Not old, not has been but Human… if liking lady gaga makes a person want to hold onto a star so be it, but have you considered the fact that it the universe thats in control of all the stars. We all get old but its up to the person not to fade away.
MADONNA will never go away! That is a fact but the woman who is madonna the person that we dont know at ALL… ONE DAY she will be gone and like all the shit talkers of michael jackson people will be doing the same thing kissing ass after death. Before he died, he was a child molester, a monster, a freak a zombie the list could go on and on now… HE IS A GOD and how funny is it that no one talks any shit anymore… If he lived through it people would be on a rampage but its that old tale your never truly appreciated until you are dead.
CELEBRATE LIFE BITCHES and stop judgement one day its going to be you in the hot seat and then what?

I tend to think Madonna thinks its her duty to give her opnion of these artists. I mean, fair enough she can see “herself” in terms of career paths, decisions and how you made it in the business. But it seems Madonna just thinks she needs to give the stamp of approval so then everyone will like them. Without this “stamp of approval” it wouldn’t have mattered. Gaga has outsold Madonna in albums and singles in their newest albums. Actually two albums for Madonna.

It just seems to me like Madonna thinks her thoughts matter when it comes to other artists. Madonna will always be selling out stadiums but her moments of being the biggest sellng star is over. Her albums don’t fair too well nor do her singles on the charts except for in Clubs and in Europe. She may be Queen of re-inventing herself, but seh attempts at such a young age range it fails TBH.

Fair enough artists like Gaga and Britney have influences from Madonna and idolize her – but Madonna isn’t someone who can change the consumers mind on someone. She has never had that power and never will. She just cashes in on whats popular at the time and Gaga is that person.

@Trent- I am aware you are a big Madonna fan! While HC isn’t her best effort I was wondering what you hated about it. There are some really great songs and some mayjah stinkers. We’re around the same age and I’m interested to hear what your favorite M era is. I prefer anything from “Music” on, though I do like her old stuff as well. I have felt she just keeps getting better….are you an 80′s, 90′s, 00′s kinda guy? What’s your “go to” favorite M album? For me it’s “American Life”, the album, not the song. ;)

I love love love Madonna as BOTH a person and a performer! Her older songs are classic. I haven’t listened to much of her new stuff, but when I want to hear vintage Madonna, I’ll listen to “Like a Virgin,” or “Borderline.” Those are two of my favorite songs, among others.

Madonna is protean, and is very adroit at reading the zeitgeist. She continues to reinvent herself and stay relevant, despite the new crop of singers emerging on the scene.

Mela, I know a lot of people would disagree with me, but I don’t see Gaga as one who is trying to shock. I think she is just having fun, and isn’t afraid to be weird. For example, after being nominated for VMAs she said, “After years of hustle in New York City, where we made our art videos in bars, myself and the Haus of Gaga are honored to receive nine nominations for the 2009 VMAs,”… “All you need is a camcorder, a flashlight and one truly great idea. Thank you, MTV, for being our video flagship, and for supporting this bunch of inspired kids, who love to get wasted and make art together.” I really like the idea of a bunch of people getting together to see where their brainstorming takes them, being unafraid of the consequences of whether it is “cool” or not.

@Lana – I totally agree! Madonna is using every person who is “hot” out there to make her career more relevant. That’s why I believe her and Britney are no longer BFF’s because Britney realized that Madonna was only using her. I believe Britney revived Madonna’s career in 2003 because “American Life” was getting shiteous reviews and it’s Madonna’s lowest selling album to date. I don’t believe GaGa has the “it” factor. If Britney never went through her breakdown, she would have the title Queen of Pop and she would have taken it from Madonna with no problem. Now, she has to work a little bit harder to get it.

I have to believe that Madge is just taking a huge gracious step out there to compliment Gaga since they shared a performance and now Gaga is sort of tied to her career by association. I really hope Gaga can outlast her own devices and become a real artist yet. If I see one more horrifyingly contrived attempt to “shock” people or appear mysterious I’ll just..well I won’t do anything but turn off whatever I’m watching I guess.

I miss Madonna’s glory days. I respect her early career but I can’t say that anything she’s done in the last few years has particularily thrilled me or seemed that fresh. I think she’s a real icon though. And it’s true…her genius has been aped by many a pop princess. Her legacy can’t be denied.

I think Madonna’s early career is similar to Lady Gaga, but not because of their stage performances. Madonna NEVER went as far over the edge as Gaga does. However, in Madonna’s early career, she really was the vessel that showed the world what was going on in the New York club scene (which is what Gaga is doing now with her artists Haus of Gaga). I don’t get it when people say Gaga “ripped off” Madonna…their performance style seems so different to me. Vocally Gaga sounds a bit like Madge, but that is it. I think that Madonna is very busines smart, and she has repeatedly found “unknown” producers and writers to give her a fresh appeal. However, I think she has become too dependant on the work of other people. I don’t think she is musically gifted enough to create on her own. Her tone really turns me off, ESPECIALLY quotes like, “Geek’ is not a word anyone uses to describe me”, and how she has treated her former trainer in recent days.

Timbaland is still a great producer in my book but I generally prefer when she works with UK producers. Where I think she went wrong was working with Justin Timberlake but I am pretty biased because I can’t stand him. I just think he’s a talentless hack and would be nowhere without Timbaland and Pharrell…and Britney for that matter. I still can’t get over that HE was who inducted Madonna into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – totally ridiculous.

I like Lady Gaga a lot actually but I just don’t put her anywhere in the same realm as Madonna, at least not yet. I never really thought it came across as desperate that Madonna hung out with these younger pop stars though. She seems like a real music lover to me and so I always took it as her just being maternal and generous and sweet but again, I am biased.

Britney to me is the only pop star who even holds a candle to Madonna and that’s only because of the excitement she manages to generate and that overall mystique that she continues to maintain. Their music is so different but she just seems to have been born to be a superstar, much like Madonna. I agree with whoever said that Lourdes might very well be the one to take up the mantle. That little girl is FIERCE!

It is an odd juxtaposition that someone who claims to be so devoted to a spiritual path of growth and enlightenment can’t seem to let go of her past glory and move on.
Looking inward and creating her OWN stuff instead of desperately trying to attatch herself to the flavor of the month would be much more dignified.

@Justin — I love Madonna, love love love her … but I do not believe she is “ahead of the game”. ‘Hard Candy’ was not a great album, in fact, it was one of her worst. Working with Timbaland YEARS after he was hot was a huge misstep for her. I hope her new album will be innovative not another mess of recycled and tired music trends.

Love Madonna. She will always be ahead of the game. What matters most for me is the music and she still makes kick ass records. I don’t see it as her passing off a torch, since it’d be like handing it back to herself. Britney and Gaga would be nothing had they not ripped out entire chapters from Madonnas book.
