Last night the 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards were handed out in a lavish ceremony at the Nokia Theater at LA Live in downtown Los Angeles, CA which was broadcast on CBS. As I mentioned earlier, Neil Patrick Harris KILLED as Emmy host last night but the awards show was more than just about him (as hard to believe as that may be). Here are a few pictures from the red carpet arrivals at the 2009 Emmy Awards last night:

While there were a lot of pretty people on the red carpet (Alyson Hannigan looked amazing, as did Drew Barrymore) the real focus of the night was on who won what for which TV show. After the jump, check out some photos from the Emmy telecast itself, see some photos of the Emmy winners in the press room and find out who took home those coveted trophies at last night’s Emmy Awards …

After starting with 16 nominations, “Mad Men” won just three Emmy Awards at the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night — but one of them was the big one, best drama series. The AMC show about ad agency executives in early 1960s Manhattan often competed against itself, particularly in the category of episode writing, where it had four of the five possible nominations. “Mad Men” also won best drama last year. “30 Rock” won best comedy at Sunday’s awards. The show won five Emmys overall. “We want to thank our friends at NBC … for keeping us on the air, even though we are so much more expensive than a talk show,” said star Tina Fey in accepting the honor. Glenn Close won best actress in a drama for her performance in “Damages,” but she turned her speech into praise for her colleagues. “I want to salute what I call my ‘category sisters,’ ” she said. “I respect you, and I’m inspired by your talent.” She also paid tribute to the show’s writers. Bryan Cranston of AMC’s “Breaking Bad” won his second straight Emmy as best actor in a drama. “I don’t know what I’m doing up here,” he said. “I feel like Cinderfella. … I stand here a humbled man.” Alec Baldwin won best actor in a comedy series for his performance in “30 Rock.” Toni Collette (“The United States of Tara”) won best actress in a comedy. Collette’s win was a mild surprise, as Tina Fey, of “30 Rock,” was considered a heavy favorite.
The thing that stuck me the most about the show was how much camaraderie was being tossed about … from everyone to everyone else. Heaps of praise was laid upon Neil Patrick Harris‘s performance as Emmy host and the winners kept congratulating others … it was really nice to see. Here are a few photos of some of the winners hoisting up their Emmy trophies in the press room last night:

Much congrats goes out to all the winners … even if I don’t watch all of the shows that win, it’s clear that they are much beloved by viewers and Emmy voters and they are really deserving of their accolades. Click HERE for a list of last night’s 2009 Emmy Award winners.

I for one was so excited to Kristen Chenoweth win! Even though Pushing Daisies was canceled, she was great in it!
Congrats to Michael Emerson for a very deserved win! He is amazing as Ben.
I loved Hayden Panettiere’s dress! too bad you didn’t post it in your article Trent!
What did Justin Timberlake recieve an Emmy for? His work on SNL?
As soon as I say Alyson Hannigan, I thought that you, Trent, would DIE when you saw her..I thought she looked so gorgeous and sexy..I think it was that tossled hair..I thought Kristen Chenoweth looked fab and was so glad she won! I wish Dexter had taken something home and thought Jon Cryer’s win was a total joke..I know that Monk is in its last season so it would have been nice for Tony Shaloub (sp?) to win, but whatever..And one of my favorite cartoons, Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends, won! I was so happy!
*saw
HOLY SHIT! Justin Timberlake looks fucking creepy as fuck! Wow…
@Heather Yes, Justin won for guest performance on SNL
Is it just me or are the same people winning over and over (ex. 30 rock, Mad Men etc) getting a little boring? The only exciting one was Kristin (who is fabulous). Neil Patrick Harris deserved to win for HIMYM. These things are far too political now
Justin looks cracked out! LOL. I was so bummed that Big Love didnt win best drama series. But the Emmys are sooo predictable. Wow what a surprise 30 rock again…
It may be boring when the same shows win, but they’re SO deserving! As far as the actors, go..Meh..I usually don’t agree anyways..
I thought the Emmy’s were good but unforch I didn’t think NPH “killed” it. I thought he was just ok….lots of umcomfy silent spots..better than last year for sure.
dayum! heidi is huge!
I think Mad Men is the best show that has been on TV, and that the cast is just HUGELY talented. There are so many amazing actresses: Elizabeth, January, Christine…the list just goes on and on. Every moment of that show has so many levels. They really did deserve to win again. If award shows start catering to what is “popular” instead of what is “exceptional”, then they become irrelevant. Take the Grammys for example. Who hasn’t won one?
I ALMOST CRY!! HUGH LAURIE SHOULD HAVE WON!!!!!!!! I LOVE HOUSE !!!!!!!
Jennifer Carpenter of Dexter was a hot tranny mess in that dress! omg. They showed her trying to walk in it and it was laughable.
I don’t think I am bitter that she married my love, Michael C. Hall….hehehe
i kinda hate that true blood isn’t accepted into the drama category. i think they have some great actors that deserve to be recognized
wow! justin looks like hell!!!!!!!
trent, i’m a bit upset you didn’t post either a red carpet, accepting the award or posing with the award picture of Toni Collete. She won, one of the biggest awards last night and beat some BIG competition. Especially Tina Fey, which i’m glad she did lose.

30 Rock is a good show, nothing spectacular IMO and Tina Fey did deserve it last year. (However i tend to think she plays a lot of the same roles in sketches or films or her TV show). But Toni Collete is AMAZING in United States of Tara. SO FUNNY! Its Hilarious. She really deserved it. Proud Aussie right there! Go her. And from what i am aware of, majority of critics THOUGHT Toni should win (which she did yay!) but thought Tina would win because of 30 Rock and her fame since the Palin impersonation.

About True Blood, i LOVE the show. I thought it was a BIG snob to it. I believe they delibrately snobbed it because of the populairty it was receiving and because of how Vampires has all of a sudden received such a big interest in film/tv. At least acting noms for them. I think Anna Paquain is great but i thought Tara (aka. Rutina Wesley) is amazing in her performances. I also think Nelson Ellis as Lafayette is damn right funny and plays his part great too.

Ahh well hopefully next year. Just glad Toni won and beat Tina Fey. GO TONI!
