Michael Jackson’s What Could’ve Been
The TV Guide

Last night a group of friends (Tam, Rob, Brett, Ollie, Caleb) joined David and me at the first public screening of Michael Jackson’s This Is It documentary/concert film. We’ve already heard what Elizabeth Taylor had to say about the film and earlier today we read a glowing review from the press of the film … now I’m going to chime in with my personal feelings on the film:

The overriding thought in my head while I watched all 111 minutes of this film was What Could’ve Been. From the onset, you could see that MJ had planned nothing short of an epic stage production to mark his return to live performance … and thruout the film, you can get a sense of what he had planned. To be honest, I found much of his performance raw and unpolished, not at all surprising considering they were still in rehearsals … my hope was that we would get to see as close to the final product as possible but, alas, that is not what is presented. What we do get is a very interesting inside look into a part of Michael Jackson‘s world that we would NEVER have been privy to had he not passed away in June. Considering how much of a perfectionist he was, there is no way AT ALL he would ever have wanted the public to see this footage if he were still alive … but since he is no longer with us and the world was waiting with bated breath for his concert staging we, at least, get as close to the real thing as possible. I am just STUNNED at the prospect of what could’ve been had he been able to bring this concert to life in front of a live audience. The Thriller section, which was meant to be viewed in 3D, just looked EPIC. But … we will never get to see the final product and therein lies the feeling of loss. I’ve read review after review that praised MJ for his “lucidness” in this film and, to be honest, I didn’t really see too much of that. I did see a 50 year old man holding his own as best as he could with a team of much younger performers. I’m utterly convinced that MJ would’ve come ALIVE on the concert stage … no moniker of disappointment would even be visible if this show had been allowed to come to life. But without the glitzy costumes, full production projections and any honest run-thrus of the show numbers (I understand MJ had not yet run thru a single full dress rehearsal before his death) we are left with fragments of … what could’ve been. It’s a shame that he was so adamant about “saving his voice” because I would’ve loved to have heard him sing his heart out … but, again, therein lies more of the loss. The film will be a boon for any MJ fan. Folks who are marginally interested in the man may find entertainment in this film but it’s really not meant to win over new fans … it’s a gift to the legions of fans Michael Jackson left behind.

Tonight, David and I are meeting up with friends again to enjoy a night of horror fun at Universal Studios. I’ve never been to Universal‘s Horror Nights so I’m excited … I hope to have fun pics to share tomorrow :)

Trent, I love your blog. But Before MJ died you never had a nice thing to say about him. “it’s a gift to the legions of fans Michael Jackson left behind.” so is that not including you? You also told one person on twitter it was rude to tweet during a the movie..um you twittered throughout his entire memorial. You seem to just jump on the bandwagon of whatever is popular at the moment with no shame.

    • @maria — Before MJ died there wasn’t much nice stuff to talk about. This movie is a gift to his fans but as I’ve said many, many times before … I was a fan of the MJ of the 80s but nosomuch the MJ of the past decade or so … so, no, I don’t consider it a gift to me per se. It’s one thing to use a cellphone in a darkened movie theater where other people are trying to watch a film and quite another to report from an event that has worldwide interest that so many others were not allowed to attend. As far as my movie review, I’m trying to convey my opinion on the film as fairly as possible for those interested … which is what I do with all the movies I see and talk about on the blog (which you should be well aware of since you “love my blog”). What bandwagon are you alleging I’m jumping on, exactly? I’m not sure I follow. If you are referring to the fact that I blog about the stuff that is going on in pop culture on a day to day basis then, yep, that’s what I do … I’ve been doing it for the past 5 years or so :)

@Maria – you have got to admit that the MJ of the ’90′s & 2000′s was def not someone you’d have a lot of really nice things to say about – so don’t go jumpin all over Trent for that.
Tweeting at the memorial was to give a lot of us who weren’t there at the memorial, or couldn’t watch on tv a way to know what was going on. That’s vastly different from a movie that we all can attend on our own and isn’t a one-time thing. And guess what – Trent can become a fan of whatever he wants to, I think he has that freedom. And, has the freedom to write what he wants to. Just as you have the freedom to read or not read. : ) Sounds like a good plan to me!!

  4. Mr. Gyllenhaal says:

Thanks for the review. I will most likely wait to see it at my house. Sounds interesting thou. I am more interested in seeing him as a person than entertainer.

  5. CHASE says:

I’m sure he would’ve lipsynched 98% of the tour. Didn’t he do it on his previous tours as well? It’s totally understandable since his moves are demanding. And, to be honest, I doubt he could really sing like he used to because all of this plastic surgeries on his nose most likely effed up his breathing techniques. Oh well. It’s quite sad, really.

  6. Shannon says:

Trent I completely agree with you. The movie left me wanting more and wishing I had the chance to see Michael live in concert. I loved the movie because we got to see Michael as a man and artist not just the entertainer. I loved seeing his interactions with the dancers and other staff members. “You have to let it simmer” :)

  7. maria says:

@suzilee thanks I had no idea I could, or could not read.. Thanks for the update!! As I said before I love trents blog, I was just stating something I observed. And I think Trent did a very good job of expressing his opinion, which I respect. But thanks for your input that was not needed. I come on this blog to listen to trents blog, not yours :)

  8. Kat says:

I see what Maria meant, I don’t agree with her, but I see what she meant and where she is coming from. I do feel A LOT of people instantly became MJ fans when he passed, which in all honesty there is nothing wrong with that. I have liked him for many many years, I never bought into the bad things said about him, and I had quite a number of his CD’s and all his hit songs on my ipod. But a few people I knew, couldn’t of named one of his songs (besides that obvious ones) but now they have a few of his records.
Just because Trent went to watch this film doesn’t mean he is jumping on a bandwagon. Just because he no longer post negative things on his doesn’t mean that either. I feel he is doing it out of respect and not many negative things have been said. I think a lot of poeple will see this film out of being curious. Didn’t Trent have concert tickets anyway? So I am sure he wanted to get an idea of what was going to happen there. So Trent was a fan before he passed, or he wouldn’t have bought tickets to the concert.
Again I get what Maria was saying and why she thought that.

  9. Winona says:

Thanks for the honest review, Trent – I am going to see the film with a friend of mine on Sunday and can’t wait!

  10. SFan says:

I thought Trent’s piece on MJ Movie was very good and extremely insightful! It actually makes me want to see the movie and make my own observation. I believe because Micheal Jackson is deceased its on thing to respect the dead , but Its also another to have a opinion and use our Amendment for the “Freedom of speech”. As so many others I to was a fan of the 80′s Micheal but in the latter part of his life I was also disappointed in the choices he made. I try not to judge but when people speak of their dissatisfaction on how he choose to live, then die hard fans should not get offended just realize “it is what it is” or in MJ’s case “was” ! I think we must all come to terms that while Micheal Jackson had a “EXTRAORDINARY” gift he was also still HUMAN!

Great review Trent, I am in complete agreement and feeling very sad today thinking about what an amazing concert it would have been. I still don’t think it has sunk in for me that he’s really gone forever now, and that this film really “is it”. I went to see it last night (in the UK) and loved it, especially the little amusing parts like when he goes on about letting the introduction “simmer” – brilliant, I miss him even more now. :-(

  12. HeatherLea says:

I absolutely loved the movie. And, even though I’m only 16, I did love MJ’s music before he passed. But, because I’m only 16, I never had the opportunity to see him perform live, due to the fact that he hasn’t toured in many years. And this movie brought me the experience of seeing him LIVE. Not him as a kid with the Jackson 5 on a clip from the 70s, way before I was born. Not any videos from the 80s or the 90s-before I could ever truly appericiate that. No, it showed me what was going to happen. It showed me all that he put into this show. It showed me that I am right to defend him when someone at school says something uncalled for. Even though Michael may not have made the greatest choices in his personal life, his personal life has nothing to do with the quality of his music. Like, the legal troubles he’s had have nothing to do with how amazing he was as a musician, as a performer. It is completely irrelevant, and I’m proud to stand up for him.

This movie will restore everyone’s faith in him as a performer. He is such a perfectionist, and he really had a vision for his comeback. This movie will show you how much he loves US, because you can see how hard he worked and how much he wanted this for US. For the fans that he left behind.

IT was going to be amazing. IT was going to blow everyone’s mind. And even though IT never came to truly be, THIS IS IT is here for US, so that we can keep Michael with US. The fans, not the naysayers. Not the people who threw him down and spit on him in his time of need. Even though he would have never wanted this to get out when he was alive, due to how unpolished everything was, it’s here now.

I personally believe Michael was an angel, sent from my God to inspire me and make me a better person. And, this movie is a gift from my God and Michael that I will cherish for as long as I live.

Thank you, Trent, for your opinion on this movie. I felt it was very fair, and unbiased. For those who have bad things to say to you after reading that, please turn the other cheek and ignore them!

(On a lighter note, while seeing the movie, my best friend and I hooted and sang along, even though we thought we would piss off everyone, because we were in the front row with probably 15 people dispersed behind us. But, after the movie was over, there were 5 or 6 people waiting for us in the lobby that were waiting there to THANK us. Some were older, and they said that our reactions and seeing us have such a good time made them feel MJs spirit and joy even more. They said that we made them remember dancing around in their rooms listening to the tapes and all that when they were our age. And, I just told them that I just wanted to enjoy the rehersal as much as MJ would have wanted me to enjoy the finished product. It was so cool!)

  17. Roo says:

Hoo im from Singapore and the only time MJ came to Sinapore was in 1993 when i was just 5, too young to appreciate a concert. I watched the film and i can see how MJ is such a natural on stage. I love his singing voice, it’s so unique, full of depth and emotion. I booked tickets for an awesome seat, close enough to the screen, the beat, watching MJ on screen made me terribly regretful i was too young to know when he did came to Singapore to perform. I was simply born too late.
