‘Glee’ Does ‘Entertainment Weekly’
Glee, arguably the most buzzed about new hit series of this Fall TV season, is featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine. Altho the series features a eclectic and diverse cast of characters, this week’s EW coverphoto only features 3 principal stars of show. HMMM. Nonetheless, with a show as successful as Glee, it’s no wonder that it’s finally being splashed on magazine covers … like this one for Entertainment Weekly:

This season’s most unexpected success story, Glee is snarky, theatrical, totally addictive — and a cult phenomenon on its way to becoming a national obsession. The comedy is currently averaging a steady 8 million viewers a week, and the people watching are enviably young: Five million of its viewers are in the desirable 18–49 demo. (It’s little wonder that in September, Fox made Glee the first new fall series to be given a full 22-episode pickup.) Meanwhile, fans are staying engaged even after the episodes are over by downloading the cast’s newest cover tunes. More than 1.7 million Glee songs have been sold since May, and that’s after only seven episodes. “I thought it would be a huge project, but I didn’t know it would be this big,” says Rob Stringer, chairman of Columbia/Epic, Glee’s label. “The public appetite for this music is incredibly intense.” Adds the comedy’s co-creator Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck), “It seems to have transcended just being a television show to moving into other cultural areas.” The number of die-hard Glee fans — or “Gleeks,” as they call themselves — is bound to grow early next year, when episodes will follow American Idol. The young cast of newcomers is already beginning to see the effects of Glee mania. “I was at Disneyland yesterday — big mistake,” says Chris Colfer, who plays gay fashionista Kurt. “I might as well have walked around with a target on my shirt, because those are our fans. I stopped and took pictures probably 40 times in between rides. This one lady got a picture of me on the Tower of Terror and had me sign it.” Says co-creator Brad Falchuk, “I keep getting e-mails and phone calls and running into people at parties just telling me the show makes them feel happy.”
I admit it … I’m a Gleek. While I find the storyline marginally entertaining, I just cannot resist the fun musical numbers. To be honest, I tend to watch the show in the background while I work and then pause/perk up when I hear a musical number kick in. It’s fun having 3 numbers to look forward to each ep. In really exciting Glee news, the show has secured the rights to Madonna’s catalog of songs and is planning an “all-Madonna” ep to air next year:
EW has learned that Madonna has given Glee the rights to her catalog and that an all-Madonna-music episode is in the works for early next year. The hit series has been building an audience and filling the iTunes charts with its cover songs, and Madonna’s involvement is a testament to how big the show is getting. Also, an amazing Glee cover of a classic Madonna track has the potential to be even bigger than the show’s blockbuster take on “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Quinn totally has to do “Papa Don’t Preach.” And I can completely see Rachel tackling “Material Girl.”
Fun!! There is so much for Gleeks and Gleebs to look forward to, I’m thinkin’ that Glee is going to be a big hit for some time to come. Are any of y’all fans of the show? If so, what’s been your fave song performed on the show thus far?

I’m a total gleek, and I’m 44 years old. Probably not their intended target demo!

Single Ladies even though it was more dancing that anything. It’s my favorite episode. It pains me to think about Kurt and how his dad exclaimed, “So little” as he ran out to kick a FG.
Love it.

Yeah, ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ was in the first episode, and that’s when I got hooked.
October 22nd, 2009 at 9:22 am

One of my favorites thus far has been Vocal Adrenaline’s version of Rehab. I really thought it was awesome. I also really enjoyed the show’s version of Somebody to Love. It was simply amazing. I love this show and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for future episodes!

Oh my gosh an all Madonna episode of Glee! Too much to handle!! That is going to be awesome!!!
So far my favorite performance has been Somebody to Love, but I am biased because I love that song. Each one has been fun in its own way though!
My favorite episode was definitely the Single Ladies one though. The stuff with Kurt and his dad was too sweet.

October 22nd, 2009 at 9:47 am
My favorite… “I Wanna Sex You Up.” Yeah…That was definitely my favorite. The mash-ups were also really good.
October 22nd, 2009 at 9:50 am
Awesome! I agree Trent the plots mildly entertaining…its for it holes (how many times does Mr. Shooster come in with “the song” for regionals or sections or whatever? when are they actually going to compete?). The music is great though, I really liked Mercedes song when she broke Curts windshield, and the mashups were pretty good…..I would have LOVED to have seen Chris at Disney haha. Hes so adoreable it’d prob be a hysterical to watch him get mobbed.

I’m a Gleek! I agree with Mallory on the Vocal Adrenaline version of Rehab – loved it! Single Ladies was also great. I love that they did “Push It” at the pep rally – hilarious!

I’m in love with Glee! It’s so fun :D I don’t know if I can pick a fave song, but I reeeeeally like “Don’t Stop Believin’” and “Alone”. Journey and Heart are two great bands! I am unbelievably pumped about the all-Madonna episode. Seriously, I can’t wait!
October 22nd, 2009 at 10:02 am
@KT — Kristin Chenoweth’s version of ‘Alone’ by Heart is AMAZING!
October 22nd, 2009 at 10:10 am
I love this show! It’s one of the only shows I actually watch when it’s on, usually I TiVo everything! I don’t think I could possibly pick a favorite song, I love them all! But I have to say I loved watching the football players all dance to Single Ladies!
October 22nd, 2009 at 10:23 am

@roxster – I was thinking the same thing about regionals/sectionals during the show.
I am such a Gleek.

@roxster and @jen the season finale is when they go to sectionals
October 22nd, 2009 at 10:51 am
I LOVE Glee and I love when they did Golddigger!
October 22nd, 2009 at 10:52 am
@Trent…Alone was also wonderful! I listened to the whole song on Itunes, wish they would of played more on the show!
October 22nd, 2009 at 11:07 am
It’s about time they got a magazine cover – I don’t know who loves the show more – me (49 years) or my daughter (13 years). She downloads all of the songs right away. Love how you don’t know who is going to be the “feature” till it happens…Sue doing the “swing” last night…who would have ever thought you would see that!
October 22nd, 2009 at 11:10 am
I love how everyone’s embraced the performing arts geeks with this show! Watching the pilot brought me back to my high school drama days, which was also the default gay club to some extent as well. ;-) “Don’t Stop Believing” was a hard act to follow, but “Alone” and of course “Single Ladies” are my favorites so far. Can’t wait to see “Defying Gravity”!
October 22nd, 2009 at 11:34 am
Don’t Stop Believing. Take Bow. Single Ladies. GAAAH LOTS OF SONGS. Haha

October 22nd, 2009 at 12:52 pm
I love Don’t Stop Believin’. And Mercedes is FABULOUS – what does the girl have to do to get a lead part???
Thoroughly enjoyed swing-dancing Sue. :)
October 22nd, 2009 at 1:03 pm
@Sophie- I completely agree about the “Sweet Caroline” performance. I smiled and sang along the whole time. It was SUCH a good rendition!!!
I’ve been a gLeek since I HEARD about the show. And when I saw the pilot ep back when they first showed it, it just cemented that status in my mind. I love it!
October 22nd, 2009 at 1:43 pm
LOVE this show! It’s the only thing I’m following right now.
I really liked Sweet Caroline also! Schuester singing “Gold Digger” was so entertaining!
October 22nd, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Mash up of Walking on Sunshine and Halo def up there on my list of favorites, but Journey is my all time favorite song! Bust a move was fun too. :)

Sweet Caroline was AMAZING! though all of them were just great!
October 22nd, 2009 at 3:45 pm
I still laugh hard at Push It on Youtube. I watch it online since I’m a brit, and I do love it. Don’t Stop Believin was surely pretty awesome for sure.
Although the actress playing Mercedes needs more singing time, she’s amazing!
October 22nd, 2009 at 7:49 pm
I’m starting to cringe at some of the numbers….
October 22nd, 2009 at 8:42 pm
I loved “Bust The Windows”- not sure if that’s what it’s called- but she’s amazing! I also loved last nights Thong Song. I heart me some Shooster. TOTAL Gleek!
October 22nd, 2009 at 8:45 pm
DONT MAKE ME CHOOSEEE !!!!!!!!! its so hard………… I am definitely picking up the soundtrack!!
October 23rd, 2009 at 12:18 am
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this show. Ep 7 was probs the funniest one ever – soooo much Jane Lynch = comedy gold. But for songs I liked the Halo/Walking On Sunshine mash up, Take a Bow, Last Name and Alone (Kristen Chenoweth omgggg).
October 23rd, 2009 at 1:30 am
I love glee! I watch it on hulu cause I can’t watch in on wednesdays…(T_T) I love I could have danced all night from last night’s episode.
October 23rd, 2009 at 3:22 am
I love Glee. I love the craziness of the characters and the sitautions.. it reminds me alot of popular, but it is a lot more accessible which is a definite step forward by ryan murphy. The song are amazing.. favourite is probably a tie between don’t stop believin, take a bow, and the confessions/its my life mash up. But all the songs have been fantastic!!

I can’t wait to buy this on DVD and play the eps to the point of knowing the dialogue perfectly.
