Whitney Houston Brings Bobbi Kristina To The ‘GMA’ Stage
"I never left, I never left."

Yesterday we saw photos from Whitney Houston‘s “comeback” concert performance in Central Park, NYC which was taped live yesterday for airing on Good Morning America today. Taking a page from Madonna‘s playbook that says it’s cool to bring one’s daughter on stage during live performances, Whitney brought her daughter Bobbi Kristina onto the GMA stage with her to the delight of all her fans … behold:

It took nearly a decade, but Whitney Houston made her comeback to television in a four-song concert in Central Park broadcast on Good Morning America on Wednesday. “I’m overwhelmed,” Houston said after performing her opening number, “Million Dollar Bill,” written especially for her by Alicia Keys. “I love you all saying hello to me. I never left, I never left.” Wearing tight black pants and a tan trenchcoat over a grey blouse, the 46-year-old wowed a crowd of 5,000 who had waited hours to see the singer make her long-awaited return. She hadn’t been on television in seven years, and hadn’t made a major live appearance since 2004. “You never left,” GMA host Robin Roberts said during a break in the concert, which was prerecorded on Tuesday. “You can see the love here.” But Houston said it was the love she felt that brought her back – and that guaranteed that observers worried about her onetime drug use and personal problems need not have worried. “I was worried for you,” Diane Sawyer said. “Well, don’t be worried anymore,” Houston responded. Asked by Sawyer what brought her back to the stage after such a long absence, she answered, “My faith, the love and support of my fans, which I do have. That’s basically what it is.” Family was close in more than words – Houston serenaded her mother, gospel singer Cissy Houston, during “I Look to You,” the title track to her new album. During “My Love Is Your Love,” she proudly brought her 16-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina onstage to join her in singing. But the emotions – and interviews – that accompanied her comeback evidently fatigued the former concert-circuit stalwart. After four songs, Houston apologized to the audience and signed off. “I’m so sorry. I did Oprah. I’ve been talking for so long. … I talked so much, my voice,” she said. “I shouldn’t be talking. I should be singing.”

I watched Whitney‘s performances on GMA this morning and I have to say, I thought Diane Sawyer was really rude to say “I was worried for you” to Whitney‘s face. Yes, we were all worried but I don’t think it was the right time/place to bring up the matter … especially when Whitney is trying to make people forget about those dark days and focus on her comeback. After the jump, check out video of Whitney performing the first single from her new album Million Dollar Bill and see for yourself if Whitney is back on track …

As much as I love Whitney Houston and I am rooting for her successful comeback, I have to be honest and say that this was not her strongest or best performance. Vocal strain or not, she didn’t really seem into the performance. I’m very willing to cut her some slack … she’s been away for a long time and, let’s be honest, she may never sound as good as she used to … but she is such a major talent, I have every confidence that she will get back on top. Welcome back, Whitney.

hells bells! she had to stop after four songs because her voice gave out? dang. i can do at l.e.a.s.t 6 songs on guitar hero before i have to stop.

  2. Mr. Gyllenhaal says:

Her daughter is looking so cute!!!

  3. Jay says:

Definitely weak on all four songs. She relied on back-up singers and audience. I am one of the biggest supporters of her comeback and I do not think that was rude at all to say. We WERE all worried and now we celebrate. It’s just a shame her voice is not what it used to be. But, she looks great and she obviously still has the support of her fans. Go Whitney!

  4. Keylee says:

You can’t sing like that for years and years without it taking some tole on your voice. Yes, she’s been away for awhile, but even so, she was singing longer that she wasn’t. How many people have had to have surgery on their vocal cords for all the strain? I think Justin Timberlake did. Celine said on Oprah that she doesn’t speak for hours before she goes on. She’s almost 50, and if she was on drugs, that also takes it tole. So even though this wasn’t her “best performance” she still sounds great, and better than most of the chicks out there now. We’ll see if Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson are still singing this way in 30 years.

  5. Jay says:

She didn’t have to stop after 4. She was only supposed to do 2 songs and decided to do 4.

  6. jo says:

Agreed Keylee, even Mariah sounds pretty awful live these days.

  7. HSKLLZ says:

Yeah, she doesn’t sound 100% but I liked it anyway. She looked excited.

  8. Ashley says:

She was beaming out there. I felt so bad for her during one song, because she looked pretty emotional, but I’m proud of her.

She’s had an amazing career, and I think she’s gonna continue to have an amazing career. People don’t always sound the same when they’re older. Voices change.

What somebody else said about Celine Dion is true. She rests her voice before she goes out. I believe she spoke about it on her concert DVD.

Whitney was on Oprah for goodness sakes, and we know how that’s all about the talking. I’m sure she was hoarse. I get hoarse if I’ve been talking for too long a period of time, and I’m by no means a singer.

Let her be…she’s still a legend and an icon, and what’s most important is that she’s happy and healthy. She looks great, and I think that in due time, she’ll sound even greater.

She sounds awesome on the CD. :)

Diane Sawyer is always rude….just look at the Britney or MJ interview she did.

  10. GetRight says:

Whitney’s voice will have good and bad days, but her spirit was there and she seemed coherent and sharp for the first time in a long time. It was really touching to watch her sing to her mom… that was very emotional and beautiful.

I’m rooting for Whitney all the way, and so is the world… she has the #1 album on iTunes!

  11. Chivonne says:

Her daughter looks amazing. I have to say I was truly worried for the girl. The pictures and videos I’d see of her back in the day were very hard to look at because she just seemed so sad and……… I don’t know. But she looks happy and amazing. As for Whitney, she made some bad choices and her voice sucks a bit. I hope she can bounce back further than where she is now.

  12. Naomi Black says:

My friend Steven was there at the performance with Whitney & her family! If you watch the performance of I Look to You h’s sitting right next to her mother! He’s a cake artist who made her cake in honor of the release of her album. The cake was designed with her album cover picture on a million dollar bill!

  13. Bren says:

Oh thankthelord, Bobbi Kris has gotten cute. That poor child went through a really fugly stage…yep, looking like daddy. I am seeing Whitney in her finally!! Whew!

  14. Jess says:

I have to say that I love Whitney….all her songs have helped me get through some tough times and have also been the background for some very amazing girl nights! If her voice is scratchy it may be that she has just been practicing a lot for the show!! She looks amazing and I’m glad she is back. I hope to see her in some great movies soon like “The Body Guard” and the “Preachers Wife”. 80′s nights in the clubs are not complete without a little “I wanna dance with somebody”! Love her and I hope she has a clean and wonderful life ahead of her…I knew she would come back just like Britt Britt

  15. Jess says:

I can’t wait for her to sing “Run to you” and “Exhale”…can you tell that I love her!!

  16. Cinner says:

She looks really, really great. It’s sad that her voice isn’t there anymore. Mariah’s isn’t either though. Whit sounds an awful lot like her cousin Deionne Warwick, never been a fan of her voice or singing style.

  17. meg says:

ugh, why would diane sawyer say that? talk about inappropriate!
