It makes no sense that Maine put the issue to a vote. Imagine if Civil Rights legislation had been put to a vote in the 50s-60s. Sometimes you just have to force the right thing on people. I know that sounds harsh, but sometimes it is true.

While I’m proud of my fellow Washingtonians, Referendum 71 should never have been a issue. It was already signed by the governor, THEN people who deciding that they were “protecting marriage” (who have been married multiple times BTW) petitioned to get it on the ballot… I guess little steps are better than no steps at all (Maine) or steps backwards (California).

Shame on you Maine! As someone who has lived in Maine, I would like to make it clear that Maine is full of Conservative Rednecks who do nothing but sit on their butts all day living off the State. If you live off of everyone else’s tax money, your vote shouldn’t count ;P (I’m just joking about that last part, sort of. I’m just so mad! I can’t believe I actually had faith in Maine.)

That is great that they are making progress, but I agree with Trent. I think we learned decades ago that separate is not equal. You do have to give props to progress, though!

@Matt Thompson — It is great news about what is happening in Washington!! Domestic benefits are very important but if same-sex marriage were legal, there’d be no need for such a second class status.
