Trent Reznor – The Wave Goodbye Interview
On Thursday evening, I had the great fortune to attend the final Nine Inch Nails live performance at The Wiltern Theater here in Los Angeles, CA. But before Trent Reznor took the stage to perform the last NIN concert, he graciously set aside some time to sit down and grant me a short interview for Pink is the new Blog:
As you may recall, I was able to interview Reznor on the last night of the Lights in the Sky Tour last December in Las Vegas, NV so I was thrilled he was willing to chat with me again on the last night of the Wave Goodbye Tour, the last for Nine Inch Nails. In our 20 minute chat, TR explained how he goes about crafting a setlist for each performance, which live performance in his 20 year touring history stands out most in his mind, his plans for new music outside of Nine Inch Nails and more. Altho I was very nervous to talk to TR again on film, he made sure to set me at ease so that we could have an engaging and comfortable conversation. I’m always taken with how candid he is in interviews and cannot express enough how much I appreciate him taking the time to talk with me. His answer about his plans for new music left me hopeful and excited, which is much different than many NIN fans feel about the end of the band. I hope this interview will leave those of you who watch it just as hopeful and excited. Below is an audio version of our interview in case you’d rather hear it instead:
Many thanks to Trent Reznor and all of his support staff who helped make this interview possible. I should mention that the videographer who oversaw the official filming at all the NIN shows also filmed my interview with TR for possible usage … tho his camera was focused on me the entire time so I doubt it’ll be useful at all. Finally sat down and watched whole interview…This is one of the best, cushy interviews I’ve ever seen done with Trent…and I think Ive seen all of them…I could listen to you two talk all day. So many enlightened questions that provoked many illuminating answers. Laughed out loud several times…esp. about “throwing the mike at the monitor guys head”. He looked so comfortable and loose. Great job! Start working on the next interview to keep us updated! I’ll let you see my pink bat if you do!

your interview skills have improved from the last TR interview, where it seemed you were more nervous. You held it together much better. Great Job.
I’m excited too, for what ever he does next (musically I mean, I’m not concerned about his private life even though I wish him happiness). Another Ghosts etc, can’t wait. And really I prefer TR being more productive (not touring as NIN), it just means I get to listen to more of his music. I’m totally happy for you to be ablr to do the interview and see that last shows, especially the downward spiral set and the epic 39 song last gig, wow! Now go get married, eat rainbows and shit butterflies, just make some music! LOL

Thank you for doing this last interview with TR, very good stuff. I’m glad to hear that his main focus now IS going to be new music. I was a little scared that he was going to fade away into the sunset like some artists that stop touring. Just an all around feel good Interview for the fans, thank you. Plus, You got him to talk about me (Thank you! haha) at the May 29th Chicago show. I’m the one that “smashed” the guitar on stage with him.

Trent is such a seasoned interviewee. Glad he was able to carry you though the interview…quite unprofessional to have someone scrolling though with the PALM, and having the door to the room wide open…the sound quality was horrible. Can’t really blame you for the sirens and such though. Just a suggestion, when you have someone responding to your questions, perhaps engage them..not stare at your questions, and not acknowledging their response. The ‘yeah, right…ahuh”, after he took the time to answer your questions was kinda rude. Looks like you are just trying to get through the questions, and not giving much care to what the answers are. Granted you are nervous, but it really came off “stand-off-ish”. Great questions, and thanks for posting it.

It’s so weird to be able to see you and hear you Trent, i love it though! :) You’re like a real person now haha instead of just being some imaginary supper cool blogger guy. This is not the END of nine inch nails…. Trent has said in other interviews that he will continue to make NIN MUSIC aside from his other ventures, he’s just done touring…. VERY good interview by the way.

…….but I do suspect NIN WILL tour again….someday….don’t forget, there was a 5 year gap between “The Downward Spiral” and “The Fragile”, and a 6 year gap between “The Fragile” and “With Teeth”….. NIN will tour again :-D

Hi Trent. You did a fantastic job interviewing TR! You definitely seemed much more comfortable this time around. :)
Also, it brought a HUGE smile to my face when you pulled out your piano key. At the PIne Knob show in May, you were telling me how you didn’t want to have him sign it because you didn’t want to seem like such an uber fan. So, I’m dying to know…did you have him sign it after this interview?!?!?

Sad to see Nine Inch Nails go, but at the same time Trent Reznor is NIN and he’s gonna be around, hopefully making the most of his well earned free-time, with more projects to look forward to in the distant future.

I can’t believe that the last night of touring with Nine Inch Nails you were granted an interview, in which you had to read heartfelt words to wish Trent well from your freakin cell phone…..!!!!!
