Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Well lookie here … new photos of Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, two young ladies who have been spotted in the close company of Twilight’s Taylor Lautner in recent months, have come to light of the BFFs enjoying a girls’ night out together last night. Taylor and Selena first enjoyed an Italian dinner together before grabbing frozen yogurt as dessert:

Clearly Taylena v. 2.0 are not fighting over Taylor Lautner … so mebbe they’re just comparing notes … HMMM. I just have to say, not only do I love that Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner have been hanging out together but I also love that Swift and Gomez are BFFs as well. Ain’t all of this just too damn precious for words?

Kylie Minogue Does Australian ‘In Style’ Magazine

Tweet Tweet
Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Kylie Minogue just tweeted a message on her official Twitter account alerting her followers to the fact that she is featured on the cover of the new issue of Australian In Style magazine … behold:

Altho the Aussie In Style website has yet to be updated with anything concerning Kylie’s appearance in the mag, at least we have something to look forward to. I’m not sure that I love this coverphoto, tho … something about the Photoshopping that makes it look fake and weird. Here’s hoping the photos included inside the mag look a bit better. Kylie looks totally 1992 on this cover … which isn’t necessarily a good thing. What do y’all think?

Madonna Asks That You Join Her Raising Malawi Charity

"I am making a straightforward request."
Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Yesterday we saw photos of Madonna and co. planting a tree and officially breaking ground on the construction of an all girls school in the African country of Malawi (the place where she adopted two of her children). Today, we learn that Madonna has written a blog for The Huffington Post directed at YOU in the hopes that you will join her attempt to enrich Malawi thru her charitable organization Raising Malawi. Here is the full text of Maddy’s blogpost and some screencaps from an accompanying video plea:

This week, my family and I are in Malawi to attend the ground breaking ceremony for Raising Malawi Academy for Girls. I am making a straightforward request. I’m writing to urge you to join me in saving the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable children. And I’m asking you to do it right away. Raising Malawi, the organization I co-founded in 2006, is dedicated to ending the poverty and hardship endured by Malawi’s one million orphans. By donating to Raising Malawi, you can literally transform the future for an entire generation. To encourage your involvement, I’ve pledged $100,000 to match your contributions dollar-for-dollar. Why Malawi? Seven years ago I might have asked myself this very same question. Why not Afghanistan, or India? There are impoverished children, desperate for health care and education, everywhere in the world. Something about Malawi’s children connected with me and their hardships were too much for me to ignore. So I started learning more about Malawi, and, little by little, I began working with Malawians to improve their communities. Visiting Malawi can be a very humbling experience. In the face of such overwhelming challenges, it’s easy to feel helpless. At the same time, it is impossible not to recognize how much we can do to improve the lives of vulnerable children. Right now, I am particularly concerned about Malawian girls whose lives are made even more difficult simply because of their gender. In 2008 Raising Malawi announced the creation of an all-girls boarding school, the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls. Architects have drawn up plans. We’ve identified a plot of land. And some of Malawi’s poorest girls are eager for the opportunities that a comprehensive secondary education will bring them. But we’re still in need of additional funds to complete this project, and there’s no time to lose. My own daughters will each have a solid secondary education. They have a family that assures them that they can be anything they want to be, that they are not limited in any way. I believe that the same should be true for girls in every part of the world, regardless of the circumstances of their birth. The girls of Malawi are bright and resourceful. They are eager to learn and grow. When I look at my girls and see them thriving, it is my greatest wish that the girls in Malawi will have the same chance for happiness. This is where you come in. Please join me in supporting the work of Raising Malawi. Every dollar we collect will make a huge difference in a child’s life. By matching your donation, dollar for dollar, I will personally ensure that your contribution has an even greater impact. That’s a promise. This is my call to you: Give an opportunity to a child who would otherwise have none. Support the work of Raising Malawi. Will you join me? Please visit www.raisingmalawi.org/madonnamatch to contribute and learn more.

As I mentioned above, this blogpost comes complete with a video message from Madonna about her Raising Malawi charity. After the jump, check out that video in full …

Michael Jackson’s What Could’ve Been

The TV Guide
Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Last night a group of friends (Tam, Rob, Brett, Ollie, Caleb) joined David and me at the first public screening of Michael Jackson’s This Is It documentary/concert film. We’ve already heard what Elizabeth Taylor had to say about the film and earlier today we read a glowing review from the press of the film … now I’m going to chime in with my personal feelings on the film:

The overriding thought in my head while I watched all 111 minutes of this film was What Could’ve Been. From the onset, you could see that MJ had planned nothing short of an epic stage production to mark his return to live performance … and thruout the film, you can get a sense of what he had planned. To be honest, I found much of his performance raw and unpolished, not at all surprising considering they were still in rehearsals … my hope was that we would get to see as close to the final product as possible but, alas, that is not what is presented. What we do get is a very interesting inside look into a part of Michael Jackson’s world that we would NEVER have been privy to had he not passed away in June. Considering how much of a perfectionist he was, there is no way AT ALL he would ever have wanted the public to see this footage if he were still alive … but since he is no longer with us and the world was waiting with bated breath for his concert staging we, at least, get as close to the real thing as possible. I am just STUNNED at the prospect of what could’ve been had he been able to bring this concert to life in front of a live audience. The Thriller section, which was meant to be viewed in 3D, just looked EPIC. But … we will never get to see the final product and therein lies the feeling of loss. I’ve read review after review that praised MJ for his “lucidness” in this film and, to be honest, I didn’t really see too much of that. I did see a 50 year old man holding his own as best as he could with a team of much younger performers. I’m utterly convinced that MJ would’ve come ALIVE on the concert stage … no moniker of disappointment would even be visible if this show had been allowed to come to life. But without the glitzy costumes, full production projections and any honest run-thrus of the show numbers (I understand MJ had not yet run thru a single full dress rehearsal before his death) we are left with fragments of … what could’ve been. It’s a shame that he was so adamant about “saving his voice” because I would’ve loved to have heard him sing his heart out … but, again, therein lies more of the loss. The film will be a boon for any MJ fan. Folks who are marginally interested in the man may find entertainment in this film but it’s really not meant to win over new fans … it’s a gift to the legions of fans Michael Jackson left behind.

Tonight, David and I are meeting up with friends again to enjoy a night of horror fun at Universal Studios. I’ve never been to Universal’s Horror Nights so I’m excited … I hope to have fun pics to share tomorrow :)
