‘Dollhouse’ Is Dunzo! UPDATE: Joss Whedon Speaks

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
November 11th, 2009

Damn … got some really bad news for fans of Dollhouse. It has just been reported that Fox has decided to cancel the series … which really sucks so damn bad, I can’t even fully express myself:

“Dollhouse” is closing its doors at Fox. The network has canceled Joss Whedon’s cult fave, which in May beat the odds with a second-season pickup despite low ratings. The sci-fi series, which is filming episode 11, is expected to finish its 13-episode order. After some dismal performance this fall, despite the ratings bumps “Dollhouse” got from DVR viewing, Fox benched the show for the November sweep after four episodes. It is not clear if Fox will air the remaining episodes starting Dec. 4 as planned.

This is a bunch of bullshizz! And now Entertainment Weekly is confirming this reportDollhouse is dunzo for sure :( First Fox decides to put the show on hiatus, pulling all planned eps of Dollhouse from the airwaves for the entire month of November AND THEN they decide to cancel the show before it is even brought back on the air. To be honest … I’m not at all surprised. Exiling the show to Friday night has kept the show down in the ratings since it debuted last year … I don’t know how they ever thought the show would be able to flourish by keeping it on Friday night. The mothereffers at Fox better allow the already filmed eps to air … it may lessen my hatred of them a little bit … just a little. I sincerely hope that Joss Whedon doesn’t waste his time again with the Fox network. What shitty news ;(

UPDATE: Joss Whedon has posted a statement on the Dollhouse cancellation on Whedonesque.com. After the jump, read his statement in full …

Hmm. Apparently my news is not news.

I don’t have a lot to say. I’m extremely proud of the people I’ve worked with: my star, my staff, my cast, my crew. I feel the show is getting better pretty much every week, and I think you’ll agree in the coming months. I’m grateful that we got to put it on, and then come back and put it on again.

I’m off to pursue internet ventures/binge drinking. Possibly that relaxation thing I’ve read so much about. By the time the last episode airs, you’ll know what my next project is. But for now there’s a lot of work still to be done, and disappointment to bear.

Thank you all for your support, your patience, your excellent adverts. See you again. -j.

Sucks!!! I hope Joss Whedon knows that his legion of fans love and support him … and we will eagerly await his next endeavor. The man is a genius, he won’t be down for long. Thank YOU, Joss for all your hard work … it is much appreciated.

Fox did the same thing to Eliza’s last show Tru Calling, it was excellent but they put it up against csi and at that time that show was in its prime, tru calling didnt stand a chance against it . I loved that show and when they cancelled it i said i wouldnt watch anything on fox aside from sytycd

  2. cbr600girl Says:

Oh come on! First my Eastwick and now my Dollhouse?!? This sucks!

  3. Chivonne Says:

    WHAT THE FUCK.
I’m so pissed. They do this to me EVERY year !!!! SyFy better fucking pick the show up. I’d even take CW at this point.

  4. Marge Says:

    Jeez! That’s a great loss!

  5. Lana Says:

I don’t watch DollHouse, but I notice that networks really just do not give shows a chance anymore. They hardly promote their shows, they place them in the weirdest time slots, they know that internet/DVR viewing of shows is EXTREMELY popular right now, yet, they give a show the ax the very second it performs subpar to the big hits. I AM SO OVER NETWORK TELEVISION. If Ugly Betty gets cancelled, I am DONE with television.

  6. ksant Says:

it airs on friday night – what did they expect would happen with viewers!!! BRUTALLY UNFAIR!!!

i *just* watched epitaph one the other night…the amazing-ness of it just makes me want to cry to think we aren’t going to see the “in-between” :(

  7. Jadedkitten Says:

Noooooooo but totally expected whatever another cult classic for Joss

  8. CHASE Says:

Yeah, why don’t they just move it to another programing network? Maybe that will happen. I’m not a fan of the show (never watched it) but Fox put that show up for slaughter themselves.

  9. Liebchen Says:

FOX gave Whedon the chance to move the show to another night. . Whedon didnt want to, liking the less pressure that a show is under to be a big hit. .

So in the end, it is NOT fair to put all the blame FOX for the night. .
Coming from a person that LOVES the show, maybe its right to blame the near 3 million people who stopped watching. .
Or maybe its right to blame the show, for not keeping the 3 million people interested in returning.

  10. Mrs. Clarkson Says:

Trent, I don’t think Joss wanted to go back to Fox. I believe reading that when he met with Eliza and they came up with the concept for Dollhouse, it had to be on Fox because she still had contract with them….either way, it really sucks!

  11. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@Liebchen — From whence comes this assertion that Joss turned down another night? From what I understand, he was hoping for a Tuesday night timeslot.

  12. Ada_1601 Says:

Anger doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel towards Fox for this… if it wasn’t for Bones and House (and what was Dollhouse) I would not even watch their channel, all they seem to show (and put in good time slots) now is ‘reality show’ crap. If I was Joss I would see if SyFy would take the show, it’s a small network, but they might be able to save the show. It’s such a good show and totally kept me on my toes. Sad to see ANOTHER great Joss Whedon show cancelled.

  13. Massimo Says:

I am constantly amazed by tv networks. This happened to firefly series and the fans are still begging joss to do more on the series. This goes to show you not to trust anyone in management. They don’t have a clue what’s going on.

  14. Catherine Says:

Well this sucks… Dollhouse is an awesome show… gah!

  15. All Women Stalker Says:

We need an Indie TV network of some sort. Is there such a thing?

    -meream

  16. uhu Says:

I feel bad for the people that liked the show. That said… The fact of the matter is that from the beginning the show wasn’t pulling in numbers. And in TV it’s a numbers game.

  17. IamLegend Says:

big screw up as ever FOX tv, no wonder you are at the bottom of the ratings heap!

  18. Liz Says:

    :(
I am very upset!! I love Dollhouse, and the last episode they aired with Sierra’s story was amazing!
    Fuck you, Fox!!

  19. Sara Says:

WTF… I feel like all these shows have so much potential to grow and they never get the chance. I love everything Joss has done, and I still feel really sad about Firefly. I know Tru Calling wasn’t his, but that was great too… what’s up with doing one season or barely letting it finish or canceling it and making it either finish up fast or leave it open ended?? Now the only time I will watch Fox is for Bones. I agree with everyone, Syfy should pick it up, that would be great!

  20. Libby Says:

Ugh, I hate Fox. I really think this show would have done much better on another night – I don’t understand why the first move is to cancel it instead of trying it on another night instead.

Joss should approach NBC next time – they need a hit show, haha.

  21. jeffrey Says:

Should have sold it to HBO or Showtime so they could show some of the flesh the show was all about.

  22. SNT Says:

Love your continuing Whedon love and support, Trent, but a teensy correction: whedonesque.com ain’t Joss’s official web site – it’s an independent fan-created and run site that Joss (and some of his affiliated writers) seems to enjoy participating in. Which, obviously, we approve of. :-). I agree with every word in your last ‘graph. Cheers!

  23. Michele Says:

Can I tell you how tired I am of shows getting canceled just after I start watching them…well I am. Im super over it

  24. Ash Says:

I work at Fox and the other day we all on the fox lot got an email saying that there will be an explosion of sorts for the Dollhouse show. So I’m guessing they are going to finish out the rest of the season. Trent you want anything from the lot?

  25. Cat L Says:

    W.T.F.!~!@~ NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  26. jm Says:

Joss needs to bring JAMES MARSTERS!!!! back to tv…plz plz plz plz plz

  27. Kim Says:

this makes me so angry!!! i didnt even know it had started up again this season for a few weeks because there was no commercials for it! i randomly noticed my Tivo had taped it from being set up the year before after 3 weeks!

  28. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@Ash — I’ll take anything you can grab, seriously :)

  29. Jim Says:

This was the worst show on TV. I hope it stays dead

  30. Rose Says:

this is bullshit. im so sick of all my favorite shows getting cancelled. they need to knock it off. BRING DOLLHOUSE BACK

  31. Chester Says:

    I love dollhouse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! fuck fox!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  32. Jon Says:

Sorry for all you guys who liked the show – it sure does suck to have a show cancelled – but I’m not surprised. I’m a viewer who turned off for the 2nd season after making an effort with the first… it’s just not up to the same brilliant standard as Buffy or Firefly! Whedon seems a bit hit-and-miss. Maybe his next project will get the mix right and he’ll be onto another winner…

  33. Tom Says:

The first season was ok. But the second season was some of the worst tv I have ever seen. I wanted it to be good but gave up in the middle of the 3rd episide this year. It was horrible boring tv. It seems like the few that like it do so because they think it is cutting edge or different. When in reality it was just bad tv.

  34. Puller58 Says:

As I find Eliza to be annoying as a person. (Won’t do nudity. Snif) I consider this cancellation to be karma. Take yo’ clothes off, sweetie. ;)

  35. Shelly Says:

They should totally shop this show around. It’s smart, action packed, sexy and intriguing I’m sure another network will take it.

  36. Wendel Says:

    Fox is noted for this.
They put on a show that is different then yank it before it can build an audience. They did it with Wonderfalls, Wedding Bells, Firefly, they even did it to Alien Nation, the best show they ever produced.

Why does Fox hire such bonehead programmers??

  37. Jamie Says:

I honestly don’t know what Joss was thinking going back to Fox after the way they fucked over Firefly. I’m knew this was gonna happen as soon as I found out the show was on Fox. The only surprise is that they waited till the 2nd season to cancel it.

  38. toofunny geeves Says:

Smallville kills another one. Ever notice, everytime Smallville moves its timeslot, another show gets cancelled? This is like the third or fourth show that’s happened to.

  39. anne Says:

    LA SIGH i loved Firefly!!

  40. ramjet Says:

This is why I hate episodic television,as soon as you get involved in a show it gets yanked. Fuk FOX! What are they going to replace it with, some reality dance / talent show with home videos of misunderstood teenage angst ridden vampires getting whacked in the nuts? Throw in a cranky crippled doctor and a couple of mismatched investigators in a love hate relationship, animate it and show it twice weekly. Wow, this programing shit is easy!

  41. assmonger Says:

Even though she’s hot, the show really sucked and needed to go. It was no Buffy. How this was picked up for a second season when The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which was good, was cut I’ll never understand.

  42. alex Says:

    @Ash – shoot i want something!!! lol

But seriously words can’t even describe how bummed I am to see Fox let another awesome Whedon show go … first Firefly … and now Dollhouse. Such a shame … also … thanks Trent for your continueing support for dollhouse it was good to come across someone else who loved the show so much :)

  43. Tommyboy Says:

I’m not at all surprized by this. The douches at FOX yack about demographics all the time, but I don’t think they actually know what that means. They threw Dark Angel onto Friday…and it died. They replaced it on the schedule with Firefly…and it died. They put The Sarah Connor Chronicles on Friday…and it died. Now they have Dollhouse on Fridays…and it’s dead. Every one of these shows (and probably a few I’ve forgotten) were aimed at a young audience. A question for the geniuses at FOX: Where are young people on Friday night in fall/winter? Well, if they’re in high school, they’re at the game… or just partying. Once they move to college? Partying. After college? If they went into medicine or law, working their a**es off, otherwise, partying. Where they’re NOT, you flippin’ a**holes, is sitting in front of the tube!

  44. lisa rae Says:

i pray they at least end the show for the fans. i need end to the story. it wouldn’t be right if they don’t at least give us that.

  45. vic Says:

It’s ok, the second season is being aired in it’s entirety, with the last 3 episodes due to air in January. All i can say is that the last 4-6 episodes have all been great. Particularly the most recent, ‘The Attic’ it was fascinating to see the DH background lore explained and really set up these next few episodes with an epic story!
I’ll miss DH sooooo much <3
