundtrack (which includes Nine Inch Nails among some of my other fave bands) — those boots and leather pants … effected me on a very personal level. Add to that The Crow was the first movie that my BFF Sarah and I ever saw together … on a date! LOL. I just love Brandon Lee in that film and he will always be The Crow to me. Whatever this reboot may turn out to be, I hope it will stay true to the original vision of O’Barr‘s comics … and it better stay set in Detroit Rock City. I was never a fan of the subsequent sequels (The Crow: City of Angels set in LA is among THE worst films I have ever seen) but the original film with Lee as The Crow is holy in my eyes. I’m curious to see what producers come up with for this reboot … but, yeah, they’ll never be able to touch the original.

Oh NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! This is just BAAAAAAD!!! All around. Why???? Leave it alone! Brandon Lee did a badass job and NO ONE will ever top it, so why even try? UGH! STUPID STUPID!
Stop remaking everything. I mean seriously!!!
totally agree with you Trent!
Just curious, who do you think would play the Crow and do it a little justice? Brandon Lee left some pretty big shoes to fill!!
@Joanna — I’m not sure who would make a good Crow of the current batch of “known” actors.
Oh lord NO. How can they even think of doing a remake of this movie? It was awesome then and it definitely holds up in the present day. The Crow is not supposed to be a ‘dark superhero’ who goes around saving the world….we already have batman for that. And to think they’re going to change the way he looks to ‘fit with the times’..it has nothing to do with that, it’s total butchery of the original movie and the comics that the movie was based on. Making it relatable to everyone should not be the point, in my opinion, and I think that’s what was so good about the original. The people who got that character really loved the movie and it makes me sad to think that a movie like this could tarnish the memories I have of Brandon Lee. Leave it be.
Great. More dudes dressed as the Crow for Halloween because they think they’ll get chicks with that costume.
I don’t want to see it remade, but I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the only one I would want to see try.
I betcha any money it’ll be Zach Efron…
i don’t kno how i feel about this i was only 1 when this movie came out so did not know about it until this year when my filmstudies teascher who is also my film club manger nominated the crow and we all had to watch it. i absloutely loved it and brandon lee omg just too amazing so sad about his death though r.i.p.its weird when i first saw bradon in an interview about the film he reminded me of heath ledger and then the character he played also reminded of the joker its like they took inspiration from here and what ‘s kind of creepy is that they both died after playing such magnificent characters that provided the real big break for them.i really hope they do it justice and get the right feel.i can’t think of anyone who would be good to play the lead role but if heath ledger was alive i would have loved to see him play eric.thanks for posting
I totally agree with you Trent! The original Crow holds a very special place in my heart, and I loved Brandon Lee as Eric Draven! I can’t imagine anyone ever filling his shoes! Good luck with that one Hollywood!!!
My first thoughts: OH HELL NO.
This could (and probably will) be very, very bad. Like Trent and Kimmie said, the original film is very, very dear to me. I find myself getting very pissy about the idea of Hollywood sullying the original with a “relaunch” or whatever the hell they want to call it.
And what the heck does this guy mean about making the character more relatable to everyone??? Eric Draven is a character that anyone who’s ever had love taken away from them can relate to? Anyone who’s ever loved and lost can relate, BAHHH. I don’t like this, lol.
OH NO!!!!! This is a bad idea. Brandon Lee was totally badass and I don’t think anyone else will be able to do the role justice.
I, as a few of you have stated, hold this movie close to my heart as well! That soundtrack was top notch and I think I saw the movie about 5 times in the theater..LOVED IT! If they could do a Batman Begins-type makeover, it could work..But how often does THAT happen?
I hear there is going to be a remake of Batman Begins, too. /snark
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO no one can play eric draven better than brandon lee he is a legend and they will kill it making a remake
i love this movie so much
I feel the same way about this!! I don’t like the idea. It bugs me. As soon as I saw that news, I was like “NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!”
It REALLY WAS “bad enough” when they made the city of Angels movie………. blech. It just upset me so intensely when Brandon Lee died…. such a beautiful, beautiful man… I just haven’t ever been able to accept anyone else as “The Crow”. No one else could play that part like he did. And I agree that if they did want to continue this, they should find some sort of ‘rare gem’ that isn’t well known at all. I’m not even sure that that would be satisfactory enough for me. I wish they would have just ended after the 1st movie.. Also, as some others stated, WHY do they have to remake and continue on all these movies? Are there no new ideas left in the world?? Not even.. say…. the Crow’s youngest living FEMALE of his bloodline comes to finish his work for him??? (that way they wouldn’t need a Brandon look-alike)… Ehhh…
No. They cannot redo this … Our first date! :) How dare they! Who does Hollywood think it is anyways?! ;)
(Though I agree with the one comment about Heath Ledger being capable, but perhaps it’s because I felt his joker was somewhat Crow-like).
they had better NOT redo this movie. Brandon Lee died making this movie, you can’t undo something as epic and as tragic as this movie was. leave classic movies alone and come up with new shit hollywood.
you all know something …. NOT ONE OF YOU ARE MENTIONING that hollywood has tried and FAILED 4 TIMES
(4 , u say ? , i am including the short lived show as well)
@ PIXIESBASSLINE
i fucking swear , we fans need to scream to the damn heavens , DONT touch it .
they remade myers, remade jason, remade Godzilla (US version ,….) now they are REMAKING FREDDY/PINHEAD/ next thing you know this shitty film will become infamouse for one of the actors getting his nuts cut off.
last female of his bloodline ? / considering the fact that most CROW fans think Erec was an orphan , hollywood will write something shitty in like that JASON VORHEES can only die by a VORHEES angle .
IM PRAYING THAT THEY LEAVE GREMLINS alone …
fuck !! ! ! ! !
So NOT impressed with the idea of the original film being re-made… nothing will ever be like the original and they need to leave it be. Brandon Lee was perfect for the role and that is why subsequent movies have always sucked ass. This new version will suck ass, too.
You know what.. lol… I have SO avoided any remakes of the Crow, that I wasn’t even aware that they had actually made 3 more of them!!! How UHG!
I don’t think remaking certain movies is that awful.. (if the original was made before the 90′s)… BUT… the remakes could really have the potential of being bad-ass… they just NEVER ARE!!! I don’t understand how they can’t make a remake that totally blows the original away….. I mean, they have all the material there.. just change and add onto it… BUT.. NOT THE CROW, dammit!!!
Why can’t we get a remake of “whatever happened to Baby Jane?” THAT sounds like it could be cool… if it weren’t ruined by a low budget sort of thing….. *sigh*
