First Look: Janet Jackson, ‘Number Ones’

Last weekend we learned that Janet Jackson will be releasing a greatest hits collection, titled Number Ones, in November and today we get our first look at the album artwork. Amazon has been updated with the release info for the collection (you can see the tracklist HERE), including the album artwork:

Zzzzzzz. I understand the photo used for this album cover art was taken back in 2001 … and appeared in the tour book for Janet’s All For You Tour. It’s like they aren’t even trying very hard to market this collection … I am not impressed. I am hearing that Miss Jackson will be releasing a new studio album of entirely new music in 2010, which is exciting, but this release just seems like a throw-away to me. If the folks behind this release don’t seem to care about promoting the disc, why should I care about buying it?

Why you gotta hate on Janet? All the Britney love, but almost nothing for Miss Jackson? I think JJ probably had quite the influence on Britney as a young girl. I know a lot of us were dancing around to “Miss You Much”, singing into our hairbrushes and trying desperately not to kill ourselves while perfecting the chair move from the “Pleasure Principle” video. I think Brit may have been one of those girls, too.

Sure, the album cover isn’t a wonderland of glitter, colors or flash, but what difference does it make when the music contained inside has been making us dance and sing for over 20 years?

PS-I promise I’m not a Janet super stalker or anything. I just think that the whole “It’s what’s inside that counts” motto applies here.

@JHop — Hate? I don’t hate Janet, nothing that I said is even remotely close to “hate”. The album cover is disappointing, boring and IN FACT recycled. The end.

  3. Snorri Says:

It is absolutely horrendous how the music industry feeds us this substandard garbage and expects us to buy it. I could make better artwork myself! That’s the best photo they could come up with?? Why not go all out for Janet’s retrospective?? Give us some beautiful artwork, maybe a special edition book or something!

First LaToya released a song dedicated to MJ, then her brothers are going forward with the reality show, now Janet (perhaps record label cuz I doubt it was her choice) is releasing this album. I think her record label is hoping to make some sales out of this whole situation. That’s just what I think!

  5. Drew Says:

Trent, most greatest hits album covers are always from old shoots. Very few people do new shoots for greatest hits albums. Britney’s My Prerogative album cover is an outtake from a previous Rollingstone shoot, her new singles collection cover is various pictures through her career, Madonna’s Greatest Hits cover is an old picture, Michael Jackson’s were old pictures, Celine Dion’s was an old picture…lol do i need to go on?

  6. Jesse Says:

Trent is right. Get what he’s saying. He wasnt talking about the music, or the fact that this disc is called number ones when not all songs on it are number ones, its the fact that the album cover looks like an “Essentials” album you buy at Walmart for 5.99. It’s Janet “Ms. Nasty” Jackson, and this cover is just dissapointing.

  7. JHop Says:

Dang. The one time Trent replies directly to a comment I made and it’s to snap at me! I’m gonna take it as a compliment.
We’ll just have to agree to disagree, I suppose. I personally still couldn’t care less if the cover is recycled as long as the tunes are good.
Also, one wonders if she just hasn’t been in a photo shoot kind of mood (for obvious reasons).
    Janet looks gorgeous either way.

@JHop — Aww, I didn’t mean to sound snappy. Janet is so awesome and this collection is full of amazing hits … they couldn’t shoot a sexy new pic for the cover? That said, I am very excited for her new album … I’m a Jan fan :)

  9. JHop Says:

@Trent – It’s all good! I love and read you every day! Keep on doing what you’re doing exactly the way you’re doing it.

  10. CHASE Says:

Britney’s cover for her singles collection sucks as well! Janet looks high in this photo. Single collections are so… lame.

  11. J Says:

I don’t get why all the comparisons to Britney. I mean Trent didn’t even mention her or say “at least Britneys cover is better…” (which it is). But look @ Madonna’s Celebration. Thats pretty much recycled cause it’s an old photo just edited all colourful. I mean Madonna hasn’t looked like that in years and never will since shes covered in plastic these days.

But @CHASE, Britney’s cover is actually what a Singles Collection should look like. It has a photo from each of her albums and during the years. It makes sense, just not the order in which the photos are placed tho.
I like the font in this Janet cover but they could have at least used a newer image even if it was from the DISCIPLINE photoshoot. It can look lazy when an artist can’t even promote their work just a little bit, even if they maybe don’t agree with whats being released.
