Britney Spears’s New Single ‘3’ Debuts At #1
Our dear Britney scores her third #1 song

Congratulations are in order for Britney Spears today … her new single 3 has debuted in the #1 position on the Billboard magazine Hot 100 Singles Chart giving her her third #1 song of her career. Even more impressive, 3 is the first song to debut at #1 in more than 3 years and is the first NON-American Idol song to debut at #1 in almost 11 years!!!

Britney Spears becomes the first artist in over three years to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, to be released tomorrow (Oct. 15), as “3″ opens at the pinnacle of the chart. Her new track, a racy paean to the joys of three-way sex from the upcoming hits set “The Singles Collection,” due Nov. 24, shifts 255,000 downloads in its first week of release, also propelling it to No. 1 on Digital Songs. The title also jumps 38-25 on the Pop Songs chart and debuts at No. 49 on Radio Songs/Hot 100 Airplay, which ranks songs based on airplay audience on all radio formats. “3″ is the first title to debut at No. 1 since Taylor Hicks’ “American Idol” victory song “Do I Make You Proud” did so on the chart dated July 1, 2006. In fact, the last four songs to open at No. 1 were all “American Idol”-related. Prior to Hicks, Carrie Underwood’s “Inside Your Heaven” (July 2, 2005), “I Believe” by Fantasia (July 10, 2004) and Clay Aiken’s “This Is The Night” each debuted at No. 1. The last non-”Idol” song to open at No. 1 was Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” on Nov. 14, 1998. “3″ is Spears’ third Hot 100 No. 1. Her debut single “…Baby One More Time” spent two weeks at No. 1 in 1999 and “Womanizer” spent a sole frame at the top, exactly one year ago this week, on the chart dated Oct. 25, 2008.

Woooot!!! What amazing news!!! While I’m still pretty stunned to realize that Britney has only ever previously enjoyed 2 #1 songs, the stunning success of 3 more than makes up for it. I knew that the song was doing well but I had no idea it was doing this well. Congratulations of the highest degree are deffo in order for our dear Britney today. In case you are one of the few folks who has yet to hear 3, you can give it a listen after the jump …

Man, this is one of those songs that you fall more in love with every time you hear it … no wonder it debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Congrats again, Britney!!

These days, #1′s are only recorded on the BILLBOARD HOT 100 (sometimes R&B, HipHop and Rap artists are said to be #1 but on the Hip Hop Charts which mis-leads a lot of people. But back in the day, like The Beatles, there was no Hot 100 and it was either Pop Charts or what used to be called the Black Charts and you get #1′s on there.

With that being said, being a Britney fan i do defend her, But Britney WOULD have more than 3 #’1 if it wasn’t for her record company. I’m not criticizing them cause what they did back in the day was total genius. They pretty much released all her songs through airplay and 12″ and hardly ever on CD which was the more popular choice coming into the late 90′s. Sometimes for example was AIRPLAY ONLY i think and that may not have charted really high, it did break the Top 30 (maybe Top 20). So if Britney’s songs were released on CD, no doubt she would have a lot more #’1s than just 3. Where as Xtina was opposite, she had like 3 #’1s off her first record cause fans were able to access the material easier. The reason Britney’s label did it, was to gain more sales for her album which in turn, worked out well and they succeeded.

Oops would have DEF been #1. If Digital Sales were recorded earlier, Toxic would have been. I predict at least, counting ’3′ Britney would have say 6 maybe 7 #1 songs.

ANYWAY… CONGRATS! I really didn’t think she would debut at #1. I was predicting #2 or #2 cause of airplay for ‘Down’ and “Party in the USA’ cause towards end of week, on iTunes that song wasn’t far behind Britneys and Mileys airplay is going bananas. I’m surprised Miley didn’t go number one for that songs, maybe its not meant to be just yet, cause i doubt she will go number one now with declining sales.
