Jake Gyllenhaal Does ‘In Style’ Magazine
Did you know that Jake Gyllenhaal is an eyeglass wearer? I sure didn’t … which I why I was very surprised to see his appearance in the new issue of In Style magazine talking about his need to wear glasses and his lending support to the New Eyes for the Needy charity which gives out vouchers for folks in the US to receive free eye exams and free glasses as well as donates prescription glasses to underprivileged countries. Here is Jake’s New Eyes advertisement in In Style mag:

The copy reads: I’ve had really poor vision ever since I was a little kid — my mom first took me to the doctor because I was smacking into walls — and every time my prescription changed, we gave my old glasses to New Eyes. So when I started looking for a cause that I had a strong, visceral connection to, I thought of it and wanted to help bring awareness to its work. New Eyes sends donated prescription glasses to underdeveloped countries, and in the U.S. it distributes vouchers to patients for a free checkup and free glasses. There are so many people who have bad vision and don’t know it. I’ve seen kids who were on the verge of failing out of school who got glasses from New Eyes and their lives changed. It made me think, What if, when I was young, my parents hadn’t been able to afford my glasses? What would my life have been? Thankfully, my eyesight is something that I can take for granted. I want to try and help other people take theirs for granted as well.
This is so cool … there are so many needy charities out there and this is but another one. But, before Jake’s appearance in this ad I had no idea that New Eyes even existed. It sounds like they do a lot of great work for a lot of very needy people. Jake also appears in a promo vid for the charity — after the jump, check it out in full …
Ain’t he a dreamboat? Philanthropy sure looks good on him, don’t it? I love that Jakey poo seems so dedicated to this very worthy charity. I wish him much success and urge all y’all to lend a hand, if you can, and pledge your support to New Eyes for the Needy as well :)

As someone who had really bad eyesight from an early age like Jake I fully support this cause. I was doing badly in school and acting out until I got my glasses and the world literally became clearer.

When I first saw the photo I thought, What’s with the giant one eye? Then I saw it’s for something with eyes. That is funny.

One thing’s for sure: if I was dating Jake I would NEVER take my glasses off.

The problem I have with this is that the glasses go to UNDERDEVELOPED nations. What about kids in America who can’t see?
I think people are too focused on helping those abroad, when we have our own internal issues to fix first. It’s a great company and a great idea, but I think that looking out for American kids is more important than a random child somewhere else. How can we expect to fox other nations issues when we don’t have our own resolved?

@Becks — Folks here in the US get vouchers for new glasses, the used/discarded ones go to underprivileged countries … is that good enough?

New Eyes runs two programs: our domestic program provides new prescription eyeglasses to poor children and adults and our international program distributes used glasses to the impoverished in developing countries. Right now we have 700 people on our wait list (due to shortfalls in funding) but, in fact, we always fill children’s request right away; they jump to the front of the list!
