First Listen: Leighton Meester, ‘Somebody To Love’
Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester, who provided guest vocals on the Cobra Starship single Good Girls Go Bad, released her first single as solo artist earlier today … which we get to listen to here on the blog right now. The track, Somebody To Love, features sexy crooner Robin Thicke on vocals and, in all honest, is not a bad song at all. Here is the cover artwork for Leighton’s debut single and the lyrics to the song:

Somebody To Love (Featuring Robin Thicke)
Paris France to Michigan
London town and through Berlin
I can’t believe this place I’m in
Everywhere and back again
Porcelain and China Dolls
Give me one and I’ve seen them all
Got my back against the wall
Wonder where I’ll be tomorrow?
But wait, now how long could this take?
It’s hard to find a man,
When you’re gone before he wakes.
They say it’s hard to achieve
But can’t a girl believe?
CHORUS:
Is there somebody who still believes in love?
I know you’re out there
There’s got to be somebody
I search around the world
But I can’t seem to find
Somebody to love
ROBIN THICKE:
Baby girl, there you at
Looking at me like a putty cat
Wondering where that thing is at
Wondering where your ring is at
Nobody ever did it quite like this
Nobody ever did it quite like you
Do your hair, I bought you shoes
We can hit the town like superstars do
You lookin’ for love? Then let me show you love
Give me the key to your heart
I can give you what you want
When you’re waiting for love
And you’re lookin’ for someone
I’mma turn this gossip girl into a woman
CHORUS:
Is there somebody who still believes in love?
I know you’re out there (I know you’re out there)
There’s got to be somebody
I search around the world
But I can’t seem to find
Somebody to love
Is there somebody who still believes in love?
I know you’re out there
There’s got to be somebody
I search around the world
But I can’t seem to find
Somebody to love
Je t’adore, Je t’adore (I love you, I love you)
Make a move, do the thing
Turn around, strike a pose
Je t’adore, Je t’adore (I love you, I love you)
Make a move, do the thing
Turn around, strike a pose
Ooh, I like it
Ooh, I need it
Ooh, I want it
Hey Hey
I know it’s hard to achieve
But can’t a girl believe?
CHORUS:
Is there somebody (Is there somebody?)
who still believes in love? (Who still believes?)
I know you’re out there (I know you’re out there)
There’s got to be somebody
I search around the world
But I can’t seem to find
Somebody to love
Is there somebody who still believes in love? (who still believes)
I know you’re out there (who still believes)
There’s got to be somebody
I search around the world
But I can’t seem to find
Somebody to love
(You say hello, I say goodbye) x2
Somebody to love
I really like this song … it’s really sexy. Considering how much I like Good Girls Go Bad, I might end up liking Leighton’s whole album. HMMM. After the jump, listen to the song in full …
FYI, you can blame On Air with Ryan Seacrest for the Music On Demand audio tag. I like this track … what do y’all think?

Hahaha “I’mma turn this gossip girl into a woman.” All in all it’s catchy and cute…I wish she did more singing than rapping/talking but it’s still cute. Has a Hipster Britney feel. (She would definitely have an all out dance sequence during that strike a pose part)! :)

not bad at all!

I think that she could have potential as a pop star (who couldn’t, really), but I found this song to be quite boring. It doesn’t make me want to dance…just nap.

This…is terrible. EW.

I agree with jo, I wish she did more singing than the rapping/talking. I feel like she had an okay voice in good girls gone bad and she could showcase that more. It’s catchy though and makes me want to hear mroe from here, so it’s a pretty good first single overall!

Meh.

i really wish people with no real singing talent would stop getting record deals…sigh.

I would’ve preferred Robin Thicke ft. Leighton Meester. Not bad though.

I was kind of disappointed that she didn’t sing — I’ve heard her sing in other videos and her voice is truly beautiful and husky!

My girl crush. This isn’t bad either. The chorus loses me but I like the verses.

I am sorry, the lyrics SUCK!!! The beat is okay but the lyrics are no good!
October 13th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
I like the song but the repetitiveness drowns out the whole song in my opinion. It should be 3:35 but around 3:07 – 3:12

No points for talking on a track…Despite Robin and my love for Leighton, not at all a fan of this track.

I really hear nothing special about this song and doesn’t really show much musical or voice talent for her. I think she did okay with this song but going from being known for acting to singing you gotta be amazing for people to take you serious and I just think she didn’t hit the mark.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
The lyrics are the worst. Did she write them herself?

bleh

I got scared as shit when I saw the title of the song, think she covered Queen. But she didn’t so it’s all good. And the song, especially the lyrics, are so cheesy.

That was really bad. Why is is this disco pop the genre all “celebrity” turned singers, save Scarlett Johansson, go to? Paris, Heidi, and now Leighton. It really just seems like they’re trying to mask the fact that their voices are nothing special. Anyone who can carry a tune can do what she did. Actually anyone who can speak can do what she did.
And the lyrics are ridiculous. Also Robin Thicke should stick to actual singing.
October 13th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
I really love it
October 13th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
Oh gosh I hated it. She’s not singing!! She’s speaking!! Even when she tries, the music mix covers her vocals up – probably cos of the lack of good vocals on her part. Reminds me of when Paris Hilton tried to sing. Ew. Come on Leighton you can do better than that!!
October 13th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
She actually has a really good voice…when she uses it. She kind of sounds like Regina Spektor.
October 13th, 2009 at 8:17 pm
By the time it got to the “je t’adore” part, I just felt embarrassed for her- that’s cheesy beyond belief- bad lyrics, boring song. I agree that she actually *does* have a good voice, and I also love the Cobra Starship song for it’s catchiness, but this is not a good example of ..anything.
October 13th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
Love the girl but this is a craptacular track. It’s like 12 robots singing featuring Leighton and Robin Thick.
October 13th, 2009 at 11:16 pm
She dunno how to sing ! Her skills are like Lindsay Lohan’s… nonextistent ! Actually she sounds a lot like Lindsay Lohan did in “Bossy”… the song’s another pop song after another… nothing really interesting to launch a real carreer ! She should take singing classes. She’s a good actress she should stick to it !
October 13th, 2009 at 11:54 pm
good girls go bad is the stupidest song of the year. horribly cheesy. this is only slightly better.
its a shame, she’s got a good voice just terrible taste in music choices.
October 14th, 2009 at 1:21 am
Why, Robin…WHY??? You could do so much better!
October 14th, 2009 at 1:36 am
“Do your hair, I bought you shoes” ???
The fact that someone was paid for these lyrics is frightening.
HATE.
October 14th, 2009 at 1:54 am
i think she only actually sang like ONE line (I know you’re out there (echo) in the 2nd chorus) in the entire song and the rest was sex-ed up talking..
unless that one line was sung by a backup singer, I think she sounded not too bad, if not a tad bit too synthesized..
let’s have some real music featuring real vocals from her please!

BAG OF GENERIC SHIT
October 14th, 2009 at 4:46 am
I can’t even tell it’s the same Leighton that sang in “Good Girls Gone Bad”. Definately, different vibe. I like both and it definately shows some versatility. I’m a big Britney fan, and if she can get away with songs where she’s talking rather than singing, I’ll let Leighton slide.
October 14th, 2009 at 6:09 am
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. no thanks.
October 14th, 2009 at 6:18 am
the song is SO dull.
October 14th, 2009 at 6:45 am
terrible!

I’d rather delete Leighton’s parts and keep Robin’s. He’s awesome!
October 15th, 2009 at 6:49 pm
It was not suppose to feature her vocals, everyone should not let that impact your thought of the song. I agree with what someone posted above, the chorus is the weak part (but probably the part that will make it do well since its easy to remember), but the versus are actually really good. I want everyone to dissect all the lyrics you hear in pop music, its not very good, ever, and I love me some cheesy pop music.

I thought her first single was “body control”?
songs not bad though.
