Matthew McConaughey Gives The Paparazzi The Bird

Say hello to his little friend
October 8th, 2009

Animal lover Matthew McConaughey, who last year procured a little pooch for his family a few months after the birth of his son Levi Alves, was spotted roaming the streets of Mailbu, CA in the company of his newest pet … a cute little Sun Conure:

While it’s not odd at all to see celebs out and about with their pets, it is odd to see anyone walking around with a pet bird on their shoulder. I understand Matthew kept feeding his new friend grains to keep the little guy from flying away to freedom. I don’t know if we’ll be seeing much of the newest member of the McConaughey family from here on out because birds tend to spend most of their time cooped up in birdcages … but if Matthew felt safe bringing out this bird this time there’s no reason not to believe he’ll bring him (or her) out again.

Its a Sun Conure and its beautiful.

  5. cat Says:

Yep, sun conure, and its wings are clipped (totally painless if done correctly) so it can’t fly far

Just gotta hope it’s potty trained, which it definitely could be. Though I’m not sure if feeding it is a good idea, LOL.

When I was in school there was this guy in my apartment complex who had a HUGE parrot and would walk it around the complex on his shoulder. Such a weird site.

Birds on shoulders are strange but when I was a teenager I regularily saw this guy with his pet snake around his shoulders. Now *that* is weird.

…What’s going on with his face?

  12. Tilly Says:

Actually looks like a jenday conure. Sun conures do not have solid green wings. They are yellow and orange all over. Jenday’s have the green wings

Is it just me or does this picture make it look like Matthew’s had some work done on his face!? Weird.

  16. Anne Says:

It is not a sun conure it is a Jenday conure. They are closely related but the Jendays have green wings. Birds are not smelly if kept clean but they are loud. Even with clipped wings they can fly short distances and there is always the problem of predators, even pet dogs and cats, that can be a danger to them.

  17. That Girl Says:

It’s not the food that’s keeping the bird there…its wings are clipped. I hate when people do that. It’s not fair to the bird.

  19. Dan Says:

Anne is correct. It is a Jenday Conure. They are not big, wieghing only 4 to 5 ounces, They originate in the wild fom NE Brazil, but are bred domestically now. not captured. It is no longer legal to remove the wild in order to protect the species. .The Sun Conures have more yellow on their wings and back.

Their wings get clipped to prevent them from getting spooked and flying away and falling victim to predators. When you take away their freedom of flight then it’s only fair to give them new freedoms, such as a ride on your shoulder or inside your jacket, This gentle and devoted little bird was obviously hand-tamed as a baby and loves being with his favorite people, He just wants to be loved and included in family activities.

Parrots like this one can live for 25 or 30 years. Some larger parrots, macaws, and cockatoos can live 60 to 80 years or more, It is both challenging and rewarding to keep a companion parrot, They should be considered a lifetime commititment and only acquired after due diligence. By the way, setting off your smoke detector will give you an idea of how loud these wonderful guys can be.
