First Listen: Imogen Heap, ‘Thriller’
"It's close to midnight ..."

Imogen Heap, who is one of my fave female singers of all time, paid a visit to the Dermot O’Leary radio show on BBC Radio 2 this past weekend and performed a live piano version of Michael Jackson‘s hit song Thriller. Now, anyone who is at all familiar with Imogen Heap should be well aware of her musical style and can appreciate the way she transformed the song into one of her own … for those of you unfamiliar with Imogen, her cover of Thriller can give you an idea of just how amazing she is:

Because we are just a few days away from Hallowe’en, MJ‘s Thriller is getting a lot of play all over the place … which is why I think it was very smart of Imogen to cover it on this radio show. Unfortch, I couldn’t find a way to download the track but after the jump you can hear it in full in a You Tube video that has been made available online …

Haunting, beautiful … and even a bit poignant. Hearing it performed by Imogen Heap gives the song new life, I think. I am VERY excited to be seeing Imogen live in concert on November 09 … I wonder if she plans on performing this cover on her new US tour. What do y’all think … isn’t this Thriller cover fantastic?

I dig it!! Totally new take on the song. She’s taken it from fun to haunting and beautiful.

You can use mediaconverter.org to put in the URL of the video and convert it to an mp3!

    Anyway, this is cool!

  3. Jadedkitten says:

Sorry but all listening to this did was make me turn it off mid way and go listen to Micheal’s version.

  4. anna says:

Love Imogen Heap, love the cover. I hate that they ripped off her song “What You Said” for that god-awful Hiphop song.

  5. Sue says:

Love it – and Trent, your girl Tori is great at really interesting covers as well. She’s transformed some amazing rock/pop songs into ballads.

  6. John says:

That’s pretty cool. :3 Wish I could go to Imogen’s concert in LA… have fun, though. ^_^

  7. Furkel says:

Eep! I posted that video, mainly just to be able to show my sister, and now this? Makes me wish I’d at least added some pretty pictures or something.

  8. OnTheGoJo says:

    It’s a totally different song, and I like it, but can’t say it’s a favorite. I will be seeing her Dec 10 in SF… I can’t wait!

  9. Irma says:

@anna, I totally feel you. I hate that song. Just about everyone who listens to it doesn’t even know the original song and it pisses me off. But this cover is legit.

  10. Mike says:

    Wow! I’m totally impressed!

  11. Snorri says:

Imogen is playing in my town the same night as Lady Gaga! IT’S NOT FAIR!!! *kicks ands punches the ground in tears”

  12. CHASE says:

It’s a little bland but she has a good voice. Her face always gets on my nerves.

  13. Ava says:

Very stripped down in such a good way — she packs such emotional into her voice.

  14. Lizzie says:

Very cool cover! If you like Imogen Heap you should check out Mark Minelli. They’re on the same label and he’s equally awesome (IMHO).

  15. Tracy says:

    I adore Imogen Heap. Beautiful.

  16. Lilliah says:

Why does anyone care or get “pissed off” at the idea that some people who like Jason Derulo’s song haven’t heard of her? She said herself that she likes that people can see other songs in her own, and that they (the songs) don’t just end with her. Attempting to act snobby about music that way only displays your own immaturity, kids- it’s so petty.

I’m jalous, Immi is not coming to France at least not for the moment.
You’re so lucky to see her on stage

Her honesty and courage in expressing her admiration for mj really struck me.
