Oh, this is a fun thread! I have to check out Ham on Rye. I haven’t read that yet. @Adam, yeah you kind of get the sense that he’s a chauvinistic a-hole. But at least we got some good books out of him!

I absolutely LOVE Bukowski! Except for Pulp…I hated that one! Post Office was my first Bukowski read, and it really pulled me in. I want so badly to comment on the book in detail, but you haven’t yet read it! Factotum and Women are also good reads. His collection titled Septuagenerian Stew is interesting, too. If you learn a bit about Bukowski, you’ll end up hating the guy though. He was a real jerk!

I just read breakfast of champions. It was ok but disappointing after reading Slaughter House 5 and Cat’s cradle.
The Post Office is a good read, but I highly recommend you read Ham on Rye first. Same main character, but earlier in his life- childhood. I love Bukowski’s no nonsense, gritty style. He’s not afraid to talk dick and farts, but manages to tell a profound story.

@CHASE — TELL ME ABOUT IT! I worked at the Office Max Customer Service desk in OKC doing returns … which is basically the place where you stand there and have people YELL at you all day long until you make them happy. Ugh … it was so not fun. I feel you, my friend, I’ve been there and done that ;(

OMG! Working in a retail office supply is the worst! I work at Staples (part-time, thank God!) and the customers are literally ridiculous! I’ve worked in retail before (this is my second job) but customers in office supply stores are particularly worse. They expect you to go beyond and over for them and I realize that’s a part of my job and all, but they yell at you for no reason. It’s ridiculous.

I really loved Post Office. The prose is really personal and easy to follow, but be ready for some scenes that won’t make you like him very much! That’s why I love Bukowski- he’s proof a writer doesn’t always need a sympathetic narrator! If you fall in love with it, check out his poetry. It’s powerful, too. Hope you like it as much as I did!

I read Cats Cradle and Slaughterhouse Five in one day each so I was super excited to start breakfast of champions only to get about 100 pages in and abandon it I just could not get into it. I’m a HUGE Bukowski fan run with the hunted is one of my faves.

I really liked Post Office! It’s especially great when you’re in a sucky day job. Luckily you don’t have that problem. Can’t wait to hear your take on it.
