‘The Karate Kid’ Remake Begins Filming
Flip the script

Welp, it looks like another beloved movie from the 1980′s has been pilfered and repackaged for rerelease to a new generation of viewers … The Karate Kid remake film has begun production and will feature Jackie Chan in the “Mr. Miyagi” role and Jaden Pinkett-Smitt (son of Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith) will take on the Daniel LaRusso role. In this remake, the young karate student movies to Beijing, China and he studies under his sensei in order to learn how to protect himself from bullies … not exactly the storyline of the original film but it will have the same Karate Kid name. Here are a few photos of Chan and the young Pinkett-Smith filming scenes for the remake:

The first pictures from the set of “Kung Fu Kid”, a loose remake to 1984 hit “The Karate Kid”, have surfaced. Put out by Spoiler TV, the set photos center their attention to two of its major characters, Jaden Smith’s Dre and his Kung Fu mentor, Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han. The series of images capture the two shooting for training sequence on a misty dock. In this updated version of “Karate Kid”, Jaden takes the role of a boy who moves to Beijing with his mother. There, he’ll encounter a bully situation similar to what Daniel LaRusso, the main character in “Karate Kid” faced. Learning how to stand up for himself, the teenager gets a helping hand from an eccentric mentor. “Kung Fu Kid” is in production under the direction of helmer Harald Zwart. Screenwriter Steven Conrad has been hired to work on Chris Murphy’s script. “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” star Taraji P. Henson stars as Dre’s mother. Produced by Jaden’s father, Will Smith, this drama film is scheduled to be released in U.S. on June 11, 2010.

While I suppose it’s commendable that the remake has been changed a bit from the original, I can’t help but feel that there are just too damn many remakes coming out these days. It’s as if every original idea has been exhausted and there is nowhere left to look for new films than to films that have already been made. I LOVE the original Karate Kid … even tho it’s hella cheesy to watch now … there is something about the original that seems almost holy. I can’t believe that this remake will surpass the original. It’s a cute idea but I don’t know that I’m at all interested in seeing the final product. What do y’all think … will you pay up to see this Karate Kid remake?

    …… this looks terrible…………..

  2. Sarah says:

lt looks like a “Disney original movie” lol….

  3. EM says:

Sorry, I don’t think Jaden Smith is that great.

  4. Mrs. Clarkson says:

HELLZ NO! I like Will and Jaden’s a cute kid who did a great job on The Pursuit of Happyness, but definitely not. Trent, I’m with you…enough with the remakes! Seriously.

  5. joelle says:

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You cant remake the Karate Kid! You can NEVER replace Mr Miyagi. You know why they are doing this…not to sound racist cuz I’m definitely NOT….see where I am coming from…

  6. Taylor says:

It’s not my thing- since I consider the orginial a cherished part of my childhood- but maybe the pre-tweens will like it.

What troubles me is how Will and Jada may think it’s a good idea to produce movies just for their young child to star in. Perhaps being the child of celebrities already ruins his ability to be a ‘normal’ kid. Even so, I wonder what kind of adult he’ll grow to be if his rich and famous parents hand him movies to star in like it’s a normal thing for parents to give their kids.

Maybe Jaden is an exceptional kid who can handle it. Who knows?

  7. Uh oh, I have a bad feeling about this. My boyfriend’s dad will love this, though. He’s a big Jackie Chan fan.

Um REJECTED. Hell to the nah. there is no way that child can be the karate kid. I’m sorry, but just, NO. So many things wrong with it! No offense meant but it just doesn’t work like that. You do a re-make you have to keep the main karakters match similarly. This is like Nickelodeon casting all white people for their avatar: the last airbender movie! It just does not compute. sorry.

  9. CHASE says:

    CORN ROWS… EW!

  10. vintage says:

Jackie Chan?!! What? I mean, he’s a nice guy and talented and all, but I don’t think he’s suitable to be in the Karate Kid. I dunno, I’m not for the cast…

  11. Joanne says:

The original Mr Miyagi had a quiet dignity about him … I see JC as more of a comedian now.

  12. Georjie says:

Damn, is there no originality in Hollywood anymore?

Every cartoon/movie from my childhood gets ruined by all these remakes…

  13. Melissa says:

Oh yeah. another stupid remake of a movie that should not be remade. Excuse me while I gag.
I guess hollywood is ceasing to be original and just likes to rip off it’s own movies except that they always suck.
This movie looks absolutely stupid and I don’t care if it’s will smiths son in it. I refuse to pay to watch another piece of crap remake. Especially with movies costing what they do.
I’d rather just buy the original instead.

  14. joe says:

I’m glad its not an exact remake and that their just taking the idea behind Karate Kid and running with it. Makes me happier knowing their not trying to remake the original. The original is solid. You can’t mess with perfection. My husband and I dressed up as Mr.Miyagi and Daniel for Halloween last year! I was Mr.Miyagi! :)

  15. CB says:

Worst. Idea. Ever. No way can JC hold a candle to Pat Morita. I feel horrible for little Jaden who will have this movie on his acting credits forevermore.

  16. cole says:

All the old 80′s movies are being ruined by re-makes. Karate Kid should never have been remade, this movie looks horrid. Next thing you know, they’ll re-make the breakfast club.

  17. toya says:

@cole OH GAWD!! DON’T GIVE THEM ANY IDEAS!!!
