People magazine brings us our FIRST LOOK at the newest member of the Richie-Madden family today … Sparrow James Midnight (who was born last month) and his mom Nicole Richie are featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of People … check out their adorable coverphoto:
Six weeks after welcoming their first son, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden – along with their 21-month-old daughter Harlow – are showing off the latest addition to their family, Sparrow James Midnight Madden. “I couldn’t be happier,” Richie tells PEOPLE. “The only thing you want is for your kids to be healthy and happy, and they are. I’m right where I belong.” In an interview at their home in Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles, Richie, 28, and Madden, 30, her boyfriend and front man of the band Good Charlotte, say they are deprived of sleep, but grateful their daughter Harlow is now fawning over a baby brother. “I’m glad I had a girl before I had a boy,” says Richie. “She just loves him so much.” Adds the children’s proud papa, “She’s very gentle with him.”

Man-o-man … look at how cute they are. As Harlow Winter gets older she looks more and more like Nicole … and little Sparrow looks so much like his father Joel Madden. They are just … precious. At last … we get to see what this new little guy looks like … and he’s a doll.

That is great that they are donating the money, but that is clearly not what this cover/article are about. They are about using the baby to get Nicole’s face on the cover of a magazine. If it was about charity, it would be mentioned on the cover. It is gross how people use having a child as a career stepping stone. Babies are humans, not props.
@Krissy — Nicole doesn’t need to use a baby to get on the cover of any magazine she wants. I think it’s awesome that they are raising a huge sum of money for a great charity and all they have to do is pose for a few pictures.

I guess we will just have to disagree, Trent. IMO, she wouldn’t be on anything if she wasn’t having kids (or getting arrested). Even her clothing line for Pea in the Pod was because she was preggo. She was a drug induced mess driving on the wrong side of the freeway until she got pregnant, and from then on her kids have kept her in the press. Pretty sad when you get more buzz for your reproductive habits instead of talent. If she REALLY cared about her charity, she would have made it a requirement for them to tout the charity on the cover. Seems like the charity is an after thought to make the pimping of babies look less nauseating.

Krissy, she is donating to charity and there can be NOTHING negative to say about that but I guess people will never be satisfied with anything. I personally think she and Joel are wonderful, classy people who obviously are amazing parents.
@Krissy A little harsh but I can see your point. I always thought she was only ever famous for being Paris Hilton’s friend and then for having cute kids. BUT I do think she seems like a good mother and while I don’t understand putting your kids on the cover of a magazine either, at least she is donating the money and isn’t going the Tori & Dean route and sticking them on a reality show to boost her career.
Nicole is my favorite, and I don’t see how anyone could have anything bad to say about her now. The baby is NOT just Nicole’s..it’s Joel’s too..and he’s famous for having talent. Nicole is AMAZING though, I love love love her.
first all, shes gonna be in limelight anyways, one for being girlfriend to joel. Two because her dad is famous, and third because she always be remembered as paris best friend. SO even if she wanted to stay out of the hollywood rich and famous, she couldnt, because she is always gonna be followed and watched. I guess she figures that by putting her baby on the cover she will make a quick dollar and its gonna go to a charity that could do good by it, if she never then some other photographer would get the first shot of sparrow and posted all over the net, and magazines, and whats she gonna gain by doing that? at least by putting his pic on there then the money will benefit someone. I think its a great idea to post this pic on a magazine. I also think shes just a proud mom, and happy to pose with her new baby. Nothing is a better feeling then showing the world your new child. Plus if she didnt put the pic up, people will probably harass her and follow her more.
I would think that besides donating a large sum of money to their charity they (and other celebrities) put their own kids out there to 1) lessen the intensity of the paparazzi trying to get the “first” photo (remember, nicole was recently in a car accident because of paparazzi and her kids weren’t even with her) and 2) to decrease the value of any paparazzi picture of their child in the future. Baby has already been seen, no need to pay a random ‘photographer’ thousands for the picture. It’s on their own terms.
Everyone was waiting to see the ‘first’ photos of Sparrow. Just as everyone was waiting to see the first photos of Harlow. Of course they could have taken a photo and posted it on their site for their fans to see, but I think they wanted to take a photo that everyone can see(the people without computers too) I may be wrong, and if so I apologize. But, didn’t they only take photos with one magazine? At least Nicole and Joel didn’t decide to take all different photos with different magazines.

Since all money earned from the photo shoot goes to their charity. I don’t see how doing this is such a bad thing. Its like taking baby photos or a family photo with the new addition and sending it out to your loved ones. Except its on a magazine cover and its for their fans. By Being a celebrity I guess things such as this are different ;)

Nicole will always be seen as Paris’ best friend or one of the crazy ‘It’ girls. But I don’t think its right in saying she just got the things she has now because she is pregnant/having children. Sure, she has straightened up a lot since finding out she was pregnant with Harlow. Being her fan, it makes me really happy to see she is now taking better care of herself and that she has picked herself up from her bad time.

But she has also worked hard to get to this point. Of course, her getting her pregnancy line out quickly and into stores was because she was already recognized in the public eye. However, I think even if she wasn’t and she would have applied for it. Eventually she would have gotten it, though it just would have been a longer process. While most people think her pregnancy line is ‘normal’. That’s just what sales it, because its normal and comfortable.

She is working hard to keep her multiple careers on track, along with raising her kids(Of course Joel is helping too) At least she isn’t lazing about her house having maids do everything. So I don’t think anyone should make harsh calls such as she is only using her children to stay in the limelight. To me she has always seemed mellow. She has had her bad points in her past, but who doesn’t? Having her faults is what makes her normal, and likable(to me anyways)

I don’t see how people can say others are “amazing parents” or that they aren’t “lazing about the house having maids do everything” when they have never met these people! And as for lessening pressure for baby pictures, I just don’t see that high of demand for these people. Halle Berry had tons of demand to see her daughter, and she didn’t feel the need to exploit her to get attention. At the end of the day, I guess there are just some people who think it is ok use children and destroy their privacy, as long as it is their favorite star that is doing it.
no,no,no,no,no. Exploiting yourself with your kids is something that Khloe kardashian and the playboy girl are doing. Every friggen week they’re on a cover of some tabloid with their big ol bellies out. They’re both whores who want attention. This family on the other hand is actually a good, loving, wholesome family who are just REALLy pround of their kids and want to raise some money for Charity. I love Joel and Nicole. i hope they’re together forever, although, i must admit that I dont get why they won’t get married either. its a little strange but whatever.
They are doing very similar things, I don’t see how you can say that they are all that different…except that you like one family more than another. It is ok if people disagree with me, but I do have reasons for my opinion. I don’t think people realize how much power you give to people when you sell your image and likeness (or that of your child). Your image is like clay, and people and companies can mold that into any narrative they want. In photoshoots and reality tv, they manipulate your image to tell what ever story makes money. Kids do not have the ability to understand the life long consequences of this and the invasion of privacy, and the parents should be there to protect the kids from this. One person I know who works in reality tv worked with a family, and he was really upset because the kids were angels, but he knew that editors would take their footage and make them look like monsters because it creates a better story. Perhaps, in a few months, out takes of this shoot will be used to portray the kids in a bad manner. Most likely not, but you are putting your children at great risk by exposing them. Sending cards to your family and friends who know and love your children is far different from sharing it with the whole world, a world that isn’t always so kind to kids.
Ok, I have said my peace. Everyone is entitled to think differently, that is just how i see things.
@Krissy i think you’re 100% completely wrong about them “exploiting their children” because you’re assuming their motives which are completely unfounded, they’ve given Harlow’s picture money to charity in the past. Secondly, your whole bit about “friends and family seeing the pictures because they know and love” the kids is bogus, because as a Good Charlotte fan myself, the connection that Joel and the rest of the band have with their fans is most definitely like a family, and we love these kids just like a blood family would. To most of us, this isn’t like seeing a stranger’s child, like the rest of the world would probably view it because they don’t know Joel and the band on the same level as we do. They know Nicole from ridiculous headlines and they hardly know Joel at all (“Nicole Richie’s rocker beau” as he is commonly referred to, not even by name, as opposed to Joel Madden of Good Charlotte, she always comes before him in headlines)
Well I guess only time will tell. We all know that there are a LOT of HORRIBLE parents out there (motherhood doesn’t change the lives of every woman) so these two are definitely doing the right thing. I work at a police station and can’t believe some of the stuff that happens. I’d think Joel would be the more devoted to the relationship than Nicole so in 5 or 10 years, we’ll see. I hope they do stay together.
