Victoria Beckham Shows Collection At New York Fashion Week Spring 2010

Dress-ed to impress
September 14th, 2009

Victoria Beckham showed off the Spring 2010 collection of her dress line at New York Fashion Week this weekend and, as I understand it, the collection was a huge success. Showcasing bold colors and adventurous fabrics and prints, VB seems to be confidently moving her design aesthetic into the true realm of high fashion. Here are photos of VB at the Fashion’s Night Out event at Bergdorf Goodman over the weekend and some deets about her latest collection:

Already a favourite with the likes of Elle Macpherson and Dannii Minogue, Victoria Beckham has won universal praise from the fashion community since launching her label two seasons ago. So expectations were high for the launch of her latest collection at New York Fashion Week yesterday in a hip downtown art gallery. The fledgling designer didn’t disappoint, her latest offering braver and more confident than previous seasons. ‘This is my third collection, and I wanted to push myself, but I also wanted to be respectful of my customer,’ she said. ‘I want her to know she can rely on me.’ Featuring bolder colours, sombre-style prints and a more adventurous spectrum of fabrics and cuts, she seemed to have flexed her fashion muscles to fantastic effect. Presenting her spring/summer 2010 collection, Beckham had refashioned her signature fitted dress in a sunny yellow hue. This season’s popular peplum style was pared down in taupe with a geometric cut-out neckline, while another creation – worn by the designer herself for the occasion – played with the proportions of the overskirt, teaming it with a high hemline. A loose silky shift dress in a black, yellow and white print saw her step out of her tailored comfort zone, while formal eveningwear also featured for the first time in the shape of a stunning red silk goddess gown with a cut-out back and black trim.

After the jump, check out a few of VB’s Spring ‘10 designs to see what all the fuss is about …

The press was, once again, unanimous in its adulation for the one-time Spice Girl. ‘So accomplished was the cut; so deftly chosen was the fabric and so masterful the execution that it was hard to believe this was the work of a novice,’ said Evening Standard fashion editor Laura Craik. Beckham personally gave a running commentary of the designs as it was presented to a small group of buyers and journalists. Of the evening gown, she said: ‘It will clash with the red carpet,’ though, one can safely assume, this is unlikely to put off celebrity fans. While the collection is clearly cut to flatter – dresses feature in-built corsets and exaggerated shoulders that, Beckham says, ‘make the waist look smaller’ – you still need hips the circumference of a Twiglet to pull off these designs. So despite proving herself as a talented designer, the 35-year-old’s line is only likely to hold much genuine appeal for the very thin – and with prices reaching at a cool £3,900 – the very rich. ‘I try on everything,’ she said. ‘I make the dresses for me.’ That is unlikely to stall sales though. This season’s collection sold out at net-a-porter.com on pre-orders alone. Beckham is nonetheless humbled by her success. ‘I know I used to be in a pop group and I’m married to a footballer – a very lovely footballer,’ she said. ‘But I’m grateful that people are prepared to leave their preconceptions at the door and let the dresses speak for themselves. The sell-through has been amazing.’

To be honest, I do like the look of this collection over the drab, plainness of her previous dress collections. These colors are very striking and the cuts and designs are inventive … moreso that her previous attempts at design. While I’m not 100% convinced that Vicki B. is the one doing all of the actual designing for her line, I can appreciate that she is finally authorizing the creation of more fashion forward-looking dresses. What do y’all think?

hmm I actually really like the dress she was wearing(yeah..I have a weird taste in fashion XD) But I think the only other dress I like is the red one. The others look kind of..I dunno. Just not my taste. She makes very unique designs :)

I actually like it as well – it’s wearable, which is what I tend to look for in these fasion shows more than anything. Good for her! PS – I could never picture her in that flowy number haha, we all know girlfriend does not leave the house in anything more than 1 cm from her body.

    Hey Trent,
Did you hear that Jim Carroll died? So sad — I remember seeing him at the Magic Stick about eight years ago. Great VMA coverage by the way!

  4. Jackie Says:

The red, yellow, and grey are amazing (though a little steeply-priced).. not so much of a fan of the one she’s wearing or that loose-fitting one. They are all very VB, though.. weird seeing those dresses on a model that isn’t her!

  5. Ashley Says:

I would so wear all of these. Love, love, LOVE her!

  6. Mrs. Nott Says:

Didn’t Angelina Jolie wear a dress that is similar to the yellow one to an awards show with Brad Pitt. Her dress was black with green accents around the folds. Look it up!

  7. Ally Says:

Mrs. Nott — I know the dress you are thinking of. It was actually black with yellow folds. VB’s is different enough that it doesn’t seem like a ripoff to me and this one is much more of a day look.

I don’t know how much VB actually designs of these collections or if she is pretty much just giving her seal of approval, but they are very nice and I’m sure will be worn a lot.

  8. Mrs. Nott Says:

@Ally, you’re right with the yellow. I knew it was a citrus color! :-) VB’s dress is diff, but alike at the same time. Designers “copy” each others ideas, so power to her for seeing that dress and making it her own. I like it more in the one color, so yay VB!

    she looks horrific here
