Miss Jackson, if you're nasty
La Toya Jackson Hits The Town

Look out, y’all … there is a new diva on the scene 53 years in the making … La Toya Jackson has been making the rounds in the weeks since her younger brother Michael Jackson passed away in June ensuring that the Jackson name (nose and chin) is still fresh in people’s minds. While the Jackson brothers are hard at work behind the scenes (for now) putting together a reality TV series that will, in all likelihood, exploit the death of MJ to the fullest extent, La Toya is just basking in the glow of all of the attention. We saw Toy all dolled up for dinner with her mother Katherine Jackson earlier this week but last night she hit the town all by herself … sharing the spotlight with no one:

While this all may sound like I’m not a La Toya fan, I can assure you that I am. The Jackson men generally gross me out to the max and some of that disdain does seep over onto the other Jacksons but I generally do like La Toya. It’s just a shame that she’s enjoying all of this new found attention because of the sad and untimely death of her brother. But now that the genie is out of the bottle, there’s no putting it back in … I expect La Toya and the rest of the Jacksons will enjoy the attention for as long as it keeps getting heaped on them. I suppose they gotta make a living somehow.

Here comes another one
‘SAW VI’ Premieres In Hollywood

If it’s Hallowe’en, then it’s time for a new SAW movie … this year, we get the sixth SAW movie … whether you like it or not. Here is a photo of the SAW star Tobin Bell from the LA premiere of SAW VI which was held at the Mann Chinese 6 theater in Hollywood, CA last night:

The only other folks in attendance at last night’s screening event were actors who will be slaughtered in the film … you won’t know their names before you see the movie and you won’t know their names after you see the movie. In all honesty, I said that I was pretty much done with the SAW series after I saw part V last year … I really think I’m gonna take a pass on this latest installment. I totally get that they want to run with this franchise for as long as they can but … I’m over it. It was a fun/gross series while it lasted but it lost my interest ages ago. I’m out. How about y’all … are there still SAW fans out there who are excited to see this new installment?

The reviews are in
Sienna Miller Makes Her Broadway Debut

Sienna Miller and her costar Jonny Lee Miller took their bows last night at the Roundabout Theatre Company‘s American Airlines Theatre in NYC, NY after their opening night performance of After Miss Julie last night. Sienna stepped out of the theater lookin’ beautiful … and was met with the first reviews of her performance. Critics thought she looked great in the play … but it was her acting that left something to be desired:

Sienna Miller received a guarded welcome to Broadway Thursday night, as critics measured her performance in the drama After Miss Julie, an update – to 1945 – of August Strindberg’s 1888 play about sex and class. “In a theater season that has felt like a boys’ club of male movie idols from abroad (Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman in A Steady Rain, Jude Law in Hamlet), wouldn’t it be gratifying if one fearless woman – with fewer stage credentials than the guys but almost as much tabloid exposure – walked away with the laurels?” writes Ben Brantley of The New York Times. Adding to the anticipation of what he thought about her acting, he opines: “She has always struck me as a game, gutsy kind of gal, as intrepid in choosing film roles (Factory Girl, Interview) as in courting (and wrestling with) the fame that now accompanies her like an unwanted bodyguard.” But, ultimately, Brantley’s praise is limited to Miller’s “good diction, good posture and great legs. Commendable as these attributes are, they are of limited use in portraying a tautly wound, death-courting neurotic who is eaten alive by her own demons.” Slightly more approving is Michael Kuchwara, who for the Associated Press also notes that Miller “looks sensational: blonde hair done up in a quintessential 1940s ‘do, her trim figure wrapped in a pert floral print dress that shows off her great legs. The very model of a seducer awaiting to commence seduction … And there is a relentless quality to Sienna Miller’s performance, not terribly subtle or vulnerable, but compelling in its obsessiveness.” The infamously testy John Simon, of Bloomberg News, found much to like in her “persuasive performance,” however – finding Miller, 27, “convincing enough in the title role, managing superciliousness and condescension, lust and humiliation, with unassailable proficiency.” Reaction to Miller’s Broadway debut – she costars in the Roundabout Theatre Company production with Jonny Lee Miller, who was once married to Angelina Jolie – qualified as major news in her native England, where the Daily Mail tracked the reviews, as well as the fact that her former fiancé, Law, and even a former boyfriend, Craig, are also on Broadway right now.

You know what … good legs are a good thing to have in showbiz. Now, I’ve not seen the play myself so I can’t speak to its merits or pitfalls but I really loved Sienna in this Summer’s blockbuster action film G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and found her performance in that film completely engaging, wholly interesting and yes, her legs looked amazing. In all seriousness, Sienna wasn’t savaged by the NY theater critics and I would take that as a win. I think congratulations are in order … after all, the reviews could’ve been a helluva lot worse.

And so ... it begins
‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’ Screens In Rome

The first of many premieres for the much-anticipated sequel film The Twilight Saga: New Moon took place in Rome, Italy yesterday as part of the 4th Rome International Film Festival. Unfortch for the folks at yesterday’s premiere screening, the event was very lacking in Twilight stars … none of the main castmembers were in attendance … all they got was Cameron Bright, Jamie Campbell Bower (two lowly members of the Volturi) and a host of nobodies dressed in corny-lookin’ Renaissance Fair costumes:

With nary a Cullen or werewolf character in attendance, it wasn’t much of a Twilight event … but it was the first premiere for the film and there will be many, many more to come … in various countries … with various castmembers in attendance. We’re just about a month away from the film’s release and the promo push for the movie is now officially underway. Let the Twilight onslaught commence!

‘Melrose Place’ Releases A New Promo Vid For Heather Locklear’s Return

Now that we’ve primarily digested the news that Melrose Place is axing two of its main characters (no matter how painful that news may be), I think it’s time to look forward and celebrate who’s at long last coming back on board to the show. A new promo video, brought to my attention by Pink reader Collin, popped up on Facebook today formally announcing Heather Locklear‘s return to Melrose:

It’s short, sweet and to the point. After the jump, check out one more screencap and watch this new promo video in full for yourselves …

The TV Guide
The Audacity Of Hope

Early yesterday afternoon David’s sisters Lara and Eden rolled into town from their road trip from San Francisco, CA (where they ran the SF Marathon last Sunday and chilled with their brother Aram) and quickly settled in. We all managed to enjoy a lovely dinner last night to welcome them to town:

After dinner I met up with my friend Josh so that we could make our way downtown to the Mayan Theater to see Hope Sandoval (formerly of Mazzy Star) live in concert:

It turns out that Hope is NOTORIOUSLY camera shy so there was a strict No Pictures policy in effect last night. I did manage to get some atmosphere shots of the venue tho … The Mayan Theater is beautiful … altho, it does make you feel like you’re inside The Temple of Doom:

As for Hope Sandoval‘s performance … ye gods, it was beautiful. Her vocals are just spellbinding … and she makes it all sound so effortless. She just opens her mouth and you can’t help but get caught up in the emotion and splendor that comes tumbling out. She truly has the voice of an angel … and it sounds as beautiful today as it did all those years ago when she was in Mazzy Star. Some drunk fool yelled out for a Mazzy song and she just shook her head and carried on … she made sure that there was no spotlight on her at all so that even if you did manage to sneak a camera inside you couldn’t get a picture. Shyness aside, it was a fantastic concert … she performed selections from her solo albums Bavarian Fruit Bread and her latest release Through The Devil Softly. Her band The Warm Inventions were really great but it was all about Hope‘s voice … just stunning. If you have the chance to see her live I urge you to do so … it’s an experience you won’t soon forget.

Fun stuff planned for today … David and I are taking his sisters to Disneyland to enjoy the Hallowe’en Time fun there today! We’re meeting up with some friends so it’s gonna be a blast. I plan on taking a bunch of fun photos to share. It’s gonna be 90+ degrees today … the perfect way to celebrate Hallowe’en at Disneyland :)

The White House Releases Official First Family Photo

The White House is releasing today the first official photo of the First Family which was shot last month by famed celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz (who has been struggling with HUGE debt problems lately). Here is our first look at the official White House photo of the First Family — President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and their daughters Malia Ann and Natasha (Sasha) Obama:

The Obamas have released a new official first family portrait this morning. As you can see at left, Barack and Michelle Obama are seated in the Green Room of the White House, along with their daughters Sasha, age 8, and Malia, age 11. The portrait was taken last month by famed photographer Annie Leibowitz, who has taken a number of Obama family portraits in the past.

Such a beautiful family, such a beautiful portrait. If you would like to have a high-res copy of this photo suitable for framing or what have you, you can download the file HERE at the official White House Flickr photostream. Great photo!!

'Peace and Love' is due out in February
Juliana Hatfield Announces The Release Of Her Next Album

Great news to pass along for fans of Juliana Hatfield … the prolific singer-songwriter has announced that she will be releasing a new album in February which she has titled Peace and Love. Now, I’ve been a huge fan of Juliana‘s for many, many years so this is very exciting news for me … I’m sure it is exciting news for some of y’all as well. Here is the full text of her new album press release announcement:

Peace And Love, Juliana Hatfield’s latest album, will be released on February 16, 2010 on Ye Olde Records. Hatfield, of course, has a long history of DIY endeavors – from her trailblazing days with Boston indie band the Blake Babies to her recent releases on Ye Olde Records, the label she founded in 2005 – but with Peace And Love she reaches a new level of independence. She produced and engineered the album herself and played all the instruments, including acoustic and electric guitars, piano, harmonica and drum machine. “I’ve produced records before but I was always in a studio with professional engineers. So it was definitely a learning process for me,” says Hatfield, who was ready to strip things down after her critically acclaimed 2008 album, How To Walk Away, which was a full studio production. “I always like to try things I’ve never done before and I’d been yearning to record myself.” Hatfield had just purchased her brother’s eight-track digital recorder and moved into a Cambridge apartment with a back room that had excellent natural acoustics, so the time was right. “I was able to follow every instinct without worrying that anyone was going to think it was a kooky idea,” she recalls. “I just wanted to do something simple.” The result is an incredibly intimate collection of songs, expertly capturing the loneliness and collateral damage borne of broken relationships yet adamantly refusing to remain broken. In the liner notes, Boston Phoenix music editor James Parker gives it a name: “Survivor-music – because even at their most palpitatingly fragile, your songs have always been built to last. Well-made, strong-boned, fit to be played on streetcorners and station platforms.” Just as Hatfield stripped down the recording process, the characters that populate Peace And Love are ready to shed their convoluted lives. The lilting “Why Can’t We Love Each Other” answers its own question by acknowledging that love is a choice: “we can make our lives a song/will it be a blues or a hymn/a dirge or a psalm/it could be so simple.” But there’s the rub, of course: it could be so simple…if it weren’t for our propensity to muck things up. From the plucked Elizabethan chords that introduce the opening “Peace And Love” and the feedback-drenched “What Is Wrong” to “Unsung,” Hatfield’s first-ever instrumental, and the closing “Dear Anonymous,” written from the point of view of a victim who finds empathy for her stalker, the collection is both compelling and surprising. “Faith In Our Friends” celebrates those who “think you’re just right the way you are” while Hatfield gains fresh perspective on her complex relationship with longtime friend Evan Dando on the exquisite, ethereal “Evan.” Peace And Love is Hatfield’s 11th solo album and follows last year’s How To Walk Away, which was hailed as “rueful and gorgeous,” by Entertainment Weekly, which gave the album an A-. “After 20 years, the songstress still packs a wallop on her 10th album, featuring edgy tales of heartbreak sung with that classic sweetness,” said Newsweek, naming it a “Checklist” pick of the week upon its release while Spin pronounced it “vital,” awarding it three out of four stars. Her autobiography, entitled When I Grow Up, was published by Wiley & Sons in September 2008.

I just love Juliana Hatfield … the woman writes and records so much music that she offers up the songs that don’t make it on her albums on her official website for downloaders to pay whatever they feel is fair. In the past couple of years she has made at least 4 albums worth of material available to fans in this way. I cannot wait to hear what this new batch of songs sounds like. After the jump, check out the tracklist for Peace and Love

At last, 'The Wait Is Ova'?
Is Rihanna Ready To Release A 2nd Single Already?

Mere days after Rihanna released the first single, Russian Roulette, from her new album, Rated R, it is being reported that Ri Ri is already planning the release of her second single, The Wait Is Ova. As you may recall, we saw video of Rihanna filming a music video in NYC last week and the line The Wait Is Ova could clearly be heard in the video. It sounds like she was shooting the video for her second single which is now rumored to be released a few weeks before her album hits stores on November 23. Here is a new promo pic of Rihanna along with the deets of this second single report:

According to one of the RihannaDaily.com sources and adressa.no, “The Wait Is Ova” is the second single of Rihanna’s upcoming album: Rated R. Mikkel Storleer Eriksen and Stargate produced the song, and he can report good news from Rihanna’s record label. “We were just told that they go for ‘The Wait Is Ova’ as next single and that it will launch in a few weeks before the album release. It means a lot to us to be a part of a single-release in this format,” said an elated Mikkel Eriksen to Adressa.no. Mikkel says he is very pleased that Rihanna chose just “Russian Roulette” as the first single. “Yes. We love the song. It was written by Ne-Yo, and we hope it can help pull up our song too,” said Mikkel. “Our song is pretty atypical Rihanna and has a much harder sound than ‘Russian Roulette’.”

Now, it should be noted that RihannaDaily is a fan site but the information they provide fits in with what we’ve been seeing/hearing ourselves. Beyoncé is very fond of releasing two singles at a time so it makes sense that Rihanna would want to follow suit … a slower jam and a more upbeat track. We should know shortly if this report of a second single is true or not … my gut tells me that it is. The wait may finally be ova, indeed.
